I’ve always had the utmost respect for the Japanese and their crafts and art. This is a prime example of the beauty and utility of Japanese traditional. Thank you for sharing. ♥️From Canada 🇨🇦
The craftmanship of this gentleman, a true artisan of bow and arrow manufacturing, is superb. Watching him making, in sharp details, all the processes to build an arrow, was my distinct pleasure. The professional level, displayed in this film, by Mr. Sagara Ya, is mesmerizing and inspiring. From Romania, with respect and love. Your admirer, Alex Baran.
I am in awe of the process and the craftsmanship to create these arrows. I am in love with Japan and always appreciate to see the process of traditional craftsmanship from there. Everything has a tradition, if not even a ritual. It makes you appreciate every single thing even more.
People of all cultures have people that take pride in what they do and are very dedicated. It is not some universal thing where all Japanese people are like this, and the weird mysticism people have about Japanese people always comes up whenever there's a video showing japanese people doing amazing things. But you take videos of people doing amazing things from other cultures and nobody is like, "everyone from that place is so dedicated". Just weird that this is applied to all japanese people because some japanese people are like that
Mr. Sagaraya. I am from Turkey and I am an instructor of traditional Turkish archery. Our arrow making process is very similar to yours. I would like to learn more about the arrow making process.
Thank you for showing me you craftsmanship. I feel honored to see a master arrow maker practice his art. In my next life I will become your apprentice and you will hopefully teach me. Bless you
Absolutely wonderful. I would love to learn that craft. The way I make arrows in the USA is quite a bit different. But traditional ways are disappearing, and that is close to my heart. Too bad there is no place near me to learn. Thank you for demonstrating your craft. By the way, can I buy scissors like those?
Each step has it's own deliberate process and purpose. Each arrow is so unique, yet it's purpose is so similar. Thank you for such an informative demonstration. May you continue the improvement of this work and prosper.
Many thanks " Elder ".. I have been a student of bowyers for 50 plus years..n still each piece,is a new learning journey, in itself! Thank you for sharing your craft!! 🏹🐺🧙♂️🦊🏹
This is very different from the medieval European arrows I have seen made. The finished arrows are more similar to modern arrows than the European ones. The European ones I have seen made left the string wrapping on the fetchings and tended to either be thickest in the middle or thicker toward the point, rather than perfectly parallel. The biggest difference was the nocks. In the European ones, before the nock is cut, the end is sawn to make a slot and a slip of cow or goat horn is glued in. The nock is then cut perpendicular to the horn. Because the arrows are tapered, the nock is bulbous and bigger than the end of the arrow it's on. These arrows seem to rely on the string wrap near the end to keep the nock from breaking. I have heard bamboo arrows have a similar shaft strength to modern carbon fiber arrows. Overall, I think these arrows would be more accurate. I think the European arrows focused more on being tough, perhaps because their wood isn't as good, or maybe due to differences in armor. Or maybe it's just different priorities. Very nice arrows.
Of course in European warfare accuracy with the bow and arrow wasn’t the point. Firepower was. English longbowmen would shoot their arrows at 45 degrees angle into the air above a line of charging knights. The successive volleys, shot off at rapid intervals would find enough targets to winnow the ranks of the charging knights to make it feasible for the pikemen to bring the remaining ones down.
I really appreciated the care given to the scything wrap on the front end of the fletching's. Shooting off the thumb makes this detail a must since a feather buried under your skin is no fun at all. As I understand it, this shooting style is more about form than accuracy. Lovely demonstration too. Thankyou ladies.

I have watched this video numerous times and will continue to do so. I addition to the beauty of Sagara-san's work, I find it relaxing and peaceful, a wonderful respite from most of what I see in media every day.

The start was relaxed, with the beautiful craftsmanship well depicted. But the end was extremely tense! Then came the release when the arrow was fired. What a great little film.
Beautiful Craftsmanship !! What a lost art. I used to make my own Cedar arrows. Cut raw shafts, stained them, clear coat, then fletch them with a left wing natural barred turkey feather with a left helical twist, for rotation and stability and taper the ends for field points. Then align the grain of the wood to be perpendicular to the riser of the bow, before gluing on the nocks, so that all the arrows , flex the same out of the bow, and have consistent spine.
This makes one want to travel to Japan to watch and acquire these arrows after completion. Incredible the hard work and detail that goes into a single arrow
Fascinating insight, ,,and I thought we had the unique Monopoly of the longbow,,,but these blokes know how to make arrows,, and their longbow are much more long,,,,but to what end?
What bird are the feathers (fletchings) from? What kind of wood are the shafts made out of? Domo arigato (3 X Nippon style bows) are these arrows for practice? Are there arrows used for contests or shooting from horseback different? Does each arrow shop or master arrowsmith have their own mark?
What neat work! I've always liked Japan. It's a pity that I didn't have a chance to visit there. Thank you for the video! (I am writing from Russia, a country that has shown itself to be aggressive)
