Glad the break isn’t too long. The push for GM realistically can’t be a short one and taking breaks between tournaments is healthy

Its good that Levy knows when to slow down and take it easy because its very easy to get carried away with tough losses like these and play more tournaments out of frustration. This is the difference between levy 1.0 and levy 2.0. Anyway, Rooting for you levy! We all know that you'll make it someday, its just a matter of when.
Much love!
@@nideeshthecuboy2682 It is easier to get carried away with small victories like those he had in Italy. He beat a 2100 with a forced queen sacrifice - Levy's immortal game. He won the last game against a GM who happened to his coach friend and who gave him a slight advantage. Levy: I played like a GM.
Maybe it will take him 3-4 years for him to get to GM
@@steremihai1646Why are you like this? Serious question.
@@steremihai1646 nvm
@@steremihai1646 Yes indeed.
I think comment reading is negatively affecting you more than you realize. As a subscriber of 4 years now, I get that you "revel" in the negativity from your haters but that's not really what I'm seeing here ngl. Sure you going back and forth roasting and getting roasted on twitch is funny and all but that's just you being in a moment during a non serious period. But actually paying attention and reading hate comments alone will definitely have some sort of bad effect on your mental and what not. Why not just pre record some videos and not get involved with the channel during tournaments? I'm sure Lucy can upload for you during that time. I'm totally yapping here but I just want you to succeed man, we all do. Just hope you can get back into your groove after the break. Love from the fans who have some semblance of intelligence.
simple solution
disable comments
He can also just upload the recaps and decide not to read the comment section. I fully agree with you that getting emotionally involved in the stupid comment section is unhealthy
He not gonna read that, you should feel bad for trying lol
Everytime he focuses more on the negative comments, which are like max 5% if being generous, and he lets those comments get under his skin. This is demonstrated by his tweets and that "pin of shame" thing, which I really doubt makes him feel better.
At this level of chess, and at this level of popularity, negative comments shouldn't even remotely be an issue for a 28 yo person. On top of that, he still seems to care more about making content instead of giving maximum priority to rising his chess level.
He really should just follow the advice of his coach and stop making recaps immediately after his matches. His mental focus is too much unstable, and unless he doesn't improve that, his path to GM is almost impossible
Its his fault for paying attention to the haters. You really think saying all that is gonna help him?
Levy, don’t give up!! Take some rest, recharge and come to U.S. Masters in Charlotte, we got Fabi playing!!
Didn't know you could be that wholesome😉
You're sacry but supportive indeed
the strength it takes to publicize your goal and explain the entire process of what you went through losing it is enormous. I really cant explain how much I am rooting for him at this point. I hope he takes all the rest he needs and then maybe we will see him happier and emotionally, mentally and physically healthier one again.
@@AarushiSingh11 or maybe it’s his way of coping. If he can explain it in a popular video he must be doing something right. When he really needs to be studying. He has the work ethic but not in the right place to be a GM at this current rate.
Hey Levy just a suggestion, and I mean this with all sincerity.
You should genuinely consider not doing as much content when you’re playing your classical tournaments trying to chase the GM title. I know you want to do as much as you can for your followers and fans but I think the road to GM is a very serious one that requires your absolute and undivided attention. You should let your coach do any recaps for you (you can tell him your thoughts at key moments) if you want to do recaps after your road to GM classical games and then you can rest more and recover more without so much stress.
Just a suggestion. As a follower and fan I want to see you succeed and get that GM title but I don’t think that it will happen while you’re under so much heavy stress with everything else you’ve got going on.
Wish you all the best of luck in your journey to GM Levy!
Good suggestions! My addition would be: do recaps WITH coach AFTER the tournament. A sort of tournament review thing, maybe?
I was honestly shocked to see Levy uploading vids during the tournaments.
Like, Levy, dude, forget us. Focus on your game or focus on your chill. We ain't got no business asking for your time when you're going for a legit professional title.
Honestly coach Neiksans is a really entertaining commentator, I would love if Levy split his channel content with coach's recaps.
That's not gonna happen. Levy is not putting 100% into the GM journey. He's trying hard but spending lots of time merchandising this, for a reason. Literally said last video that he doesn't have time to memorize openings. Levy cares about money more than the GM title.
I think he already is doing that as far as content goes. The recaps are his way of analyzing the game as well, often recorded in one go, so he doesn't lose much with it. However, he could take a more lenient schedule right before tournaments to make sure he can prepare well
This needs to be a higher comment. Let coach make your recaps for you on your channel (he did a great job) during the tournament. If you’re going to get it, you need to focus on it and request help from your team.
This is just a set-up for Levy’s return to his return to professional chess. A double return. Bro is playing chess with the You Tube algorithm now too💀

I'm a blackbelt in brazilian jiu jitsu. Often times when I've had periods of a lot of learning, e.g. new neaurons are being connected, I often tend to do and feel a lot worse. The reason being two-fold: 1. I try new things that I haven't quite mastered yet, 2. I understand more, so I have new standards for my sparring, and that changes my behaviour.
In short, often times before leveling up I suck a lot. Could be a helpfull heuristic, maybe.
I find that this is true with pretty much anything at a high level
@@DanseAndreas I'm a 4 stripe white belt and I feel this. Good to know it happens at all levels. I often have a really good period where I feel so technically competent. Then I learn a new technique or fundamental and my brain is firing constantly during rolls.
Just a possible thought but doesn't seem like an accident that your worst tournaments are home tournaments in the same way that some office workers struggle to work from home. Traveling to focus solely on the tournament at hand may have contributed to your nice performances and thought clarity in other events.

i had a coach who told me when competing, errors are due to either speed (trying to do something fast), insufficient training (need to work on technique) or emotional state (can be from not enough sleep, being anxious or nervous, outside world distractions - anything that keeps you from focusing on what’s in front of you).
doesn’t look like you were rushing, you probably know as much, if not more about chess than your opponents so, i recommend figuring out why you felt the way you did during play and work on keeping from feeling that way.
one of my favourite things about competing was when i was in the zone. everything slowed down and i could see everything that was going to happen. didn’t know how i got into the zone but i could feel it when it was happening. and warming up was super important. also, being a little hungry helped. maybe there is something similar you can do when you compete?
also, you are awesome and i know you’ll do great at your next tournament!
As someone with "just" 2100 Elo I can say that smth like this has happened to me very often. Whenever I have a good tournament and then lose the first round in my next one, I perform incredibly bad. Because after a good tournament it feels like I'm undefeatable, I'm in great shape and nothing can ever stop me. And then losing the first round kinda flips a Switch, almost like a pushback into reality. Going from "Damn, I'm at my peak performance" to "Damn, I'm actually defeatable" in just a few hours is a psychological and emotional rollercoaster that is very hard to handle. Because in the next few games I always remember the first round and the fact that I lost and that leads to self-doubts. Am I evaluating this correctly, am I good enough for my opponent, am I even worth 2100, these are all questions that subconsciously appear in my head and they also influence my moves. It's like playing with fear but without even realizing it. And looking at the development of your Tournament, smth similar might have happened here. Good thing is that this is always gone is my next tournament because with enough time, this emotional state of subconscious inner fear can and will reset. So keep going Levy, you got this!
Overconfidence to Underconfidence in a matter of hours, damn that's tough, hopefully Levy can find the balance of confidence.

Good luck in your chess career man

@user-en1js8kt2t, bad conclusion. The guy won against other players at 2400+ ELO, as said on the 4th minute. Rating doesn't equate to performance.
@user-en1js8kt2tI love levys videos, and he has made chess so amazing, but I agree, and am starting to have a dislike of him always downing his viewers sometimes. I am sure he means it more to the haters, but like in this video he’s like but i’m 2,000 elo higher than all of you. He always does little slick comments like that on his videos. And then when you look at his losses, just makes you wonder in a sense. He’s awesome and love his vids, but not a fan of that part as well.
The GM title means something because it's soooooooooo hard to get. Take a break, attack it again. The attempt alone is worthy of respect.
@user-en1js8kt2t 🤡
Making the amount of content Levy does, including Patreon etc., is a job in itself, obviously. Plus he's in a relationship, has a dog, etc, etc. Getting to GM is harder than getting a PhD judging by the numbers of people who have achieved it and most do it much younger when a) their brains are more plastic; b) they have fewer distractions/responsibilities; c) they're not documenting all their successes/failures (particularly failures) publicly. This is a heavy load--he's already shown he's susceptible to fear of failure in using that app to hide the status of his opponents in online chess, and he's made the stakes higher still by monetizing the whole enterprise. Maybe back off the day-to-day updates, though that's going to be difficult to achieve given how everyone in the chess world knows who he is and will be paying attention. Bit of a Catch 22.
@user-en1js8kt2t, Says a douche of 500 elo and earns nothing.
@user-en1js8kt2t If it was a good rhetorical question you wouldn't have to point it out. Obviously, there are plenty of things in life that are worth pursuing that don't "pay the bills".
@user-en1js8kt2t Is being a great painter, sculptor or playwright harder than getting a PhD? It's a waste of time, because only the best artists make a living at it.

Hey Gotham! I'm sorry you had a rough tournament. Your tournament recaps are my favorite series on this platform because getting to hear your honest thoughts on the games is really rewarding. We're all routing for you! From what you've said about these games, it sounds like you struggle to trust your own evaluations after some bad games, and you start to tilt. I wondered if you might benefit from speaking with a sports psychologist. They focus on improving your athletic performance by giving you tools to fight tilting.
You got a lot going on Levy. From someone subbed to you since you had under 200k subs, I can only say you should keep your coach on. Arturs seems like a great guy and probably is just what you need. His level headedness and temperament is demonstrated in the recaps and hopefully can rub off on you a bit. Good luck, you still rocking it.
You are correct- it is burnout. The issue is what are you going to do to reduce the workload. Either the streaming or the OTB prep has to go. Doing both is causing the exhaustion and burnout.
3 Tournaments and it's burnout??? lol lol lol
@@penknight8532 No , it is the combination of streaming and OTB preparation. Hikaru can do it but he has already achieved the GM norm.
@@penknight8532 you know chess players don't just wake up, play a tournament and come back, right? They spend several hours a day on prep. Not to mention that Levy basically has a full time job outside of that with content creation and chessly. Burnout is very plausible here.

His back of head movements in the mirror are cracking me up, I don't know why 🤣
Lol I had a similar thought I keep thinking, "So this is what the back of Levy's head looks like" 🤔
It is interesting that in almost all these games, Levy has several moments where he is basically winning, and then he randomly throws it away for seemingly no reason. The fundamentals are there. His mind was just in knots for some reason, which made him consistently make the wrong decisions at critical points.
Not throwing it away is the most fundamental part of high level chess because one mistake and you destroy the match for yourself. It's like a golfer with a poor short game who three putts every time, if you can't stop that you will never improve. If Levy can't fix that, he won't get to GM legitimately (ie without those dodgy eastern european norm seeker tournaments).
Distracted by doing many things. He could become GM but that has to be the only thing that he does. Screw youtube, or chessly or whatnot.
@@markomak1 He simply cannot destroy his higher purpose for a human-made badge.
He has a problem with knowing when you trust his intuition and to accept the consequences. More than 1 of hans neimans coaches has said that his calculation is actually not great for a grandmaster. But that he has a really strong intuition and is extremely stubborn with it. Intuition is very important at a high level. At every point during this tournament where levy threw away an advantage he had just spent 20 minutes thinking and going against his intuition.
That is exactly what used to happen to him before. It is called Lack of confidence. He doesn't trust his feelings because he is not confident on himself, so he chooses the alternative option. You can train that too
Hey, it could be worse. I just went from 420 to 232 in a week. And I was really trying. Like ... I learned openings. I tried to think carefully before I moved. And I still got my ass kicked by every single clueless player. Literally the only games I won were where people abandoned the game without moving. I may have undiagnosed brain damage.
This does not feel good.
@@redcuillin I’m nearing 2100 rapid and every single time I learn a new opening, use new ideas and mating nets to incorporate into games, or switch from d4 to e4 - I lose rating.
You can see in my long term rating graphs exactly where I’m trying new things - there’s a steep decline a few days after I really begin using them. Usually it’s 50 points at a time - every now and again it’s 200.
You’re always going to lose rating once you experiment - that’s the price of learning. You will lose loads and loads before you win. Applying new ideas, getting into thinking patterns/mindsets that you didn’t even consider before, losing to weaknesses you have never seen- they all lead to long term results!!
It’s really easy to see the dip and become demotivated - but I’ll let you in on a secret! After each steep decline, there’s also a distinct period where the rating begins to skyrocket, where the learning finally pays back, you recover from any lost rating and reach higher peaks than before. :)
Keep playing and thinking and learning.
It will pay off!!
Just my suggestion, might be wrong: try playing multiple slow daily games, use the explore function to find the move you think it's the best, once the game is over run the free review turning the suggestions off, so it will force you to retry the moves that are mistakes.
This, plus never skipping the free daily puzzles, might get some result. I improved with that.
I have been playing with a friend and we were about the same level (~700 elo) and i not only gained elo but he doesn't want to play with me anymore because i destroy him in 10 minutes rapid now.
(i absolutely suck at bullet tho, and i can't get better at it)
I did this by playing ~150 games, he played ~600 in a 3 months timespan.
I still suck at chess but i found it quite useful to improve as a casual lazy player without stressing myself too much over it.

Truth is, your growth isnt always indicated in a linear fashion. You can learn new concepts, but be tested on different ones in games. Doesnt mean you arent making progress
Whenever I have a leap in understanding of the game I win a bunch but then shortly hit a losing streak before integrating that new knowledge with everything I already learned. It's definitely not linear. 👍
Exactly! Integrating new methods and fighting our weaknesses often requires us to get worse before skyrocketing to a new, higher level. And the better you are at something the longer this process/cycle takes

7:25. I had to learn this on my own. I’d notice all the extra time on my clock after I lost a game. Then I’d look at my mistakes and think… those mistakes never should have occurred. Nothing complicated was required. Higher level chess was not required. I just didn’t take the time to slow down and think when it was appropriate to do so.
I think what you've gone through over the last four tournaments is incredibly instructive. When I coached a high school team, we often played several pre-season tournaments (five games in a weekend) to sharply identify our weaknesses and strengths so that we could make adjustments in our practice/training to better prepare for the real season ahead. Think of your successes and struggles along these same lines.
Once in my life I averaged 16 working hours a day, for around 2 months. It was absolutely brutal, and it took me months to truly recover. I imagine your situation is very similar with all you're doing. Good rest and the best of luck for you and your many careers.
cool story bro
Don’t get too deep off into your head, Levy!!! At the end of the day, it’s still just chess, no more and no less.
A very obscure football movie in 2000 with Keanu Reeves called The Replacements mentions the concept of Quicksand and something that he fears. It's the idea that you think things are going fine and then one thing goes wrong. Then another. Then another. The harder you fight back the further you sink, until you can't move, you can't breathe, and you feel like you are in over your head, like quicksand.
The point though is that trying to fight back, while the logical move is not necessarily the best move. The other point is to not beat yourself up if that is what happened, but to learn other ways to safely get out of the quicksand the next time you find yourself in some in the future.
I personally wouldn't spend too much time on the "why" unless you determine the "why" pretty quickly. I've spent far too much time on the "why" only to get more progress once I just accepted that the there are solutions to my problems where the "why" doesn't matter. It's like a ridiculous best move from Stockfish that no one would play because of how deep it goes in the moves and leads to a very slight edge after some unintuitive lines over the much more obvious move that you found in less than a minute. Both are solutions where one is slightly better according to the computer, but both work so why spend the additional time going over the stockfish lines when there is just as good of a solution that's not nearly as complicated?
Well said.
"Yo quicksand's a scary mother man!"
I wouldn't call the replacements an obscure film

You started very motivitated in this journey and yout thought process was reasonable. You told us how you worked on your skills and you have been self aware of what your problems (psychologically) have been over the board in the past and where you want to improve. After a promising start, you relapsed in these behaviours and reflected, that this might have to do with you not spending enough time on training, instead focussing on TH-cam and your online career. As a fan I could completely understand this and wished you best luck...
When you announced your comeback, I was pretty sceptical. I remembered your mental state from your last try and didn't think much has changed. So I was surprised but absolutely happy when you indeed had so promising performances in your first three tournaments after the last comeback.
However seeing this tournament and your announcement now, I just don't really see a difference to your previous try. You still try to go for everything at once (TH-cam, chessly, competitive chess and not to forget: having a social life being a husband etc.). Not a SINGLE person on earth could balance all that and this is exactly what you gave us as a reason to stop competitive play in the first place...
You know best and I don't wanna try to lecture you, just wanna give an outside perspective. Sometimes it helps. I dont think this difficult goal is achievable without major sacrifices on these mentioned areas of your life.
I personally hope you just decide in what makes you happy. Just know there is a fanbase trying to support you and wishing you the best! ❤
Absolutely agree. When I saw the “I’m taking the break”, I thought it was from creating content. I was shocked to see it was for the Road to GM journey.
Take your time, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Trust me, you will get there.
Stay up king! ❤ You do so much for us. We will be here when you get GM! Take it easy.
Hey Levy obviously this kind of obstacle’s are expected in road to achieving the GM title and losses in tournament games means opportunities for you to learn as you either win or learn in chess. And dont thinl about the rating loss in the tournament just like you tell to us it is just pixels on screen. Most important thing is how good is your chess and when your chess is good enough your rating will follow. Obviously you know your mind, your body better than anyone else just take as much break as you need and come back stronger.
As someone who published 2-3 18 minute (excluding making my own graphics and excluding editing) videos a day (not chess and not professionally) I am pretty convinced your diagnosis of burnout is on the money.
I stopped in time and now relish my added 2 hours of daily freedom.
Bite?
I kinda feel like Levy could stand to work with some sort of sports therapist. Obviously not in his head but to me it looks like he has the skill needed but doesn’t perform to his ability in tournaments due to mental blocks and nerves. I wonder if there’s a sports therapist that could help him.
How would a 1200 like you know he has the skill? You are not even close to having the ability to evaluate that
@@fangiscool1 Meanwhile you are good only in trash talking
Rest well and enjoy the SCC! 💥
Bro didn't have to insult us at 15:48 Damn. What did we do?
i love Levy, buy yea all those comments he makes like that, are starting to rub me the wrong way, like yea he’s right and I honestly don’t care if I suck lol. But like what’s the point of them constantly. Especially when he keeps failing at the tournaments. Many of us will still support him, but why make tool comments lmao
@@christophermendoza6936 he's only half joking. A bit of passive aggressive venting. I really like Levy, wish him all the best always but he needs to do a bit of self evaluation and realize an audience will only take so much of the punching down. We're not the ones posting content for all to see.
Its just his character and i love him for that
Other youtubers
I normally just skip the outro
But him?
I stay till the last second to hear that " get out of here"
But then again
Its my own opinion that peeps should be real and their real thoughts r on the harsh side most of the time
@@user-fu69times that's not what I was referring to. I like him and my post was just pointing out that one time stamp lol
@@GoonerVen i got it
But he makes those comments pretty often if u have watched the other vids
Oh well
There r all kinds of fan
I just hope u r one who is looking forward to see GM Levy Rozman
Have a nice day
You got this!
Give me break of that Kit-Kat bar, I'll join you.....
Halfway through your book. Your videos and book bring a new level of excitement to the game.
Rest well, hugs and hopes from Brazil. ❤
Bro has to be grand mother for the chess community.

Levy, I really loved these recaps. Thanks for being so open and honest with us!
Sending much love from Montreal, been a fan for a while. I'm happy you're listening to yourself right now. Bon succès mon ami!!

Levy talking about how underated a 50 year old is.. kinda sounds like hard cope.
15:48 Bruh, Levy actually just called us 400 rated 😂
Nice job! Hang in there, can't wait for next tournament.
can't wait for gotham to take another L home 😊
Dude tried go for GM first time, lost a bunch of games and took a break. Now he's writing 'GM' on all his video titles, losing a bunch of games again and is taking another break. Bruh.
Why are you 8 minutes late to begin with? Are you acting like you are Magnus? That might be the first problem. You want to become a GM and then you are arrogantly coming 8 minutes late. Good luck
Always good to take care of the mental. The journey is the fun part; keep at it and you’ll get there! Appreciate your efforts and your content; one of my favorite things to watch.
That final game reminds me of the final round of a tournament where my opponent who was an IM had blundered the exchange out of the opening. It was -8 for me at some point. He asked me a draw. I declined. Suddenly i was losing.
Levy, thank you for being so open in your pursuit and honest in your reviews. I wish you the best during your time off training. We would love to see some of the prep/practice games between you and Arturs. Obviously, the prep between you and Arturs shouldn't be completely open but if there's any part of it that could be recorded, that would be a cool behind the scenes peek.
Levy's performance swings between 2100 and 2500
My performance swings between 600 and 1000
We have so much in common!!!
Hang in there - you got this.
A story from my past: I was a competitive powerlifter and. Had hit a plateau in my bench press. I knew I was over trained and stale. So decided that I would spend a month not bench pressing. I worked hard with other similar exercises but didn't bench. I figured that it would be a step back that would allow forward progress afterward. At the end of the month I tested myself in the bench and blew away my former best.
My advice- continue to work hard but make a change in pace for a bit. Do stuff you don't normally do. You will strengthen weaknesses while also recharging your batteries.
Good luck.
You got this.
Really admire your dedication to chess. Taking a break sounds like a good idea. Thanks for sharing your journey to GM! Keep positive!
This is why you see GMs withdraw early from tournaments. You've got this Levy.
"Oh My WIfe Woke Up... You guys are gonna wait while I write her a message"👍👍
You'll get there Levy. I do agree with what your coach said on stream though, which was basically along the lines that you're burning the candle at both ends with all the hard work you're doing on the content creation side in addition to making this big push toward becoming a GM.
Ton of support for you! Keep pushing and get into the right frame of mind. GM is within reach.
Thank you for this video Levy, I also often feel like I’ve plateaued in my chess journey and that my efforts are going to waste, but seeing someone else go through the same struggles is comforting. I appreciate your authenticity and willingness to show vulnerability.
A title that isn’t clickbait. That means it’s serious. You got this Levy, rest up and return to your return!
All the best for your future
True progress is slow and steady and often times we get better even through results that weren’t what we expected. You have made great strides! Regroup, make a plan and attack it! Rooting for you always brotha!
Honestly, a break will be very good for you. Your comeback story is inspiring me to come back to competitive chess as well. I last played competitively back in 2012, highest rating was around 1920, then dropped off. Got frustrated with my inconsistencies because there was a time where I absolutely destroyed FM Pedram Atoufi (don’t know his title these days), and then would play low quality games vs much lower rated opponents. I eventually got too frustrated and quit competitive chess. Seeing your drive now is inspiring me again. I’m 33 years old now and want to see if it’s even possible for me to aim for a title. Congrats on all of your accomplishments. I know that tournament was rough for you, chess is a brutal game sometimes. Enjoy your much needed rest and get that training in.
Thanks for bringing us these recaps and insights Levy. Take a break and you'll bounce back stronger. Looking forward to SCC and your match vs Pia
