As a 16 year old with no experience, I've applied to maybe 20 places with no success, and not a single response. Literally, after my first application using this method, I got a response within an hour. Thank you SO much for this video. This was absolutely amazing.

Not that hard to believe. The person who wrote this comment is a 16 year old with no job experience, so all they have are personal stories to share in their cover letter. Those types of CVs are actually pretty effective in getting your resume noticed and helping you standout in a sea of other applicants, which is essentially the goal.
Really good tips and advices, but in all honestly, it's really hard to keep pouring your heart and soul into customizing EVERY cover letter, coming up with stories and try to be personal to the companies you apply to only to not getting any replies because of course not not every HR manager have the same expectations. Just want to let out my frustration here and say it's very hard to keep that attitude going.
100% right there with you. Very frustrating. The job search is more of a game than it is about qualifications. If you can't play the game, you can't get a job. At least that's what it feels like.
Yep, this is why my cover letters can be an emotional process, that takes almost 2weeks to complete. Gets demoralizing and depressing after a while, when you sense your soul is not being validated.
This comment right here highlights the crux of the issue. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in the same boat as many of you and dread the cover letter and resume crafting process. It's hard to predict which hiring manager likes a particular approach at any given point. There are way too many variables to consider, especially the managers mood at the time of reading a cover letter or resume and is making me discouraged. Let's not give up hope though yet.
I stayed up all night trying to personalize a cover letter only to find a rejection notice in my mailbox first thing in the morning. Really can deflate one, can't it?

I've watched a lot of your videos tonight.
And the more I watch, the more I realise how much effort one who looks for a job, for a PAYCHECK (most of the cases anyway) has to put into all this recruitment process, only for the recruiters to either be like "meh" or "ooh yeah, time to interview this guy/girl".
For all the effort you have to put in, to try to connect to each individual, to sound interested about a company and how it is working there and blah blah, when in the end, all you care about is the paycheck at the end of the month.
All that effort, writing different cover letters to comply with each company you apply for. All the effort, only to be seen (in a lot of cases) by an interviewer, and then not even receive a call back, if you weren't interesting enough.
Thats so true, i personally dont care about any company or individual, i just care about the paycheck cuz i don't want to end up broke or homeless. And its a lot of struggle to apply for a lot of different jobs and have to write a cover letter full of lies for each job to meet their standards and dream worker.
I followed this advice and got interviews at all the places I applied :) I was applying for healthcare-related roles in hospitals where a lot of the hiring in values-based so this method really did work a treat. Thank you for the video!

Your video is very good and full of good points. The problem that I have with the job hunt is that if you listen to ten different HR reps they will give you ten different ways to do a cover letter or resume. I have come to the conclusion that it is mostly a game of chance. Apply for 1,000 jobs quickly and you get hired. Or apply to 100 but take your time and get hired. Either way you spend about the same amount of time. Networking is probaly more important than any tips or tricks on a resume or cover letter.
We'd have to respectfully disagree. Taking the time to do your research and write a disruptive cover letter for say 5 companies that you want to work for is far more effective them applying to 100 or even 1,000. While you are correct networking and referrals are still the best way to get a job these days, knowing how to write a disruptive cover letter is a game changer when it comes to getting your foot in the door. Clients inside our program who had been "spraying and praying" before they got into our program, found instant success with landing interviews once they start using our disruptive cover letter techniques.
Getting varying advice on what to do can be frustrating but we stand by our method and have the success stories from our clients to prove it. Don't give up! Writing a disruptive cover letter could be that first step to landing your dream job :) - Hope this helps. Best of luck!

68TBoy, I am agreeing to you 101%. I've applied to so many jobs with excellent cover letters and not heard back from them. It's so disheartening. While I haven't heard from real recruiters or directors, I've surely made a huge impression on scammers! It sucks to look for a job while having all this great background and experience and not hear back from these companies I've applied with. Looks like I might just have to throw my experiences in the trash and work for a retail store as a promoter even though I myself have recruiting and HR, accounting, digital marketing background.

I agree but this one by far is the best I've heard and has given me the confidence to push through it. My previous cover letters have garnered no response.
The bottom line is you have to stand out; be it a cover letter; reference, direct email to hiring manager (I met someone who said it never failed her; she experimented searching for person and sending email after email until she got right combo)
i.e. - sent 100 emails daily to John.Doe@Dreamjob.com, or jdoe@dreamjob.com, or johndoe@dreamjobco.com.
Once you got the format (via guessing or asking or however), you got the email & it’s a numbers game.
Again she told me it could take 100s of tries.... but it NEVER failed.
I never employed it due to being in career pivot. I wanted to “build” a story. I got 4 certifications and delved deeply into how I’ve used them to benefit. Letters after your name mean nothing on their own. It’s how they can benefit via your story and how to apply them to your prospects

Honestly, this cover letter thing is pissing me off. Ok, I need a job and I open a job offering site with tens of job opportunities. Normally I'll send my CV to almost of them that I find attractive or easy, or to my liking. I'm no "Jack of all trade" so it's practically impossible to have a personal experience with a company or an out-let offering a job. So, in a nutshell, each cover letter is 99.99% lies or an exaggeration of our actual abilities. Forget about the cover letter and invite me for a trial - FINISH!

The thing is, when you look for a job, you see so many job offers and you usually apply to several of them, but it's impossible to feel attracted /to find that special connection/tell that amazing story related to every company you apply for. maybe many of these companies don't even create products that you might like or use, some of these companies provide services, conusultancy etc. I apply for legal jobs so most of the times there is no product I can talk about, I can only tell them how much I admire their work, their expertise or their culture /values, but that doesn't sound so original or disruptive ...
I thought the same thing. If you're applying for a sales job, then a personal story could work, but not for many other jobs.

Perhaps visit their website and read about their CEO or About US and write some thing siteing your sources. Like USAA has videos of each position you could reference something someone says in them. Who knows though Im not a big fan companies hiring systems or their HR setups. Can't even meet people face to face these days to turn in a application.

This particular video has helped me more than any other! Disruptive cover letters have helped me get interviews for almost every job i've applied to!! Before watching this I felt like an invisible loser, even though I have a master degree!! I watched this video for one reason and one reason only.... because I was asked to create a video cover letter for one of my Business Leadership college courses and I was terrified! Even though this video is 5 years old it gave some great advice that has given me confidence to write a great cover letter and produce it on camera. Thank you so much for putting this together!
I have been unable to obtain an interview for about five months. This is with professional help through my college. I created a disruptive cover letter, submitted a fully completed online application, and I was contacted for a telephone interview today!!! Thank you so much!!!
I've read hundreds and hundreds of cover letters and resumes through my career, some good, most bad and a few were exceptional. What you are describing is a trend in cover letter and resume design, nothing more. For today, it's good advice; yesterday, it was different and tomorrow, it will be different again.
The most important take away from this is, if you want to get a "Hello" you should understand the company to which you are applying and the trend in resume and cover letter writing and then tailor your cover letter and resume for that company. If the hiring manager/team is 55+ ex-military, he/she/they may prefer candidates who submit a certain document style, as opposed to a more progressive, younger hiring manager/team who may prefer a completely different approach to resume and cover letter design.
What about the other form of a cover letter called a "table letter"? It's a cover letter that contains a table with two columns. The lefthand column lists the job requirements. The righthand column lists how you meet those requirements. By doing this, you are making it easier for the recruiter to see you meet their needs and don't miss something.
I like this, and have seen it used in other forums. I would dedicate 1/2 of my cover letter to this formatting, making sure the other portion was personal and using advice presented in the vid.
I've heard this type of cover letter described called the T cover letter also.
The discussion points mentioned in this video can also work for University Entrance Applications. In Europe, many schools want cover letter (Letters of Motivation), and trying to customize a cover letter each University can be difficult at times. But these pieces of advice can really help make your cover letter less generic. Thanks!

If nothing else, it makes the writing of a cover letter more challenging and fun. I've tried this a few times; no success yet, but I don't dread writing the cover letter anymore!
Thank you so much for your advice! After writing the cover letter start to attach it to the ATS, immediately got 2 response from recruiters, and going to the next step. Before I put any cover letter, no response at all from any company for a week.
I wrote a genuine story about my journey about my work and life and didn't change my value to each company. I write honestly about what I value and what is "work" for me, I try to relate my value to the company's accomplishments.

11 months late here, but I found a couple examples in the description
Examples/personal stories sound amazingly cringy. While this maybe is working in USA I'm not so sure about Europe (Europeans are not easily impressed with emotional stories).
Another remark - everything depends as well on the personality of a recruiter, his mood at the time of reading the letter, professionalism, character. You cannot please everyone. It's really about luck most of the time (if you are a mediocre candidate).
The whole job search really does feel like a game with a good amount of luck. If someone with half the qualifications plays the game just a little bit better, they will get the job and you won't. Plain and simple.
I agree this may work in the United States. African recruiters want you to get straight to the point
I am actually thinking time of the day and day of the week is an affective factor.
If you email your application at 4.30pm on a Friday good luck at them proceeding with it or even remembering you over the weekend.
Same with calling emailing in the morning. Morning is full of meetings while afternoon then day is starting to drag a bit and wind down. An application or email to change the mood might actually get more attention and consideration.
@@maximusDAbiker I have had qualifications for 12 years and I still can’t get into a job I want. Applying for advertised jobs is never going to work for me. I need to target the much smaller companies now asking if they offer volunteering/work experience.

Thank you Ms. O'Donnell for explaining the disruptive cover letter concept. It is a shift from the previous methods I've learned about and used. By God's grace, I have been able to obtain interviews using the traditional cover letter approach and the disruptive cover letter approach. I believe the main problem is that there are not enough good quality good paying positions available for the large number of people who are looking for work.
The Unemployment rate is actually at an all time high. When the polls release the jobless numbers, they are only taking into account those who are submitting unemployment claims. There are many who no longer qualify for unemployment but are still looking. Additionally there are many who are underemployed and working in jobs where they cannot make ends meet. The unemployed looking for work are also competing with the employed who are looking for work (those looking to get a good quality and higher paying position from the one they currently have), so this just makes it harder.
In the end job seekers have to keep trying, stay encouraged and don't give up no matter how discouraging the job seeking process can be. Don't allow this process to rob you of who you are. You have great skills, you have great qualities that will benefit an employer, just keep moving forward until the right employer recognizes you and can't wait to make you an offer!! To all my fellow job seekers, stay encouraged and God be with us all.

Thank you, I've run out of unemployment and have been looking for a year. This can be very frustrating.
I don't know if it's the best policy on the recruiter's side to offer interviews based on personal connection rather than how well-qualified the applicant is. But I guess that's the point. You as the applicant are taking advantage of the human flaws of the recruiter.
Unfortunately that's their hiring style for most companies. The people that hire are as careless as the emoyees meeting the companies demands. No one cares anymore. They take the easiest route, nobody wants to earn their check anymore. The people in the hiring process are no exception.

How do I make the cover letter more personal if I've never used the company's service/products or have a life experience with them? I'm looking for a job now but most companies I applied for I've never heard of them or had experience with them.
She's saying that you have to flatter the hiring person/team/company..:) maybe at the beginning of your letter so it catches their eye and makes them more forgiving of your potential lack of skills … However I believe it's risky as some people might find it disingenuous and could feel put off by it.

But if everyone used the disruptive letter method, you all just fall into the same noise of all the others. What we job seekers need is more effective recruiters in their fields of expertise, I see far too many generic recruiters working on specialised roles and they really are not effective.
HI Pete, (this is JT responding), you might think that. But, the reality is no two disruptive cover letters are the same. That's why this works so well. And, most people are still too lazy to take the time to write one. Thus, doing this will always be a game changer!

It seems all of these videos are aimed at people who are applying for jobs in business and sales. Like others mentioned, sometimes there is little to connect with. Not all of us are super outgoing people. I am anti BS.
I find it painful to do cover letters. I am always worried I sound much better in the cover letter than I seem in person. I am just not a talkative person when first meeting someone. I am doing my best however.
I'm writing a cover letter at the moment and I thought that by including personal connection I was going to make the recruiters think I'm desperate. This video reassured me a little haha!

God this is such a breath of fresh air, why does no one tell you this?! I have been to several career councilors (albeit at university but still) and I have ALWAYS gotten the same bland advice. So happy I found this, kicking myself for not looking elsewhere for advice.
I enjoyed this and so many other videos on Work It Daily. Regarding the cover letter, what if there is no story to share? No connection to product or service? That the job description sounds exciting makes me want to send my cover+resume? Must we fake it? Fake a story in order to sound more compelling about why we want to work at XYZ Inc?

I work in a career services office in a community college. I'd say that only about 5% of students include a cover letter when applying for a job. HUGE mistake. Want to stand out? Send a cover letter AND write a thank you letter after the interview. It's staggering to know how many job seekers don't send these.
Hello there, not once did you mention job descriptions and how relevant it is to the cover letter. Very often the recruiting organisations refer the applicants to the job description- person specification. Any tips?

Most important thing is you simply explain how to write a cover letter. And your important tip is connect personally and create emotion impact person whom you writing. I think those three basic important tips key to get a job make good impression.
When you talked about making some kind of emotional connection, I thought that was great for direct hire positions, but how do you do that with an agency that couldn't care less how you feel about their client?
Please understand, I'm not denigrating agencies...
If I had to do what those people do, I wouldn't care about your feelings either. I need to make a short list of people that my client would think are worth interviewing, and I need to get it done 10 minutes ago, because we're not going to make any money if the client hires through a different service.
So, assuming that you agree there is a distinction between direct hire and agencies, what would be the appropriate strategy?
For reference, I'm thinking:
1. Intro line that refers to position.
2. Why I'm submitting a resume.
2.5. Mentioning that I am prepared to relocate. (If that's appropriate to the submission)
3. My interest in other positions they might feel I am a good match for.
4. Thank you, have a nice day.
I had one question about this "disruptive" approach. I have watched and read so many articles on cover letters and how to make them affective. This is the first I heard of the "DISRUPTIVE COVER LETTER". I like this approach because it is not selfish and puts emphasis on the employing organization( which is different).
However, with many cover letters, we all know you want to mention your skills and attributes and how they will "add to the value of the company" or how they would help you be a "good fit" in the organization culture (showing you researched the company; not just throwing a cover letter together.)
So in saying this, where would these attributes you mention be within the cover letter. "Get them at hello", I am assuming this is part of the introduction? Maybe the main body? Could you clarify and advise on this?

Interesting...started out pretty helpful and then turned into a commercial for Work It Daily. Unfortunately, a lot of online jobs don't require or even have a way to submit a cover letter. What then? You'll need to find out if you even can submit a cover letter before spending "one to two hours" on it. Next!

I am extremely passionate about it but I’m afraid that if I write a letter explaining how passionate I am about it, it would just be discarded as another “fan boy” letter and not be taken seriously. You don't always know the company, many cases you apply via recruitment companies...
Hi Edina. That's a great point. First try and ask your recruiter from the agency if they know the name of the person who will be receiving your cover letter. If that's not an option put "Dear Hiring Team," instead. I hope that helps!

if you have little experience for job you are applying for, is it good to add school projects in your resume and cover letter. For example you apply for autocad job and you have little experience in that job, however you did a autocad project in your class. Is it good to add that in your cover letter/resume

Hi! I'm loving the content you gift to people like me, who are young and looking to start somewhere.
However, i must say, i find myself kind of complicated to apply your advices considering my context.
I live in Chile, and from what i've learned, recruiters are kind of in some kind of automatic mode when it comes to selection.
Business usually are small or new, and in the worst case, business are hiring through another business who manages their hiring process. So, my question is; how do i make an emotional connection with people that are not emotionally connected to the enterprise they're working for? How can i get their attention?
For a little more context; i'm looking for a job on sales or some kind of more communicative role in a business. I believe that i have some great skills, but i'm failing HARD on making it show appareantly. Thanks!
This is actually the easiest way to apply for me. Reason is because they're not emotionally attached! just send them your resume, and tell them you can do the job, show them some experience, and in my experience that is enough. Think about it, they are a recruiter, all they care about is putting someone into that job and getting that commission! Just show them you can do the job, be polite and show some personality and you'll be fine.

My dad is a former IT with Kroger, The way he told me how he got his job was that his boss told that he saw how much effort he put into learning and getting the following experience he needed for that job.

I have been working for a company for 20 years and I have a briefcase full of awards which I received delivering cross-functional projects. In the last 10 years I have applied for 6 jobs internally, my application is turned down and all I hear is that I do not qualify for the job :) I have tried almost all methods of preparing cover letters and CVs. Am I disappointed? No.
With employers and recruiters receiving over 150 emails, or more, a day with regard to job openings they do not have the time to read your personal experience in a cover letter. Short, simple and to the point garners more attention than someone's blah, blah, blah personal story.
I'd have to respectfully disagree Chuck. We have had hundreds of customers come to us saying that they've been using the short and simple method to no avail. They go through our cover letter tutorial, work with our coaches to perfect their cover letters and then they're getting interviews and finally hearing back from recruiters. It's a proven technique and we stand by it. What it does it makes you stand out from the noise. While we do advise that you tell a story, this doesn't mean the cover letter needs to be long. It can still be short and simple but it's saying something that all these other cover letters aren't ... that you've done you're homework.
I put cover letters in the trash, I recommend that candidates don't do them. Resume is the key! Anything else I need to know, I will find out when I speak with them.
Whenever people would send me resumes, I NEVER read their cover letters. I just wanted to see what experience they had.
@@okhal, couple of months ago in El Segundo California - I was attending a Tech job fair and there was a resume coach for quick sit down. I asked about the cover letters, are hiring managers, HR staff reading my cover letters, is it even necessary? Of course I had both coverletter and resumes! I was advised and coached to only to focus on the top portion of my resume.
This is a great concept! When applying online, is it feasible to say that online Cover Letters are also reviewed?

Writing a cover letter puts me down as soon as I see applying to a vacancy requires one. I hardly ever succeeded in getting invited for job interviews I applied for myself using a cover letter. All jobs I worked I was recruited for by external recruitment or job agencies. Those are my friends as they take at least one hour of speaking to you to try and get to know you, besides the time they spend in reading your CV in detail. And they spend hours in getting to know the hiring manager, team members and the working culture so all in all the chances of them making a good match are much, much higher than you judging these same points just on a vacancy text. And perhaps some Glassdoor research, if relevant information is available that is.
Now I do not see the need and relevance of spending hours and hours in trying to write one cover letter for a job that maybe is nice judging on some generic key words in the vacancy text. They spend less than a second judging your documents using software, which is down right insulting looking at the time spend by the candidate, and even if they see your documents they spend less than a minute checking everything. Now tell me: why on earth would I want to work for a company which sends out such ignorant signals to candidates? And a company of which I know nothing? How can I write an honest motivation why I would love to work their and should be hired? I have rarely find the answer to that. As many people write in the comments: I like to work and I like to work because I get paid for it. I already spend many hours in voluntary work so pay me well for the other hours in which I use my skills and expertise. I like my work, regardless of where I do my stuff. Companies just throw you out after use anyway. Loyalty conflicts with shareholders' interests, it is as simple as that. If a company offers me a one year contract with the option to extend if proven suited for the company or something, that "suited" they know after 2-3 months. So why wait for another 10 months? That shows by itself that your skills etc. are not the sole reason. It only allows the company to show for themselves that your role is still financially fitting in the departments resource planning, nothing more. Strive to get a permanent contract, many people advise me, as it will give you certainty! Sure, look at the current corona situation to see how "certain" a permanent contract is. A permanent contract means nothing more than a contract for the longer term. Keep all options open and never start to love the company you work for as you never know when the company stops loving you or your job. So when you work for a one year contract, start orientate yourself after 9 months. And if you get an offer somewhere else to work for 12 months but you have to leave your current role after just 11 months? Well, it means you have more certainty for the next 12 months instead of waiting 1 months for a possible extension, in case your salary fits the departments budget for the next year. Take the initiative to yourself and determine your own career instead of being thrown around by shareholder's interests.

I don’t understand recruiters have a degree in sports science, marketing etc. and they are recruiting for the role of engineers, IT professionals of which they have no knowledge about the skills and terminologies.

I've been told by a HR gal, who reviewed my resume and was my niece's friend, that she thinks I'm a catch and offers such a wide variety of intriguing things for a company. Yes, I am that Jill of All Trades, yet I do have focused talents/skills to help a successful company or even a struggling company. Question for JT... I've applied online for a first of 2 positions that a company posted that I want to apply for, however I ran out of time to truly make my cover letter right. How do I not let that first one ruin it for my 2nd position that I'm gonna apply for tomorrow? I filled in all the spaces + uploaded my resume & CV for it. Let's be realistic here, the cover letter you're recommending is an emotional one!! Definitely, this won't work for engineers and managers.
The resume will speak for their skill level. Cover letter is going into the psych of the applicant. It reveals a lot about the person they are.

Pardon the late response im putting in the work now to get a new job with a much higher salary so I can leave the one im at. I understand that you have to connect, but does that also mean fundamentally with the font of the cover letter itself? Our eyes naturally are drawn to big letters, words, bright colors and objects. Is the size and font of the cover letter just as important as the story I desire to connect them with?
