The final scene between Duke and Lauren Bacall is extremely moving. I'm glad The Duke went out with a wonderful movie. I think he should have had an Oscar for this as well.
"The Shootist" - what a super underrated movie. To Wayne' fans that have not seen it, what a treat you are in for. It was his best performance bar none.
You're right, criminally underrated. But I've just seen Wings of Eagles. I'd say his performance there was even better. Better than The Shootist and The Searchers. From comedy to drama it had it all. Superb. Go see it. It's an unforgettable movie.
His final movie had be hard, he knew he had cancer and in some scenes the acting is heart felt, the suit he wears on his birthday is the best suit he ever wore, and when he tells Lauren goodbye, they both know its their time, rest in peace duke
@denroy3 yes he did, the scene where she's trying to get him to leave is heartfelt, when he tells her "I have a cancer, I'm dying, she stays still for a minute, then quietly walks out to look out the window, that was genuine, no acting there,
I think he designed that shootist scene as his statement of final commitment + expression to/of the industry that made him great, but didnt give him his worth. He had a good ride tho & didn't turn back to her in the end. That's my best John wayne moment ever.
@@u.s.paratroops4633 art is a gift for a platform of perception and creativity to the receiver.. you think it's just a man and woman because that's what you know about John Wayne, I know something different about him and that's my feel of this until he says otherwise.. thx for your contribution tho. At lest it meant that to you.
"That's the naphtha." FYI Naphtha is a flammable liquid made from distilling petroleum. It looks like gasoline. Naphtha is used to dilute heavy oil to help move it through pipelines, to make high-octane gas, to make lighter fluid, and even to clean metal. It was used in the early days of dry cleaning but has now been replaced with more safer chemicals.

Lauren Bacall was stunningly beautiful, even in her 50s.

The scene when he says goodbye to Lauren Bacall just kills me....
I know 😭. The terrible thing is in the movie John Wayne's character is dying from from a cancer, then a year later he passed away from a cancer. 😭
3 years later
@@joejennings5470 Possibly a Genghis Khan movie in Utah...radioactive???
Yeah that's definitely what led to the cancer but he died June 11 1979
@Frank Castle Outstanding scene.....
The last cowboy.
This reminds me once again why I think the Shootist is John Wayne’s best movie. In fact, it’s one of my five favorite movies.
Someone once asked me what the definition of poignant was... I used four words to answer them. " Goodbye Mrs Rogers goodbye Mr Brooks." 😢
His final movie had be hard, he knew he had cancer and in some scenes the acting is heart felt, the suit he wears on his birthday is the best suit he ever wore, and when he tells Lauren goodbye, they both know its their time, rest in peace duke
And as you know Lauren's husband, Humphrey Bogart also died from cancer.

Happy birthday John Wayne from Wayne sigmon 2023
Minor thanks to the bartender. Books otherwise would have survived this gunfight, which was the last thing he wanted.
Happy Birthday

Nahh...it was just a goodbye b/w two friends. The last goodbye and fulfilling a man's dying wish
@@u.s.paratroops4633 please elaborate... You cliff hanged your comment..
@@keithmugisha5205 Just something simple b/w a man and a woman...

In some cultures, dying on one's birthday is said to be a special honor.
“ Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first understood.” - Leonardo da Vinci.
Happy birthday and RIP
Happy birthday 🥳
Just as Books had said earlier, it's the sidewinder behind you that you have to look out for.
Bond controls her emotions so as to give nothing away and in doing so gives everything away.
I'm so glad they changed Gillom for the film, he was such a bastard in the book
He went out like a man on screen and off
Richard Boone ..!
I’ve never understood why the bartender got involved with the fight at the end?
Fame and glory.
What does Laren Bacall say after John Wayne replies "Its a little smelly"?
All I can get is "that''ll be the ...".
Thanks

I always thought it funny because Nafta soap smells awesome to me...

The last time we’d see that famous walk on screen.
