They always feel in their hearts that they shouldn't defend him, but their head tells them that they must, so they get on with the job. A secondary reason is often fame. The lawyer that defends Ted Bundy will get famous for it, and in doing so will attract clients, whether Bundy's found guilty or not.
Same with doctors treating criminals or red cross treating the enemy. People have the right to be treated humanely and with dignity even if they are walking down to the electric chair.
This man was a retired police officer who would break into young couples homes, tie both of them up, then proceed to have his way with the woman while he go back and forth between taunting the husbands and beating them. He would hide in the shadows for hours so the victims would believe he’s gone, only for him to appear again and continue tormenting them. This guy deserves to be under the jail.

This is so unfair. He lived his life. He did what he wanted to, got married, became a father, a grandfather, he got a lot of, if not everything he wanted. Now he is getting 12 consecutive life sentences, but he is 75 already. He was nearing the end of his life anyway. He experienced everything he wanted to, and got a "life sentence" which will basically just be a sentence of 25-40 years at MOST? And that's also assuming he lives that long? But then again, the death penalty would have been too easy. But still... It boils my blood that he disrupted so many lives, and got to live his own...
The families now know who did the crimes. He's not going to be able to hurt anyone else outside of prison. Prison isn't a cakewalk. The smell alone is unbearable.

Late response but I too was reading the book. I was about half way through when he was arrested. I lived through the horrors without being a hands on victim. When reading the book I was reliving the fear we experienced knowing he was prowling our neighborhoods. I could go on. But when he was caught (40 years later!) I cried with relief.

The death penalty was abolished in California before his crimes so he couldn’t be executed.

When they refuse you have to suspect wrongdoing.
1 - he started gov work in 1973 and finished in 1979 in a municipal job, years before a federal requiremant for federal and some state employees only.
2 - why suspect guilt?

I’d say the evidence brought against him is terribly intrusive. It violates or sort of privacy.
I'm so thankful I live in a much much better place. No area is perfect, crime happens everywhere but California is a really crazy and screwed up place with the most craziest things happening. Do your research before visiting or moving to that state. I wish I never went there back in 2014 and I'm so glad I wasn't killed because I almost was! California is a very bad place, a total disgrase. The federal government desperately needs to be over ran simply because if our country was properly ran then California wouldn't be as bad as it is.
