Growing up with Asperger’s Syndrome was a nightmare for me. I was bullied relentlessly. I had no one to guide me or help me figure things out. My parents would constantly tell me how my brain is wired wrong and how I can’t do anything. I’m 33 years old and I struggle with past trauma to this day.

I have Aspergers too and one of the stereotypes I hate is that we have no empathy. This kid showed more empathy than most kids could even comprehend at his age. We have empathy just like most people do, in fact we actually tend to have more because we understand how it feels to be left out or ostracized.
I have Asperger's and absolutely love helping homeless people and animals, and consistently do whenever I'm out. Empathy is big in my life

My son is 150% an Empath. I can see him physically feel other people's pain, sadness, and happiness in his heart by his facial expressions and mannerisms. That's narcissists that have no empathy. That and sociapaths
Maybe it's not 100% in everybody but maybe it's high ratio for Asperger's? I really don't know I'm just starting to learn about it because my friend is raising her grandchild who is so disobedient and heartless. He's 12 and his mother just had enough so his grandmother went and got him out of an institution thinking maybe she could help him but he's really aggressive and dangerous. I mean there's got to be different degrees of symptoms right? And yes that was a question cuz I really don't know. I'm trying to figure out how to respond to this child bx he really pushes all your buttons. I just found out today that was possibly what is happening with him and I'm trying to understand it.

My first primary school was a living hell at one point, it wasn't suited for my ADHD and autism, and I was also bullied badly, so I can understand him very well.

burhan ghney At age 3 I was diagnosed with Aspergers, my life has been a mess because of it I never had real friends engaged in any other relationship because of my social awkwardness I have always been an loner and as today as an sophomore in high school all the kids make fun of me and hate on me when ever I try to relate to them, I also have an after school job at Burger King but it’s very common that I make big mistakes which causes the managers and coworkers to judge and get angry at me but I do not get into an emotional outburst when so, I wish i could be like all the normal kids in school I get an regular education but I always make honor roll in school I tried my hardest to get along with people and become friends with others but it always results as them making up rumors and making fun of me when all I’m trying to go is be nice

As a recently diagnosed adult with Asperger and ADHD, I feel happy that this kid got a diagnosis and support from a young age. I had to live my childhood and early adulthood without knowing that there was a diagnosis for how I feel and how I perceive things and why are they different from other people. I still manage to have a successful life, have a beautiful wife and son, so I think I'm lucky. But going through teenage and early adulthood times feeling detached from society and having no support or understanding, was very hard and kinda destroyed what should have been the best times of my life.
I’m 22 now and got diagnosed at 21. Let me just say that after the diagnosis, going back over my childhood makes a lot more sense. I’m really happy for the kids getting diagnosed early, living like this undiagnosed is really hard. The kid said “they know I’m different but they don’t know WHY” and that’s exactly how it was for me. Again, I’m so glad that this kid is living to the fullest!
Nah, it's a blessing to be innately inoculated against collectivism. The only people who think the teen years are the best times are losers that peaked. Now, adhd, that one can really cut both ways. I am beyond useless without coffee.

OMG. What a lovely child. As far as "overcoming" or "conquering" autism - yeah, not so much. ;) Living with, yes. It's a part of the person's life. Actually, it's a part of the person. I'm possibly a little oversensitive and I understand that people may look at this as a great tragedy to be "overcome", but I feel it's erroneous. Mom of two kids on the autism spectrum.

THANK YOU! It's not an illness! Our brains are different, but we are not sick. People on the spectrum do have advantages, it's just that society is not designed with us in mind. Sorry, I believe it could be perceived as weird that I'm responding to a 7 year old comment, sometimes people seem to be very disturbed by that, but this is a sentiment that I appreciate very much, I had to reinforce it. This is wonderful! I can relate to all which was said, since I have Asperger's too. I just published a book at age 23 about it too, called "Juggling the Issues: Living with Asperger's Syndrome". It's a royalty-published book (not self-published), over 200 pages, and articulates my firsthand experience with autism/asperger's. Already, it's blessed so many people and it just came out. :)

I have asperger and my life is a complete torture. Everything is sooooooo overwhelming people think i'm lazy but everything takes 100000x more energy to do then everyone else. I am completely ackward socially and its a complete pain... Honestly I don't know what to do now

I am socially awkward, not only that I just went through severe autistic burnout and lost all executive function just to open my mouth and talk took monumental effort. I am currently bedridden trying to reach out to other aspies to hear their experiences with the syndrome.

This society labels everyone who stand out and differently wired. I belong to the “normal”cy, maybe, but I find it sick that people who are wired for innovation or creativity and mostly introverted are labeled as not normal or sick. Why don’t we just take them as extraordinarily talented in different areas of life? Like maths, science whatever. And why don’t we take other people as talented in social skills or such? Why does everyone need to fit into a very small box which is man made anyways? We are all interconnected and we need each other. Everyone is unique and has their place in the magnificent earth. Let’s all get out of the matrix and love each other.

I don't see Aspergers as a hindrance. I think we are ahead of NT society.
There is no such thing as an 'NT society', nor is there Aspergers society. And Aspergers is not Autism, the two were lumped into together by an autism specialist Lorna Wing in 1981 in order to broaden Autism as a spectrum rather than merely just a singular disorder. Aspergers is just a syndrome, of personality traits that co-exist whereas autism is a full on brain damage disorder to varying degrees.

I have this. He reminds me of me in many ways when I was a kid.
I dont know if I have Aspergers or not but when I was in middle school I was alone and lonely at school, I was always verbally bullied. I never want to take part in class recitation cause Im afraid that they will make fun of me. I cant read between the lines, I dont know if someone is sarcastic or not. When Im alone at school I just focus myself on drawing things, making comics because I have so much I have in my mind. I have a talent in the arts and now Im a graphic designer and just works at home. Sometimes I think to myself, how does it feels like to be person whos outgoing, extrovert and has many friends. I want to have many friends but the difficulties in communication made it hard to do so.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers around the time I was in kindergarten. Now, I'm getting ready to be a senior. Here's the thing though. I struggle more with the social stuff and am very confused about myself. I have been into technology my whole life, but I don't know if that's something I want to pursue a career in. If I did, I would like to just make one thing that makes me rich or just take over some technology company. I am also passionate about art, but my drawing skills aren't very good. It is something I would really like to pursue though. My mom wants me to be an engineer though. I don't want to be an engineer. I am really messed up socially though. I am pretty much incapable of trying to make friends. Then the people who try to be friends with me I don't really want to be friends with. I am not one to really like my peers for some reason. I was held back in pre k for my bad social skills, but I am glad I was because I hate the people where I'm supposed to be even more. I really like the younger people more, but they don't want to be my friend because I'm too old. I have even gone to the point of questioning my own gender since I feel like I would get along better socially with girls. I have tried to push myself socially to be friends with my peers, but I don't really enjoy it all that much. I hate myself so much. I just feel lonely. I don't know what's wrong with me to be honest. I have even gone as far as to question if my Aspergers has evolved into something else. I don't 100% qualify on the online Aspergers tests when I take them to the best of my ability.

It makes a difference when you know what's going on. For many, we're not given the benefit of knowing why things aren't working for us that work for pretty much everybody else. At this point, the AS diagnosis is gone, and the barriers to getting proper acknowledgement and support are higher than they were. A bunch of the folks that had AS diagnoses under the previous criteria got grandfathered in, but those with the same traits and the same support needs now are likely to get nothing at all. It's a messed up system where you need a diagnosis for any official support, but the process of getting it is kafkaesque in complexity and rather expensive.
I've been to therapists social interaction therapies and numerous psychologists diagnosed with absolutely nothing and way more messed up than this kid.
same here but it also makes me very intelligent in certain places and give me like amazing skills but not very useful i have a very strong long term memory but my short term sucks always my head runs also insane fast the depression and axiety i hate the most but that also is a strong benefit
i always fixed computer problems sometimes i think long other times short but i always found fixed and understood the problem till it worked normal again also iam very good in flight simulators like dcs i can perfectly fly speed heading and altitute and from my good long term memory i know step by step to do without thinking and give me amazing visual power but bad verbal interpatition and auditory disorder

My son is a GT student he is on medication for anxiety and adhd but he does not wants to cut his hair or wear diffrent shoes or backpack when his honor society awards ceremony he was the only one in school uniform all were in sundays best attire when someone comes visit us at home goes to his room he takes a long time to feel comfortable with teacher and classmates … today i took him to his sicologist and he is going to be evaluated for aspergers 😕

It’s really weird calling this child different.. he seems completely normal.
Sam mentioned how "they know I'm different; they just don't know what makes me different" in this video. Asperger's Syndrome is a hidden disability that's not obvious on the surface like being blind, being deaf, being in a wheelchair, etc. When a person has a hidden disability, you often can't tell they have a disability when you first meet them. When people get to know someone very well that has a hidden disability, they very likely notice their disability symptoms but probably won't think they're the way they are due to a disability. Sam's classmates that are aware of his differences probably don't think he's the way he is due to a disability kind of like with Sheldon Cooper. The Big Bang Theory never talks about Sheldon being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, but when you watch many episodes of The Big Bang Theory and are familiar and understand Asperger's Syndrome very well, it becomes very obvious that Sheldon has Asperger's Syndrome since Sheldon is a textbook case of Asperger's Syndrome. Sheldon's friends and coworkers know that he's different somehow, but Sheldon's friends and coworkers don't know the reasons why he's different, don't know that Sheldon is the way he is because of Asperger's Syndrome, don't know that Sheldon is the way he is because of a disability, etc.

As someone who has Asperger’s (Now known as High functioning Autism) and was diagnosed at 10. Being 10 and not socially aware there was a autism awareness presentation at my school a few days after, I literally did something super stupid a announced to the whole class, “Did you know I was just diagnosed with Autism.” Yea you can imagine how classmates reacted in 5th grade. For the rest of the year I was treated like an infant and overly nice, or they would mention like there friend of a friend of a friend of a friends 5th cousin has autism and is 20 and still plays with Thomas the tank engine toys and can’t speak or something like that. I moved towns with a fresh start, Middle school. Which was even worse, because no one knew I had it people would always say I’m acting SPED (I HATE THAT WORD). I would be bullied too, one time it got so bad that this kid went under my stall in the bathroom and said,” I know your in their Connor” and just started moaning and asked if I was top or bottom. I’m in high school now and so far it’s been ok but I guess I’ll see
Self-awareness is key
I always pay attention at my good characteristics, better than the worse. I don't ignore that I'm fallen and have flaws, I just try to foccus on my talents
I have or was believed to have Asperger’s syndrome because I learned to read at three. I also have ARFID, a rare eating disorder. I have to live with both and I hate ARFID so much
The good thing that comes out of Asperger's Syndrome is that you can become good at something and use those abilities in a good way. I got perfect pitch as a kid, and could play piano by ear, and in recent years I have enjoyed Rock & Roll Fantasy Camps to play keyboard parts with the real performers of songs I like. I also got interested in computer programming as a kid, and now I'm going to put out a cool mobile app that is going to make me rich.
Since a kid, I always wanted to know how the world works on a scientific scale and of how the mind works and things that are beyond comprehension.
My son was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in first grade. He is now a doctor and is very successful. Not everyone who is diagnosed will be as successful, but there is hope.
My friend has Aspergers and he has it really bad though. He knocks on my door everyday and walks in my house without permission and yells for me to come play with him and he is below average and he would not speak like this kid he would speak and make weird sounds and scrunch his face and he also hugs me for no reason sometimes and I️ have no idea. So yeah...

This is a compliment to Asperger's, look at him, intelligent, attractive and pleasant. I too have Asperger's, my 4 favourite subjects are Science, Maths, History and Politics. He should be proud to be "abnormal" it means he's unique and interesting, he's also very intelligent! I have a whole gang of friends now. I too have been labelled a trouble maker, simply for having a different sense of humour to everyone else, but according to phycologists having a darker sense of humour is a sing of intelligence too, the darker the better!!!! I'm moderately gifted and I want to do well in life, people always complain that I'm silly and immature for my age and act like a child, but when the Hell have you seen me come home in a police car drunk as a skunk or self harming, I'll tell you, NEVER!!!! There are things people who are considered normal do that I just find mystifying, yet I'm the one labelled as different!!!! In fact, I'M PROUD to be different, at least I make up my own mind and form my own likes and interests rather than going along with everybody else like a mindless sheep!
@Fatima Mustapha mala I too had anger problems in my youth, most of it was because I was in the wrong environment and being treated like I was stupid. All I wanted from the age of 13 was to go to a mainstream school. Instead I've been to horrible bizarre and obscure places instead. I don't consider myself to have any real behavioural issues, I just like to do things my way and sometimes that conflicts on what other people consider "normal." I tend to make up my own mind about things rather then follow what everyone else is conditioned to think and sometimes this can cause conflict in my life, like the time I went to a vegetarian/ vegan/ organic college. Their food was frigging terrible and the other "students" were rough, nasty stupid and horrible. I don't let people dictate to me what I can and can't do, and when they do it always ends in disaster! I went to a school where there was a boy who liked poo and there was another thug who was into horses, they were a strange bunch of nasty kids! I'm into army figure and other people are always telling me I should grow up. It's just my thing. Like I said in my previous comment, there are plenty of things normal people do that I just don't understand. Such as getting wasted on alcohol. Yeah, I enjoy a nice beer as much as the next guy, but I don't go silly on it and drink gargantuan of alcohol I can't afford to consume! Other people cry at football games or get into silly groups like the creationists or other cults. I just don't understand half the worlds population and I tend to get on better with children, not always gone down very well I'm afraid! ) :

I also have Asperger's, and I am much more old school. Sure I loved science, in fact it was my favorite class, but I'd rather spend my days looking for and building simple hot rods like they did when my grandpa was young. I also have Septo Optic Dysplasia, which has left me with seeing from my left eye only, but even with those of what people may call "Challenges", I've been able to find myself out on the go kart track. I've done most of the bodywork on my teacher's '53 Chevy, I was on the wrestling team, played trombone, and I can draw hot rods in about 15 minutes tops. I've even gone as far as to drive 3 different types of quads, 2 different trucks, and do it all without crashing or going too fast. The point is that if our society is to keep labeling us and doubting us based on fear, our lives won't hold that much significance, and that combined energy and ableism will continue to deplete our self esteem until there's none left. However, things would be different if people worldwide could understand this. People that have disabilities simply don't see themselves as disabled. In fact we believe we're just like the average Joe, just not as boring. If someone with Asperger's comes to you and wants to show you what they can do, all you need to do is just say yes. People say no way too much nowadays. I've been around the block. I've seen some stuff. In fact, I've been here for almost 25 years. I think one saying says it all about people like sam and I. Because it requires support in all cases. There are no 0 support needs aspies, or autistic folks in general. It means needing an alternate way of doing most things so as to manage the burnout and fatigue.There's a spiky profile to it where one can be brilliant in some areas, but then fail miserably do basic things without putting some sort of structure in place that regular folks wouldn't need.
As an adult man diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, I'd like to say that one doesn't "overcome" a neurological condition. You just learn to live with it.

Asperger's Syndome, it's a dirty term used to define highly intelligent people.
This is false. Aspergers can be really just average intelligence. I am very average intelligence and I have aspergers syndrome. And my oldest sister who is autistic is slower than average. That is why there is a push by the autism community when someone who has autism is unusually intelligent because its actually rare. Autism can be associated with mental retardation in the case of many that I know.

Nyah Notrealname The doctor I went, told me that I was Asperger or just very intelligent. That I seem to have Asperger´s due my intelligence, or that, I totally have it. It was so hard that we went nowhere. Inconclusive I could say... I just think that very intellingent people are more propense to look like an Asperger´s (if they´re not)
Nyah Notrealname not entirly, if at all rly, im aspergers and i love the term, it gives me a sense of foundation and identitiy where other would just say "weird" or "strange" or "freak". also, i was tested twice for it, and both of the dr.'s had very high oppinions of aspergers and ppl with it. but just to prove it a bit more, i dont take my oppinion on aspergers from them and what they say, but fro myself and how i feel about it, and how it affects me, it can be a very good term, as is in my case.
I hope he does, someday. I was diagmosed with it, too, and am in the IT field. I can relate.

No, you want to have this 'disorder' so that you can, like many other people, feel special about yourself, unique and rare. Incidentally, Aspergers (when it actually technically existed) before it was removed in 2012 after it's short 17 year history as a separate condition, was never a 'disorder' unlike autism. Aspergers was only ever a 'syndrome' which just means personality traits that co-exist together, therefore, making it neurological, meaning that it is no more significant or different from the MBTI types why which is correlated by it. Everybody in the world has an MBTI type whether they are aware of it or not, some types far rarer than others. You have to go to the Humanmetrics site to find out your own type before you can research it.

I have the syndrome im 10 i think i was diagnosed whit it 5 years ago and i feel horrible because i reach my boiling point when it goes to far when im that far i start hitting the couch and beat the anger out of me but i mostly beat my bed and get rid of it

A part of me doesn't like things like this because they make it sound like Asperger's is a crippling disorder or something. I have Asperger's and from personal experience the best way I can describe it is a communication error, I often have troubleunderstanding emotions like I have trouble telling if someone's being sarcastic or genuinely serious. basically it makes your mind very literal analytical you have trouble understanding social cues such as sarcasm jokes and even affection.it's not that we are unable to feel emotions or are crippled in emotions it's just that we have trouble expressing it like putting our feelings into words or how to act apon them. However it is not impossible for people with Asperger's to learn how tounderstand emotions it's just that rather than learning it naturally we have to be explicitly told or taught how. when I was younger I felt like everybody was always bullying me but that's because I didn't understand jokes now that I'm older I completely understand jokes and such not because my Asperger's lessened or was cured but by learning it as a skill rather than a natural ability.

Yes, the reality is more complicated. It is typically crippling in some regards, and it can be a great benefit in others. There's a reason why folks often describe the condition as having a spiky profile.
I may have Asperger's Syndrome. The problem is that I focus on certain things, so school is difficult because you have to deal with so many different kinds of subject matter, and a lot of stuff doesn't make sense. Also, when I was younger, I would be obsessed with certain things and talk about those things with anyone and everyone, and that can get you in trouble. In my adult life, I have gotten in trouble and shunned by making fun of things people say or do that catch my fancy. However, now that I am grown up, I can understand a lot more about the world around me because I have points of reference to help understand more types of subject matter. As far as making fun of things that catch my fancy, I have learned that it is only permissible in entertainment contexts. I especially am fond of music, and if I belt out lyrics to a song I like to the performer of that song, it's cool, but I once made fun of the way a Rabbi delivered a prayer in a service at temple and I got banned from the temple.

I've worked at autistic Centers Sam is highly intelligent and has fast processing speed he is one of the most immensely fortunate cases that he has high iq some of the kids were really struggling forming concepts let alone making friends. He can go places in life he may come off socially akward but there are a-lot of people with aspergers he can be friends with ho understand where he is coming from. He is a very high functioning form of autism aspergers.
