    I am a Christian, and when I was serving at a restaurant I would often get to work on Sunday lunch shifts. It was incredibly embarrassing for me because many of the people that came in "knew" me from church and would say hi, then they would leave me or my coworkers a HORRIBLE tip. Sad. Very sad. This needs to change in the Christian community. Tipping is an opportunity to be a direct blessing in somebodies life, and God has allowed you to cross their path to show them the generosity of the Father.

      Caleb McLellan What would be better is if a restaurant would pay their servers a better wage equal to their work load and output so people wouldn't have to leave a tip.

      You don't understand the point of tipping do you. Tipping is to make sure the waiter does the best at there job. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world so there are a lot of people that don't give proper tips. Also the profit margins in the food industry are very small so if they would get rid of tips and pay the waiters more food prices would go up and service will go down.

      As Christians, they aren't required to tip. I live in Korea and don't tip - neither is it expected and it would look weird to leave money on the table because they wouldn't know what to do with it. Because it's a social requirement in our country (I'm also American) it might seem rude not to tip, but the fact is it's a bad system to allow you to judge customers for not paying more than the listed menu price. As a customer, I shouldn't have to be held hostage and be judged for not tipping when the employer isn't paying you fairly. The social norms put the restaurant owners in their favor, they get off easy.
      If you worked hard for several years in your restaurant, ask your employer for a raise if the minimum wage is 2 dollars or something in your state for servers. Since you're a Christian, don't use that title as an excuse to judge the people from your church for not tipping, instead pray for them and have compassion on them. Don't expect the tip from them because the social expectation is a cultural one.

      I think that's because bar people work regularly with people of all types. When you walk alongside others who are struggling in their daily lives, you learn empathy. Maybe it's just a case of more Christians need to walk alongside others outside their own circles, not self-segregate and self-congratulate. According to the Bible, Jesus regularly walked with people that would be considered the bottom of society. Maybe if more Christians did that, they too would learn to give more generously.

Shame on you.

      I used to have a couple of jobs where I was not allowed to accept tips. The company would brainwash us by telling us that since we were paid $1 more than minimum wage we couldn't accept tips because they were paying us extra to provide a service. Thank goodness now at my current job I make above minimum wage and can accept tips. We tell new coworkers to never turn away a tip. When people give, they give because it makes them feel good, and they want to express gratitude. The cable guy refused my tip because of company policy, so I cleverly followed him out to his truck when he had to rush away to his next appointment, I had him roll down his window and I quickly threw the $20 bill in his truck, said thank you, and walked away. It felt good. He worked extra hard and deserved it. I don't care how much extra his company pays him.

Those people deserve a tip, and christians should tip as a witness, not just to those who "deserve" it.

    • @justanoman6497
      @justanoman6497 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me, I only tip sometimes, depending on how much work is expected to be done.
      If I leave a mess (which I rarely do, but have a few times), there will certainly be a tip (or increase thereof)
      If I stay for a long time and sheets/towel needs to be changed, there would be a tip.
      If I took a bath and the tub need to be scrubbed, I will leave a tip by the bathtub.
      But if none of those are true (one night stay where I only took a shower and leaving no mess), I don't feel it's justifiable.

      I've tipped in Asia plenty of times. I often get a shocked look, then a smile, then a whole lot of appreciation. I think it depends on which part of Asia you are talking, but when people are poor, they will appreciate a tip. When people are generally well off, it may not go down as well. I think speaking the language and getting to know the culture and server (having a chat) will generally let you know whether a tip is appropriate.

    Tipping and generosity in general are an aspect of us having an attitude of gratitude. I've done lots of 'grunt work' in my life, and am blessed with a job where I don't do that so much now. But having done it or not, we all like to have appreciation for the work we do, and we all appreciate, or should, when work is done for us. Those that serve us by tasks we might see as menial deserve all the more some recognition and appreciation, if only because it's more rare that they receive it. "Freely, freely you have received, freely give."
    I'm not crazy about Christians "calling out" Christians publicly, or by making generalizations about them. I do agree wholeheartedly that Christians should tend to be more generous. It should be part of our testimony, as well as a result of our own realization of how much we've received.
    Finally, I just want to say that it does help have proper attitude about money being willing to give/share it readily. If we don't hold it too tightly, we're more likely to place proper and not inordinate value on it. We certainly cannot serve two masters.

Anyone who works with the public knows what a difficult job it is to deal with the public --worse when they are hungry! Tips are how we say thanks to them for making our life a little better and in so doing it makes their life a little better. Dave is right on tipping in hotels. I never used to do this but always do now. These people who make our hotel rooms so nice are often on the bottom of the economic ladder. This is how we can help lift them up.

    Dave I think this is one of your best videos by far. I agree with everything you said in this video. I would like to share a quick story. About 8 years ago I owned a restaurant who employed a lot of young people. I had a very hard working young man who was 16 or 17 at the time and him and his brother both worked for me and they came from a one parent household and several months back were displaced do to a house fire. We where talking about cars one day and I asked him what kind of car he wanted and he responded I don’t think about it we just have so much going on in our family right now it’s just not affordable. I really admired his hard work and positive energy so I told him I would help him buy a car and gave him a 4K budget needless to say it took him about 8 hours to find a car he wanted he found a mustang and bought it for $3200. So a few months back from that day I hired an accountant company to take over my finances at the restaurant I had been doing myself but had just been to busy to continue doing. So when they took over they found I had been paying way to much unemployment tax and they fixed it and didn’t say anything to me about it. The day after buying him that car I went to the mail box and there was a refund check for $32,000 ten times what I spent on that car and as happy as I was about the check it didn’t compare to the feeling I felt when I saw how excited he was about the car.

    I am a long time listener, went through the classes and live in Nashville, knowing a couple people who work for Dave. I picked up a job running sandwiches for Jimmy Johns and had a delivery to @TheDaveRamseyShow. It was a large order, with the bill over $330. After bringing in the 4-5 boxes of sandwiches, chips and silverware/napkins, I hand the lady the receipt, she signs it and hands it back to me. I walk out, not even really looking at the ticket and when I got to my car I was shocked to see what the tip was. I was tipped $3.00, yes, $3.00 on a $330 bill. That's a 1% tip. Out of all the places I deliver to, this is the last place I would have imagined getting an awful tip. I even emailed the radio show in hopes of getting Dave's attention to see how he would respond. The lady the signed the receipt was a higher up, because the person who let me in said she had to have someone else sign the ticket.

      People that think like this will never understand the joy of truly giving. Change someone’s whole day or even life by giving when they may have struggled to serve. I had the worst service once. Horrible. I tipped $100. Why? Because that woman needed a miracle of love in her life. I later found out when we went back to that restaurant 3-4 months later, and asked for that server. She had been diagnosed with cancer the day before we came in and tipping her that money helped her enjoy her last couple months. She told everyone about how she was struggling and how she had asked God to give her a sign that he was there that morning. That tip and love from me was her miracle. I cried when I was told this by the manager when they found out I was the one that tipped her.

    You have to admit it's gotten out of hand at some places, where EVERYONE has a tip jar these days...and the bar keeps getting raisesd, used to be 15%, now 18% is standard and 20% is for good service.
    I always leave 18-25% but there is a sense of entitlement from many. Come on we've all been in tough jobs at some point, no need to constantly complain about how you hate customers... Everyone knows serving is challenging but you don't HAVE to do it.

    With tipping, people usually pay what they're going to pay regardless of the level of service, with a few exceptions. So why not just pay servers a fair wage and build that cost into the food prices?
    Here's the thing. I'm a preschool teacher, and with a degree in education and years of experience, I still make less (often far less) than waiters. This is because my pay is only a few dollars higher per hour, and I don't receive tips. No matter how much of my money I spend on materials to make the classroom rich and engaging and no matter how much time I put in off the clock to plan an effective curriculum, I will never be paid based on the service I provide families and society. Does that seem right?

    • @gldnkltz101
      @gldnkltz101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Carol T. It's understandable why someone teaching college would be paid more than someone teaching preschool. But I'm comparing waiting tables with teaching young children. Supply and demand does not explain why our society feels it's necessary to tip someone for bringing their food but not for teaching their children.

      I agree you should find another profession or get an extra job. I have a teaching degree and job but I continue to bartender and serve on the weekends because the money is great and I enjoy it. Just because you are jealous of how much servers make doesn't mean you should short change them on their tips

    • @gldnkltz101
      @gldnkltz101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jessica I don't short change servers. I'm not necessarily complaining about my job or financial situation, I am pointing out the logical fallacies of how we tip in this country. We view it necessary to tip the guy who brings us our food but not the person who teaches our children. This view is so deeply engrained in our society that instead of us saying, "Yeah, that doesn't make sense," we say, "If teachers don't like it they should find another job." You are a teacher yourself and you're saying this!! Do you really feel that your work bartending is more valuable than your work teaching? That you should receive extra compensation for doing one job well but not the other? Just because that's the way things are doesn't mean it's how they have to be. It starts with changing our mentality.

    • @jessca3799
      @jessca3799 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +happy gilmore People working in the service industry are paid below minimum wage by the employers because if they wanted to pay them a "fair" wage the price of food would go up astronomically and no one would be able to afford to eat out. Who's going to pay $25 to eat a burger at Applebee's? Not me. Not to mention if servers had to work for the regular minimum Wage there would surely be a decrease in the quality of service you receive. Tipping in America is here to stay and it's not going anywhere any time soon so if you don't like it don't eat out. As teachers we do work hard and I'm not denying that but in no way shape or form should teachers be getting paid tips. I teach because I enjoy it not because of how much money I make or don't make and the same goes for bartending I enjoy the work but it just happens that I make good money doing it so I continue to do it along with teaching. If there wasn't good money in serving the public most people wouldn't be in the industry.

    • @gldnkltz101
      @gldnkltz101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jessica If the price of food goes up 15% instead of you paying 15% at the end, what difference does it make? It's the same amount either way. It seems like this idea is actually catching on, Joe's Crab Shack is implementing a $14 per hour wage and banning tipping. Servers don't have to worry about customers shortchanging them and customers don't have to worry about tipping. It's a win-win.

    • @nelsonariza4075
      @nelsonariza4075 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's the flawed mentality of it. Most people who do jobs that have tips tend not to report all their tips so they have more money to use. When you say "why would I give when no one gives me" you are treating it like an exchange of I do something then God or life needs to do something in return. You'll say that's capitalism, but let's twist it a bit. You decide you should keep everything that's yours. So then why not keep everything from you? Why not keep a promotion from you? Or maybe keep a cop from giving you a warning and instead a goes straight to giving you a ticket? If you withhold good, then why shouldn't it be withheld from you?

    For those arguing that we should get rid of tipping and pay waiters/delivery boys a flat minimum wage rate, please reconsider! Seriously, as a pizza delivery guy, I'm a pizza delivery guy because most days I get paid noticeably more(!) than min wage. Same with my aunt: she was a waitress and got paid more than min wage when accounting for tips. Same with my friend who is a waiter, he also gets paid more than min wage when accounting for tips.
    Finally, even on days when I get paid less than min wage, the business I work for is required by law to pay the difference. For example, if I only make $3/hour by tips, and the local minimum wage is $2.15/hour, the business is required to pay me the difference ($2.10/hour). So I am either making minimum wage, or I am making more than minimum wage! Seriously, the idea to get rid of tipping is horrendous! It hurts those many are claiming to protect.

We always tip well & over 20% if the service is good, but last week our server was so special! She (Sierra) was so sweet to these rambunctious boys, and actually talked & interacted with them!!! Our food was delicious and Sierra took the time to divide our serving dishes between the boys for us!!! Our check was only $39.94 (we drink water! But even at home!!!) I put a $40.00 tip on my debit/credit card! I was rendering my account and saw only the $39.94 has been taken out! I called her supervisor and he said that could have only been the servers error, by omitting putting in the tip !!! He said it is her second job, God Bless her. She must have thought we made a mistake by tipping a little more than the whole check!!! Don't worry, the boys will happily take her belated tip to her on her next shift! I don't like going out on Sundays anymore because that's when the service is the worst, and I am a Christian but don't want to be treated worse because I am one, and I think the perception is after church people are going to tip poorly so they get poor service and sure enough they tip poorly. I gave a massive tip in Japan. And the server was extremely insulted, and it was seen as rude behavior. Know your cultural audience. They don't get a tip, but their wages are a lot higher. Japan has the highest level of wealth in the middle class relative to other countries. Apparently tipping is related to prohibition in North America, as people would tip to get served alchohol, and employers reduced the wages because they found out about tipping. It was definitely educational to see other cultures.
