I think you're right. This scene hits so hard because we put ourselves in Luffy's shoes. The fact that I always tearing up watching this particular scene EVERY SINGLE TIME proves to me that this great moment is masterfully executed.
The part where Luffy is crying and hes digging his feet into the ground over and over like he doesn't know what to do with the amount and strength of his emotions... kills me every time

The moment Rayleigh kicked Kizaru's foot and saved Zoro and the strawhats is the closest thing we have on having the old generation save and pass the torch to the next generation. I'm sure Roger is smiling at his first mate thinking "My man".
I think you saw it the exact way it’s meant to be seen. And for the upcoming arcs as well. It’s not exactly what’s happening that matters compared to how it affects luffy. This is his time of growth.
Its crazy that you would think that this would be the lowest point for Luffy, not to realize that Oda had two entire arcs of pain, misery and suffering stored for him right after this one!
So there was lil' ol' me, face glued to chapter 512, reading the Strawhats get vanished one by one and thinking to myself "damn, Oda's really going there. He's really killing off the main crew. They got localized Ursus Shocks for free! Are we getting a new crew? What?". I get to 513 and all panic left my body.
