The underwater levels are accompanied by the some of the most beautiful music ever produced in a game, seductively nostalgic even the first time you heard it. I even remember my late grandfather overhearing me playing the first level and in stiff British commenting "Ah yes, the jungle beat."
@Pehc90 This run is aiming to beat the game as fast as possible, using every tricks and glitches known. Which required him to use that warp glitch for obvious reasons. No cheats were used however. And everything done in this TAS can be done on console. If you want to see a run that doesn't skip levels, check the first link the description and find your way to it.
@TogaManBQ Ignore the fact how long the video is. The run was finished at 24:25, where it says "Movie end". And it's 24:25 because there's a second long logo at the start of the movie. He skipped a lot of levels thanks to a warp glitch. Never says anything to "beat all levels", so this is indeed finishing the game in 24:24.
It's unbelieveable how creative this game is. The overall design, the graphics, the soundtrack, the game mechanics and even a 2 player mode. All this in November 1994... You can really call that a master piece.
@DenDhur Also, which I'm unsure if you understood, this is a so called Tool Assisted Speedrun. The runner was recording everything using an emulator in slow motion using save states and rerecords. So there isn't really that much gameplay skill involved. But as said, no cheats were used and everything done in the movie can be done on console in real time.
Cool. Obviously no bonus rooms but awesome job. I got the 101% in 58:50. It's easier you know in the first one, because in DK Diddy Kong's Quest you have to win the bonus room to get credit for it. This one, as long as you find it, you can mess it up, except with the one bonus room in Fear Factory. The bonus room with in a bonus room.
@lailum It's a TAS afterall, as mentioned. And TASes are made buy recording in slowmotion using save states. Everything done in this video can be done on console with some practice. TASes and real time runs are two different categories. If you don't like TASes you can go to Speeddemosarchive instead where the skill is shown.
This game used to be so hard for me T_T. I gave up on it when I was little and when I tried again several years later I still sucked at it. It'd take me days to finish this game even if I knew all these secret shortcuts. Whoever did this can be proud of himself. A lot.
This game doesnt get enough credit one of thr best games i ever played . There should be an award or something for this game is pure genius definetely getting the new one.
gaming back in the old days was the best! as a kid i never got that far in tmnt, donkey kong, battletoads, and i sucked at street fighter. but i had a whole lot of fun playing them. back then you could go to an arcade and become friends with random kids that joined your game.
Wow I'm impressed, you're really good with Diddy Kong. And you're an amazing player for completing Donkey Kong Country on SNES in a Tool Assisted Speedrun. =D
i remember my grandfather with all this memories, he died when i was playing DKC1 can u believe it? i was 6 years old and i was playing and in the next room he was lying and he never woke up again, thank you for making me remember him! Bless to everybody! my gdad is alive when i see this again
For the firebarrels, it will only hurt you when you stand on the middle of the barrel. Jumping through and landing on the side won't kill you. Sides of cannonballs can't kill you, so if you line up perfectly you can survive it.
@freight66 The run was using no cheats in the making. You can roll and then jump in the air, it's supposed to be like that. He sometimes falls down and starts a new roll in midair, this is a glitch. This run was recorded with an emulator in slowmotion using save states and rerecording. Everything done in this video can be done on console with some practice. If you want to learn how to do some of the giltches, I'll be happy to tell!
I've played this game since I was 5, and I haven't seen like half the secret places this guy uses. This guy is insanely pro with his diddy spin n jumps.
@Tomtelala Ahh thanks man - It's true, when I commented I was still sceptical whether I was thinking of the right level! Thanks for clearing that up! He did afterall bypass that world completely!
@mogruesome There are several enemies that can't hurt you in the early revisions of the game. The mini neckies for example. They can only kill you with their nuts, you can run through them without taking damage. Queen B can't kill you while she's blinking. You can jump through the fire barrels without getting hurt, as well as standing on the side. They will only kill you if you stand on the middle of the barrel. No cheats were used!
A warp glitch was used. If you have one character on the map screen, you can press a button in the corner between the first two levels to warp to the third world. It requires perfect timing and won't work with all versions of the game.
@SteelFork1 That was a warp glitch he used there. If you press a button, while having only one character on the map screen, where the road bends between the levels, you'll get this warp. It's hard to time and it only works with the earlier revisions of the game.
@GoldenPlatinumSTEEL No cheats were used. Queen B can't hurt you while she is blinking. Enemies like the mini neckies can't kill you, only their nuts, in the early versions of the game. And the fire barrels only kill you when you stand on the middle of the barrel.
@Druscaelan Most of the time he's just making a roll and the jumping again in midair, which is meant to be like that in the game. Sometimes he stops the roll in midair (At 15:42 for example), starts a new roll and then jump up. This is probably not intended to be like that, but it works. In Mine Cart Madness, a glitch is done so that you can roll and jump in the air endlessy. The second glitch is a jumproll which happens if you start a roll the same frame as you land on an enemy.
You can push any of A, B, Y, X or Start for that glitch to work. Note that you have to have only one character on the map screen for it to work. It works on all the four map corners on the first world's map screen.
After the first level he used a warp glitch to reach world three. To do this you simply push a button in the corner between the first two stages, which requires you to have only one characfter on the map screen. The fire only hurt you when you stand on the middle of the barrel. Jumping through won't kill you as well as landing on the side of the pipe. The glitch at 13:00 is dnoe by starting a roll the same frame you land on an enemy. Everything done in this TAS can be done on console.
My favorite level always was the first one on the glacier. When the snow picked up to a full on blizzard, and I played it in a warm place, gave me a feeling of comfort inside, idk why.
Wow the level before the snow boss was hysterical !!! He like cheated death about 10 times on one part lol. truly incredible stuff, makes the tough parts look like a breeze with super diddy.
@itzyourcrayons This is a glitch that you can easily do on your console if you know how to perform it. Here's an explanation: Have both monkeys, preferly Donkey Kong in the lead. Run (no rolling or jumping) into the mine cart. Now, ride the cart until you hit the Necky, again: No jumping. When Donkey dies, Diddy will jump out and you are now able to roll and jump in midair. To perform the second glitch, you need to start a new roll the very moment you land on an enemy, required perfect timing.
@edwardwhitsett82 One method of doing it: Have both the Kongs, preferly Donkey in the lead, RUN (no jumping or rolling) into the cart and ride straight forward until you get hit by the necky. Now Diddy will jump out and you'll be able to roll+jump in midair. The second part of the glitch is done by landing on an enemy the same frame as you start a roll. Note that these glitches don't work in all revisions of the game.
@M4VTCNH2 Yes, he skipped levels. As the point was to beat the game as fast as possible. That's why a warp glitch was used after the first level. And he did use shortcuts within the levels as well, see Slip Slide Ride and Trick Track Treck. You can pass the game by playing all levels and get all bonuses under an hour as well, without any problem. This run is not using any hacking or cheat codes. Everything done in the movie can be repeated on console.
@tripleknockout No modding, hacking or such. Only thing is that it is a Tool Assisted Speedrun. Which means it was recorded with an emulator in slow motion with save states and rerecording. But the only thing saved in the emulator movie file is pure input and everything can be done on console.
@saiyanwill The first glitch can be done by running into the cart with both characters, no roll or jump. Ride until you hit the Necky, the other monkey will jump out and you can now roll and jump in midair. The second glitch is done by landing on an enemy the very frame (1/60 second) you start a new roll. Quite hard to time. Also note that these won't work on all revisions of the game.
This game was so fucking revolutionary in its day. The graphics were amazing. And there were things about this game that I LOVED. One of the biggest were the hidden parts in the game that gave you bonus opportunities to get stuff, like lives or coins. A lot of people take Mario as being synonymous with Nintendo, for me, this franchise is synonymous with Nintendo. Even though I own both a 360 and a PS3, I still think about this game and the memories I garnered from playing it, over 10 years ago.
how'd you manage it to look like that? when i tried it with Snes9x (i was really making a sort of longplay with this game), the movie was completely messed up (it went on it's own pace and there were too many frames more than how many there were once it was finished). how'd you managed to have the speed run in top form for you, but it messed up for me? also, how does the Snes9x AVI thing work?
@M1XART The warp is actually at 00:57. If you press a button where the road bends, you'll get this effect. You must have one monkey and it doesn't work with all revisions of the game.
@MusicbyBenjamin The tools are slow motion, save states and rerecording. There are other tools that you can ues, but those are the main ones. Visit the link mentioned in the movie descriptions for more information.
@Konane47 Great! It can also be done with the three other places in the first world where the road bends. Three of them will take you to different places in Orang-utan Gang, while the last takes you to the end of the second level. There are also other weird warps in the game. One such run can be found on my channel. If you are interested in any other glitches, I'll gladly explain them.
This was one of the most fun and awesomest games I ever played when I was kid... and I REALLY wanted to own the game so badly that I fell ino a rut many times. Then after a long time of searching... I got it.
On Loopy Lights isn't there a warp at the very start? If you walk immediately back into the entrance it takes you to the end of the level? Not sure though...
@gameforfame121 There is no cheating involved. There's always an explanation to why he isn't dying. The bee boss can't kill you while it's blinking. Fire barrel only hurt you if you stand on the middle of the barrel. Mini neckies can't kill you, only their nuts can. Also, please read the movie description.
Which glitchwarp were you using? The one to Torchlight Trouble or Manic Mincers? I believe the record on console is a real time of 9:40. Here's the second best time in case you want to see: watch?v=nJOgJQZv3DQ&.
@MsCrys1986 He just used a glitch to skip levels, nothing with that in this category. I have explained how it works several times in the comments and there are many places on the internet, as well as youtube, where you can read about. So yes, he finished the game in 24 minutes and 24 seconds in real time, which shows as 00:21 on the in game timer because the timer doesn't run between the stages.
The first jumps he does hits the Gnawty. Then you have to wait until he is halfway down after the highjump before it is possible to hit it again. Then it has to jump twice etc. Jumping/rolling into him before you are able to hit it again has no effect and doesn't slow you down. So no, he didn't miss any jumps and he can't improve the fight without using a suicide strat which wasn't know when this run was made.
@gutmanship You should know that he was playing on an emulator using save states, rerecording and slow motion while playing. No cheats were used and everything done in the video can be done on console. Some enemies can be walked through without getting hurt, such as the mini neckies.
@Pehc90 Yeah, he used a warp glitch. If you have one character on the map screen, you can press a button (A, B, X, Y or Start) when you are in ther corner between the first two levels. This will make you warp to the level Orang-utan Gang in the third world. The timing has to be perfect and it doesn't work with all revisions of the game.
when this game first came out I had surgery scheduled and I got this game for an early Christmas present from my parents. I brought my snes to the hospital with me, I was bed ridden for a week and this game made that time not seen so bad.
There are 100% speedruns for games as well, including DKC. For DKC you only need to get all bonuses, as the game doesn't track the letters or any other items. If you wish to see the 100% category for this game, here is another TAS of it: watch?v=1qd9GGYqhCU. But the point is, as mentioned, to see how fast you can beat the game and this always skip things that aren't neccesary, also refered to as "any%". It's a challenge for people to do such runs and it gives the game a new challenge.
No one does DKC speedruns, or TASes, without any glitches. Simply because they make the run more interesting to watch and make, glitches is a part of speedrunning. There are however runs where specific glitches are banned. In this case the warp glitch to world 3, so you play through all levels in the game.
A couple of things.. - That shortcut in Trick Track would have saved so many hours back in the day. - Nice job showing off in TuT :) - What the hell Cranky.. "Well done Donkey" ? He was having trouble keeping up!
Sergio Correa Just so you know, this is a Tool Assisted Speedurn. I recommend that you read the description to actually know what you have been watching.
@JordMcDrummer Way too many have been wondering about that warp glitch, even though it has been a known glitch since the game came out :D. To do it, you press a button (A, B, X, Y or Start) where the road bends between the first two people. It requires perfect timing, only one character on the map screen and doesn't work with all revisions of the game.
What specific part of the run? It's normal that you can jump in midair after you make a roll, if that is what you mean. If not, I'll be happy to explain anything going on.
@jzwick89 That's either because the enemy can't hit you at that moment (Queen B while she is blinking, all neckies and mini neckies in the game, firebarrels only hit you if you stand in the middle, jumping through won't kill you) or because of bad hitboxes (Many enemies and bosses). No cheat codes or anything were used in this TAS.
There's a warp glitch there. If you, when having only one character on the map screen, press a button (A, B, X, Y or Start) in one of the four places where the road bends on the map screen (1 frame timing) you can activate the glitch. Not doable with all versions of the game.
this is crazy! There were some things I thought were pretty much impossible. Did you use the genie or anything? Like in Mine Cart Madness? Or was that just a glitch?
@Tomtelala i read some of the explanations and i'm extreme impressed. i played dkc with a friend back then and today and i just can't believe what i see. it just blows my mind oO unfortunately i didnt find where you explain the warp glitch. maybe its to late and i'm a bit sleepy. please explain it to me! and how did u discover it? does it work with the version 1.2 as well? awesome work!! thanks
@odiumimbues If you have one monkey on the map screen you are able to do a warp glitch by pressing a button in the very corner between the first two levels. The timing is frame perfect and it doesn't work on all versions. The fire from the barrels only hurt you if you stand on the middle of them. Jumping through them won't kill you and you can stand on the side of it.
This video is very cool to see, and a pleasure to watch.
no other donkey kong game just can not beat the SNES one there is no way! this game is 100% GOLD
Donkey Kong Country 2.
not all stages
No shit, sherlock.
I've been playing this game for 16 years now. It'll always be my favorite because that game kicked ass then and still does.
An incredibly MUSICAL game. So much is based on rhythm and timing, the spinny barrel snow levels being some of the hardest challenges in any game. The underwater levels are accompanied by the some of the most beautiful music ever produced in a game, seductively nostalgic even the first time you heard it. I even remember my late grandfather overhearing me playing the first level and in stiff British commenting "Ah yes, the jungle beat."
Thank You Tim Alakangas.
You waked up my Memories in old times.
when i saw the length of the video i did not think i would watch it without a blink of an eye... This was just beautiful/nostalgic
this game taught me one of my first english words:
EXIT
and im still reminded of it every time i see an exit sign.
this man did what i could not do still, in less than half a hour, major props
The world needs more people like you. Thank you so much for this!! Fooking awesome!
I used to watch this all the time as a kid
@Pehc90 This run is aiming to beat the game as fast as possible, using every tricks and glitches known. Which required him to use that warp glitch for obvious reasons. No cheats were used however. And everything done in this TAS can be done on console.

Man...i miss this so much...wow. those are some really risky moves there dude! Good job!! :D
I still think this is cutting edge, and amazing!
I loved the music during the swimming levels. So calming.
Cool. Obviously no bonus rooms but awesome job. I got the 101% in 58:50. It's easier you know in the first one, because in DK Diddy Kong's Quest you have to win the bonus room to get credit for it. when i was young i played this game for hours. one of the best snes games ever made
Because that is when the last input for the TAS was made. TAS timing goes from powering on the game until the final input required to beat it.
You just played through my whole childhood in less then 25 minutes.
For the firebarrels, it will only hurt you when you stand on the middle of the barrel. Jumping through and landing on the side won't kill you.
Sides of cannonballs can't kill you, so if you line up perfectly you can survive it.
Okay the dark cave level was insanely well done by you O_O
@freight66 The run was using no cheats in the making. You can roll and then jump in the air, it's supposed to be like that. He sometimes falls down and starts a new roll in midair, this is a glitch.

Watching this is fairly hypnotic early in the morning.
@SteelFork1 That was a warp glitch he used there. If you press a button, while having only one character on the map screen, where the road bends between the levels, you'll get this warp.
It's hard to time and it only works with the earlier revisions of the game.

Tompa A is a legend, like, really.
:)
@itzyourcrayons This is a glitch that you can easily do on your console if you know how to perform it. Here's an explanation:
Have both monkeys, preferly Donkey Kong in the lead.
Real TAS! Nothing fake with it.
Note that these glitches don't work in all revisions of the game.

never realized that in the intro Cranky is standing at the top of the original Donkey Kong game level.
Man, I love this game! Didn't quite beat it in a half hour, but at least I can say I did beat it along with the other 2.
Wow, that is some epic button control at 15:35 and forward!
Hi Mr Not-Having-A-Clue-About-Anything. Nice of you to have read the movie description learning what you have been watching, good job.

@Tomtelala Don't worry, I'm all good with the answers you provided, thank you for explaining! Makes me even more impressed with the Speedrun now...O_O
this is one of the first and best games i have ever played in my life
Good Job, not only skill but good memory, that's what you need on most platforming games. My Fav Game ever By The way.
Dude, your childhood is ruined if you didn't play this game.
This is a game that you would play ten times in a row with friends. Good times.

The bee boss can't kill you while it's blinking. Fire barrel only hurt you if you stand on the middle of the barrel. Mini neckies can't kill you, only their nuts can.
Also, please read the movie description.
I'm not saying it has good graphics by modern standards but the artstyle is terrific and is still pleasing to the eye.
Which glitchwarp were you using? The one to Torchlight Trouble or Manic Mincers? I believe the record on console is a real time of 9:40.
Here's the second best time in case you want to see: watch?v=nJOgJQZv3DQ&.
wow, when you're this good it's time to find another game to play
I remember when this game came out I was thrilled by the sound track
@ClaudioJeba Read the description. It's a TAS video, so it's meant to give the illusion of perfection through save states are rerecords.
@841junior No cheater here. The warp done after the first level is just a simple glitch.
i spent hours and hours on the DK games and was a average gamer at best but you sir are a certified beast!!!!!!!
when this game first came out I had surgery scheduled and I got this game for an early Christmas present from my parents. I brought my snes to the hospital with me, I was bed ridden for a week and this game made that time not seen so bad.
well, as it states, its TAS, which means you PROBABLY cant do the same things on a NORMAL version of the game..
still quite nice to watch
@kragle2008 Yes, DKC is indeed awesome! And thanks for clarifying your feelings about emulation as well as this game.
It's probably one of the worlds best games.
@Tomtelala So it doesn't work for the Android phone version on the SuperGNES app?
A couple of things..
- That shortcut in Trick Track would have saved so many hours back in the day.
- Nice job showing off in TuT :)
- What the hell Cranky.. "Well done Donkey" ? He was having trouble keeping up!
how much time did you play in order to get this level? how many times per stage until you knew every jump, every roll?
Cranky: "I'm sure there must be some bonus rooms you haven't found!"
@Tomtelala i read some of the explanations and i'm extreme impressed. i played dkc with a friend back then and today and i just can't believe what i see. it just blows my mind oO
unfortunately i didnt find where you explain the warp glitch. maybe its to late and i'm a bit sleepy. please explain it to me! and how did u discover it? does it work with the version 1.2 as well? awesome work!! thanks
@LSU014 I really don't understand why it is so hard for peopel to read the movie description :/.
