    Oh my goodness, I wanted to do a mitered square blanket by Purl Soho and I found a video in Dutch, but I couldn’t understand the technique, plus no other tutorial was showing how to demonstrate it the way it was shown! It was always on an even number of stitches with 4 decreased in all, so thank you very much!

    Thank you for a great video and a beautiful pattern that brings back great memories of crazy quilts. Please note that you're actually decreasing TWO stitches in the middle, not three stitches as you said on the first row. (-:

    I have been buying sock yarn to make a mite red square blanket for about 6 mos. I have liked at other pod casts and finally found yours and had an "ah-ha" moment because your video and explanations helped me to now finally begin my blanket. I love the "edge" you did and the black border around each metered square. Thank you so much. I am going to begin and do a few base squares and then proceed to your next blanket tutorial. Happy holidays😍😍😍Ellen

    Last year I decided to do a Mitered Square Blanket using your directions. Using the colours Red, Green & Gold with Black as the border, it may be a visual thing on my part but all I saw was the black. So I used the Black as the top and bottom of the work. I finally finished the project 13th March 2021. Thank you very much for these videos.

    Thanks for the great tutorial! I’m getting ready to start my blanket. I’ve never done a mitered square, and I LOVE the black border!! The name of the center decrease is a CDD Central Double Decrease....you are decreasing 2 stitches, keeping the center stitch on top. I see it a lot in lace. It can be done on purl side, but it is really a pain!!! Thanks again for just what I needed to get started!! Cheers!!

      Hey Meena, the technique to create the centre diagonal ridge is called a Central Double Decrease (CDD). This is where the THREE centre stitches are used to do this, however, only TWO stitches are actually decreased. If you listen to her stitch count during the video, you will notice she has only decreased ONE stitch each side of the centre ridge. Thus her total stitch count is only TWO less than the previous row. It is indeed very easy to do and adds a lovely detail to the square!

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, Demmi! And Meena, Demmi is absolutely right! I think I misspoke in one of the videos? But this is the right info. Sorry I haven't been around lately to respond, but I appreciate you jumping in, Demmi, and I'm glad you like it, Meena!

    Thank you so much for your tutorials. I am a fairly new knitter, and want to make a blanket with my leftover sock yarn. Your videos show me how to make this popular pattern, as I have never done a mitred square. I do hope, when you have time, that you will make written instructions for this pattern. I would happily buy a printed pattern too - so I can carry my work away from the computer. Found you on Ravelry BTW

    • @ladybuglily

      I use about 4g per square, but it depends on your gauge and size. If you used bigger needles or cast on more, you'd need more, and vice versa.

    Thanks for such a prompt reply! What's the purpose of knitting tbl of first stitch, if I slip the last stitch of each row as if to purl?

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure what you're asking.
      Every row, whether it's a right side or wrong side row, begins with a "Slip as if to purl, with yarn in front, move yarn to back" and ends with a "knit through the back loop."
      The purpose of this is to make the stitches that are easily picked up on the sides, and to make them lay flat. Without the ktbl and s aitp, the stitches would be all twisted and much more difficult to pick up from.

    Here is the thing I do not understand. When I try to do a mitered square this way I am only decreasing on one side. I am certain it is simple but it boggles my mind. I want to do it but I can't figure it out. I can do the square inwhich you decrees on one side knit the middle stitch then decrease next two stitches.

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. When you say you're only decreasing on one side, do you mean that it becomes lopsided, and only one half of the square "mitres," or do you mean only on the right side and not the wrong side?

  • @stockinettestitch

    Hey! I love your pattern and the detail in your videos. I have one problem when I knit the squares myself: they are all warped, as if the mittered diagonal line was too long for the square to sit flat. Does anyone know what I should do about it?

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, if you're not making the center ridge garter, it can "stretch it out," if you will. I've found that it works itself out as you pick up more squares on the sides, but you can also skip that purl stitch on the wrong-side rows and just make the whole thing garter.

      Sofia Panziera my reply is late. you are supposed to start your decrease 1 stitch before the middle stitch. so if you cast on 29 stitches row 1 would be
      row1-knit 13-slip 2-knit 1-psso 2-knit 13
      row2- knit 13-purl 1-knit 13
      row 3-knit 12-(start decrease 1 stitch before the middle knit stitch) slip 2(this includes the middle stitch, knit 1- then psso2) knit 12
      hope this helps.

    I don't understand how it ends up being a square because she's always decreasing.. shouldn't it end up as a triangle then?? Can someone explain this to me please, I'm confused :)

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! If I were decreasing on the edges, I would be making a triangle, but since I'm decreasing in the center, I'm basically "folding" the knitting into a square. You'll notice how the original cast-on edge (which was straight) bends in the middle by the end? That's because I'm decreasing in the center, pulling the two edges closer to each other. So as those two edges come to a point at the top, the bottom cast-on edge folds in the middle, making it a square, not a triangle.
      Try it! It's actually a little bit magical to see it happen for the first time. If you want to do a sample, just cast on 21 stitches, and on your first row, work 9 before you CDD. It works, I promise!

      I am just using scraps from my stash! They are mostly sock yarns, and almost all fingering weight, but so many different brands!

    How many stitches do you knit on row 3 before the decrease ?
    First time was 23 then slip 2
    So is the next decrease row knit 22 then slip 2?

      Whoops, just saw this! That's exactly right - each row it's one fewer stitch per side.

    What is the length of the cord you are using? (I have interchangeables). Most patterns I have see are done on dpn's.. Just wondering how long of a circular needle we would need.

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sometimes you DPNs, and I sometimes use 12" circulars. I like the circulars because I can never lose the second DPN, but interchangeables don't really work well for that.

      Thank you for your reply.
      I have 4” interchangeable needles, but the smallest cable I can get is 8”, I think. So, that would end up to be too long I suppose (16”). I might stick with dpn’s, less of a fuss.

    When I knit these... They turn out kite shaped. Not square. I don't know what I'm doing wrong :(

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. Are you doing garter? If you're doing stockinette, it probably changes your row to stitch gauge.

    • @dividedopinions5133
      @dividedopinions5133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandria Tyrrell Are you doing all of the decreases correctly? I imaging that missing one out would give you a kite shape and it's something that's easy to count wrong.

    could you use regular yarn? and what size knitting needles do I need?

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean by "regular yarn," exactly, but you could use any size yarn for this, you'd just have different size squares. If you're not sure what size needles to use, look on the ball-band of the yarn - it will usually tell you. :)

    Is it necessary to use circular needles or could I use two normal ones?

    • @ladybuglily

      You could absolutely use normal ones! Those are just the needles I had on hand.

    What needle do I need if it is 4 ply yarn ?

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just use whatever needle feels comfortable for you! As long as you use the same size needles and yarn for every square, then it will all even out, it will just change how big each square is.
      If you want to do squares in different yarn sizes, if your yarn is bigger than usual, go down a needle size or two, and if your yarn is smaller than your usual squares, go up a needle size or two.
      Hope this helps!

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, good question. Make sure that you're doing a center *double* decrease in the middle. You should be turning three stitches into one.

    This does not work. If you want a central ridge you have to decrease on both sides of the central stitch and not on one side only.

    • @ladybuglily
      @ladybuglily  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's right! That's why you use a central *double* decrease. That decreases one stitch on each side of the ridge in one stitch, and not on one side only.

    • @johnsullivan4431
      @johnsullivan4431 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but that is not what is shown in your tutorial. By the way I think your blanket looks is great.

    • @johnsullivan4431
      @johnsullivan4431 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally got it but would prefer to decrease on either side of the central stitch by working two stotches together. I Just made one and it looks great, however I will work one your way and compare them. Regards.
