This is by far one of the best videos I have found so far on my curl journey!! I’ve been struggling so much with my curls lengthening too much and I have fine hair. I never knew anything about protein or how to tell if my hair needed it. Thank you SO much!!
This was helpful! I've gone down the protein/moisture rabbit hole and have been experimenting with adding more protein, which I had been afraid to do until I started watching Real Life Curly Girl. You've given me some new ingredients to look for, thank you!
This is so helpful. My hair is blonde and finer and wavy. It's not suuuuuper curly but curls when it's humid and cut right. It def curls if I scrunch it and care for it right but I just tried a gelatin treatment to see how it will help!
Finally someone who has similar curls to mine!! All videos have been super helpful so far, thank you!! It'd be great if you could share any hair up-do tips?
I love your videos! My hair is a lot like yours except much shorter. I’m new to curly girl and I would like to see someone with hair like ours with a much shorter hair demonstrate their routine also. Do you know of anyone like that? Thank you again for all your knowledge and please make more videos! ❤️
Austin Almond ~~ Same with me. My hair is very similar but shorter. I am about attempt to start the CG method. I have spent years trying to straighten & hide my unruly curls. Finally see some videos like this that makes me want to embrace what God gave me. Good luck to us both 🥰
Great info. It's best to start out with smaller hydrolyzed proteins that aren't in the top 5 ingredients then work from there. Also use only one product with smaller hydrolyzed protein like use a poo with no protein but a conditioner with protein and a styler with no protein protein.
You'll find a few options in my other video on protein. The link is on the top right in this video if you have any trouble finding it. Mill Creek conditioners are a great option.
One 'N Only Wholesome Brand came out with a Balancing Oat&Fig Shampoo and Conditioner. This balances the protein and moisture in your hair. It was literally a god send, it is amazing!
Hi! I just found you and like your info a lot! Love your nighttime routine for clipping and my hair is fine also. I have found Deva Curl products to work well...which do you like to use in the summer? Thank you!
My hair is pretty picky with Deva products. I can't use any in the Summer! And Summer is my nemesis! Flaxseed gel and hard hold gel that is discontinued is my favorite! I know that doesn't help much! Giovanni gel can be good but a bit drying or rough feeling from all the botanical ingredients. < Though that is not how everyone's hair reacts to lots of botanicals. But it is mine quite often.
I have. It has glycerin in it and I can't do major humectants like that in humidity it just attracts too much moisture. I get frizz and droop - the hold was not very good for my hair either. I will try it again since I have it but based on what my hair usually like and ingredients I haven't had much hope for it.
Thanks, Kat! Very informative. I think I need to do a good protein treatment soon. I think once a month is good for me. I do want to look for some Mill Creek products next time I go to TJMAXX. 😀
(using hub's account) This was so full of information! Thank you so much for making this! I have fine/thin/curly/wavy hair and I'm thinking about trying a protein rinse.
Just found your videos and they are all FABULOUS. I have curly hair very similar to yours. Use to dry it straight but decided to go with what my hair wants to do, curl. I have a question. Do you have layers in your hair? I am going to a salon that specializes in cutting curls and your style is exactly what I want and we seem to have similar texture except mine is a little thicker. BTW...You have beautiful hair.
my hair breaks and falls out all the time there is essence of me forever if i brush. i treatment 1pk knoxs, lemon, conditioner. not 1 strand fell out while i brushed. if her hair is breaking when you're brushing. u may need protine. i use super foods shampoo vitamin b6, shea butter, argan oil. still my hair would break off. and bee everywhere.
Redken extreme bleach recovery makes it instantly feel too dry. When i moisturize it after that it breaks. When i wash it with bond repair things or any repair anything it turns gummy. I'm so lost. I just want to wash my poor hair and have one normal ish hair day.
really useful info thanks. you are the first youtuber I've found with similar hair to mine so your tips have been really helpful. i love the cut you have. do you ever blow dry your hair? it would be good to see what your hair style is like dried straighter so we can see what kind of cut you have. I've always found it's easier to give a hairdresser a picture of a straight style to aim for than a curly style as most don't have a clue how to achieve the cut needed for a curly style.
So glad to find your videos. My hair is very similar to yours. I am wondering if you know what effects glycerin can have on color treated hair. I color my hair on a regular basis. I heard it may cause my color to fade.
Yes, glycerin can cause color fading and I have read certain other botanical ingredients like peppermint, rosemary, menthol and such can too at least for henna (cannot remember where I read this though). Red hair color fades the quickest and other things such as hot water, and other hair abuses will affect it as well.
Have you tried gelatin? I saw someone uses gelatin as an ingredient to flax seed gel, and some even use gelatin to make gel. That would be a LOT of protein, right?
Yes it could be a lot of protein, but I guess it also depends on how much is going in the FSG and how often you applied it it could be fine for some. My hair didn't love gelatin. I didn't have much of a wow from it. So, no, I don't use it.
I love Mill Creek Keratin conditioner. It's nice to have a protein heavy condish that you can mix or use alone whenever you need it. Also Nature's Gate Pomegranate and Sunflower condish. I don't see a huge need for protein in shampoo but it's fine either way. I like Noughty Intensive Care Leave In condish. Deva Curl products can be tricky but their Foam and Light Definging Gel work well for me under a harder hold gel in cooler, less humid temps (the glycerin in them make them a no for me in Summer). And Joico mousse (really all their products, but not all are CG) has lots of protein. Their are loads more brands and products but my hair is sensitive to aloe so I can't really try them. And, I haven't been using as much protein lately as my hair hasn't wanted it since doing henna to color my hair. Hope that helps.
Mill Creek Tea Tree shampoo, Nature's Gate Pomegranate condish, As I Am leave in. Scrunched w/ T-shirt. Bounce Curl (I think I used more than necessary) got dressed, spritzed a few times with water then scrunched in 2 pumps of Deva Foam. I don't love the combo- they way it feels. I think a medium gel or a different foam would be better. It's day 2 and it feels a bit waxy and not my best 2nd day hair for how good the weather is....keepin it real ;)
FitKat Style hi, new subscriber, loved your videos, i ordered 3 bottles of bounce curl, but i can’t use them, because when i use it, the first day hair is good, but the second day my hair turns so dry, bouce curl has many protein, so does it mean that i am proein sensitive? Please if yes how much i can use protein?
I started transitioning 2 months ago. My hair doesn't really want to curl, but that's because I've been using the falt iron for 17 years, once a week. My hair doesn't break though, wet or dry, that's good I suppose. I've been using Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor oil masque once a week, and my hair seems to love it. It's my best hair day of the entire week! I just noticed that almost every single hair product I have contain some sort of protein, somewhere in the middle of the ingredients list.
With damaged hair some protein is likely needed at the beginning of transitioning in bigger doses. And if your hair doesn't break it may be more sturdy/coarser to start with. So a bigger does for you may mean mid way down the list. Keep giving it what it wants until it tells you differently! Thanks for watching and sharing! Keep up the good work, it just keeps getting better as we learn more and our hair gets more healthy!
My hair is a nightmare. I decided that bleaching it at home, and then coloring it to match my gray roots was a good idea...NOT LOL. I've battled getting my balances right ever since. I've thrown it into both protein and moisture overload at various times, and still today can not figure out what my hair actually needs to be balanced. I have curls at the top, straight at the bottom, frizz, dryness, and breakage of the new hair coming in so it's like which direction do I head with this mess. I'm thinking a razor and the GI Jane look might be the best bet and just to start all over again. Just smh lol it's just hair that I've had for nearly 60 years. How the heck can it be so difficult?
If your bleach and color were at the roots too and it's breaking off there I'd say it needs both protein and moisture! Moisture first if you have to choose! I would cut out all silicones and sulfates from your products and follow the Curly Girl Method based on Lorraine Massey's book the Curly Girl Handbook. Kill it with conditioner (silicone free of course). Do deep treatments, add some olive, sunflower or grapeseed oil to that if need be and let it sit on damp clean hair w/ some gentle heat like a warm towel over the shower cap. But you may need serious protein and moisture weekly depending on what type of hair you started with but yeah, a hefty cut might be one of your best options! Sorry you're dealing with this. It will get better I promise if you stick with learning all you can and doing right by your hair!
Thanks so much. I do try to follow the CG method. I do weekly deep treatments (usually hydration/moisture only no protein, and then incorporate a protein treatment monthly). All the products I use in my hair are protein free and CG approved, but I do also have some that have protein in them that I can add if needed. I use one of those microwave gel heat caps and it seems to work well with the treatments. I have to be very careful with oils and products with color because they actually turn my hair that color. LOL I learned that the hard way by coating my hair in olive oil shortly after the bleaching and that was a huge mistake lol. I do use small amounts of oil mixed in with my leave in conditioner though. This has been a year or more that I've been fighting this crazy battle, and I think knowing when, how much, and how often to use protein without getting too much has been my biggest challenge through it all. Strand tests tend to leave me more confused most of the time as 1 end shows me one thing and the other end shows me the opposite, and this section of my head shows this and the section next to it shows that , etc. so I don't even bother doing them anymore. I did actually do a protein treatment tonight (I used the Nexxus Emergencee line-I'm not sure if it's CG approved or not but that's what I had available)- my hair was shedding something awful, breaking at the new growth, had no curl from the top down, and felt thin, and lifeless. My hair feels much stronger, has a lot more curl, and even feels thicker. I then followed the protein treatment with a deep conditioning hydrating treatment. It's probably been a month since my last protein treatment so as you said I might need to do them more often. I try to get my hair cut frequently to get rid of this dried out damaged mess especially on the ends. I have A lot of medical issues and take a lot of medications that tend to make my hair worse too, so it's just been one day at a time. Thanks again for the info it is much appreciated. Have a wonderful night!!!
Hi, is there any way anyone can help me? The hairdresser gave me a 'reconstructor' and said that it was 'ultra-conditioning' and i could use it as a normal conditioner. So I was using this 'conditioner every second day or so but leaving it in for longer as a mask, and I was noticing that I was starting to get really sticky feeling hair that was almost fusing together or sticking to itself after a couple weeks. So I went back to the salon and they said everything was fine and my hair felt soft and healthy. Then I did some research and found stuff about protein overload and I realised this must be what I have. I looked at the ingredients and everything I was using, from my shampoo to my conditioner, deep treatment mask and leave in had hydrolised soy protein, wheat protein, silk protein etc. About 2 weeks later my hair felt like complete hay when I got out of the shower and some strands almost had an orange hue to them. My hair started shedding a lot more and did not stretch at all, meaning it was breaking off easily. It's been about 7 weeks since my hair was at its worst and the ends still feel almost prickly/doll-like and the hair itself is almost crispy and dry. I've gotten rid of any protein in my regimen and am using a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and the same conditioner as a leave in. I have no idea how to fix my problem and I feel really helpless and like there is nothing I can do. I have tried leaving deep conditioner in overnight, clarifying, and putting salt in my conditioner but nothing seems to be working. Please help!
I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. Hopefully I can help! I would cleanse your hair, then add some oil like sunflower, olive, safflower, or avocado to your conditioner and let it sit with heat on it for 30 min or so. Rinse it off but don't shampoo. Every other "wash" I would co-wash or use a light conditioner as a your shampoo and a heavier one as your conditioner on the ends. Suave Essentials would work or even something heavier if you have a drier scalp. How often are you washing and what are the shampoo and condish you are currently using

I've been over moisturizing my hair for months and trying to find information about protein. this is by far the best video with I've seen!
So glad it helped!! And thank You!! 😊
You're the first person I've found to explain protien so thoroughly, thank you!
Gosh, thanks! Glad to have helped!
This is by far the best video - so clear and concise. Also, you are gorgeous and very easy to listen to!!! Thanks so much

@marcpossoff what are some good protein conditioners you suggest?
You'll find a few options in my other video on protein. The link is on the top right in this video if you have any trouble finding it. Mill Creek conditioners are a great option.
Where can you buy Millcreek products?
I get mine at TJMaxx for the best price. But also on vitamin websites like iHerb, Luckyv Vtamin and Swanson Vitamin.
One 'N Only Wholesome Brand came out with a Balancing Oat&Fig Shampoo and Conditioner. This balances the protein and moisture in your hair. It was literally a god send, it is amazing!

Yes low protein and high protein can exhibit the same characteristics. In most it doesn't but that is important to know.
Thank youuuuuuu😭❤️ this saved my hair

which bounce curl product did you use?
The Bounce Curl Light cream gel I think it's called. I won't be able to use it in humidity though b/c the glycerin is too high on the list.
