- So will my IBM/Lenovo x3650 M2 do VMware ESXi 7.0 with the new Intel Xeon x5679 processors.
Will it also be able to use NVMe storages.
We also try some multi boot software called "Ventoy" (A Bootable USB Solution)

That installation of this was SO easy,, an EXE file, it saw the USB stick and asked it that was the one,, YES install. And then you just copy your ISO files to the USB.

Hi. You can try to add allowLegacyCPU=true ESXi boot option which will allow you to bypass the unsupported CPU during the installation/upgrade. To do so, just use SHIFT+O and than add option.

Yes, that is the correct thing to do. Been using it for a few months now, works beautifully on Xeon 5600!

You can boot from NVMe with a firmware that supports it, when missing, there's a utility you can use called Clover which you boot from and then that boots the NVMe storage. I'm sure you'll love this little hack. :)

You can install ESXi 7.0 on the x56xx series. When booting the installer, you can press SHIFT + O and then at the end of the line, add allowLegacyCPU=true and then you will be able to bypass it. You can read more about it on my blog here blog.masterwayz.nl/?p=255

Regarding your memory problems, are you using all 18 DIMMs? The X5600 series CPUs will only operate at full memory clock speed (1,333MHz) with a maximum of two DIMMs per channel. If you populate all three DIMMs, this limits you to 800MHz clock speed. As a result, on the M3s (and presumably also on the M2s) you are limited to a maximum of 192GB of RAM using 12x 16GB DIMMs if you want to stay at maximum clock speed.

The IBM x3650 M2 does only have 16 DIMM slots 3 in bank 1, 3 in bank 2 and only 2 in bank 3
I do believe it is 1333MHz with one DIMM, 1066MHz with 2 DIMM's and 800MHz with three.

Looks like the difference between the x3550 and the x3650 is the chassis it's mounted in. They both appear to use the same motherboard, at least after a point in time.

It is pretty smart, from a services and parts point of view.
You can rewrite the Asset information (x3550) using some Tool from IBM- which you can download when registered on IBM site.
Yes I do know about this,, they use this, to also set the S/N when you get a new system board :-)

you need to mod the BIOS to activate bifurcation to split it to 4x4, the bios mod forum is a good place to learn more
I do not believe this old server does that.
I have a few servers running with these old Westmere-EP Xeon processors on Super Micro motherboards, and according to the manual, depending if you use memory sticks with single, dual or quad ranked memory modules and depending of the number of memory channel you populate, the memory frequency will be limited because the memory controller can't achieve higher frequencies with the higher "ranked" modules (dual or quad). So I suppose that's a limitation of the processor and you have the same behavior here with a IBM/Lenovo server.

It turned out that the x5679 only run 1066MHz and not 1333MHz
I just installed ESXi 7.0b on my awesome IBM 3550 M4 no problem. It complained about the same CPU warning, but allowed me to accept it and continue.
That is a generation newer..
This wasn't the same warning - your one probably complained that CPUs could not be supported by NEXT GENERATIONS of ESXi. That one, which Morten got said that his CPUs ARE ALREADY not supported ;)

Hey man, I’ve been looking a lot of your videos the past couple of years and I came across an video of you reviewing the DL580 G7 server, I own a few servers myself (1 Supermicro SC846, 1 DL385 Gen 8 - 25 disk SFF, 2 DL380 G7 servers, and 2 custom build servers) my plan is to ditch the SC846 for another DL385 Gen 8, and ditch the custom build servers for 2 DL580 G7’s, because I run my own gaming network the workload is more memory intensive than CPU intensive, I’m only beginning to looking into high end servers, I’m young just finished school and I’m asking you for a recommendation of what to buy next and maybe you can help me get a great deal on the DL580 because I searched all over eBay but could not find a nice deal with rack rails and hard drives included, my plan is to use 1 DL385 for storage (backup) and the other for player databases (MySQL) and the rest of the servers for running the game servers and websites of the network, if you have suggestions or have some links to put down you can always contact me at bradley-methorst@outlook.com

VMWare support old CPUs? What were you thinking?
I was thinking that I would do that if I was VMware.
where do you find 1366 socket heatsinks for a diy server, cool rack there but wife wont accept those machines so i have to go more quiet stuff :)
Google the socket and heatsink,, and tell the wife that you need an enterprise server for each pair of footwear she has over 5 :-)
@@MyPlayHouse we allready have a agreement that says if she gets a new plant/flower i get a new computer :) (doesnt work but i can hope) there are plenty of heatsinks available, they are for multi sockets 775 to 1366 to 1155 and amd but they are so huge that they might not fit on that old dual xeon intel board because of the width and used server versions are hard to come by. maybe ill just modify them with a hacksaw :)
Maybe consider doing noise removal on the video audio. Very easy to do in post and I'm sure the community will thank you.
I have tried,, have not yet found any settings that does the trick :-/
You can probably fix the motherboard model number by updating/changing the DMI string.

speaking about multi-boot usb drives, if you have a windows installation handy, alternative multi-boot makers are YUMI from pendrivelinux, and things like xboot, yumi USED to be infinitely more friendly with unrecognized iso files than it has been in their more recent releases, so if you try and run things by way of "add unsupported iso by" grub4dos, and other alternative ways at the bottom, its been erroring out for me lately in the last like 5 releases, but either way they exist and can be used in any case.

@@MyPlayHouse If you think about it because Dell, EMC2 and VMWare are all in some kind of strange love triangle, they're probably hoping you'll buy more Dells if VMWare stops working on them. But also vendors like Dell, HP, Lenovo tell VMWare they want CPUs dropped to sell more and pay for them to do it.
I've never seen an NVMe drive with a heat sink on it before...
It is supposed to last a little bit longer if cooler.

Yes but it need cpu that support specyfic instruction e so for example xeon e5450 won't run HYPER-V in server 2016 and server 2019. Oldest cpu that support it are xeon x34xx or i7 1st gen.
I am sure Hyper-V is working, I have seen more that Microsoft is not pushing Hyper-V anymore because they really want you to be using Azure,, they want a monthly link directly to your bank account. Same will most likely soon happen in win10 something will soon cost us a monthly fee.
@@MyPlayHouse I do not believe that Microsoft will start to charge a monthly fee for Windows10. It would destroy them in my opinion. What they will start doing however, is forcing us to use certain apps (from them) if we want to do certain things on their platform, move more and more of this into the cloud and push more and more advertising. But, you may be right and they might shoot themselves in the foot with a subscription for Win10.
@@MyPlayHouse No it is still needed to make it work. This instruction is called "intel vt x with extended page tables".So if you want HYPER-V you need buy minimum cpu on lga 1156 or 1366.
