  • Even though working on ships is contract work, some people seek to have a full career onboard. This, though, is where the balance of ship life and real life can get tricky.

    I DJ'd on RCL, 13 years ago, and thought I'd NEVER do that again. But Princess has a ACD-DJ position that is not entry-level, but officer, and I'm intrigued and applying. At 55, I can't change my career, landside, even after getting a degree at 52. Wife is British with property, I've been a renter in the States, so a private room would make things more tolerable than that first contract. Plus wife can come stay with me, at will. I've got lifetime flight privileges from retiring early from an airline ramp.

    I've always wondered: is talking about the RMS Titanic okay for crew members or is it like saying bomb in an airport? Or is it just a tired reference and a sure fire way to let everyone in the vicinity know that you're new to ship life? Is it something commonly referred to during safety training as a 'what not to do'? How many times a day would you hear the word 'Titanic'?

    • @mseanprice
      @mseanprice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      galioth123 It’s not like saying Macbeth in the theater. I would say it’s more of a tired reference and everyone would know you are knew. The Costa Concordia is the recent disaster that most people know about. But you won’t find many moments where talking about a sinking ship would come up. I mean, the ship takes safety super super serious, so if you are acting like an person trying to rile people up by talking about sinking, you may have some people having issues with your behavior. But I never felt it was taboo to talk about stuff.

    • @seanwebb605
      @seanwebb605 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On Celebrity Cruises they had formal nights during the cruise and the photography department would do sittings with the guests dressed in tuxedos and ballgowns. The most popular backdrop on many of the ships was the Titanic staircase. I distinctly remember scheduling and airing Poseidon during one of my first contracts. We had a National Geographic Channel that had a series of movies on finding shipwrecks. I was in Santorini before and shortly after a ship sank. Huge news at the time.

    Home schooling is a BIG THING, so that magician was fine, he probably decided it was easier getting land jobs. Personally, a young person SHOULD go out and do what you did. If I had a chance to go back and do things different, I would have tried the cruise lines. I doubt I would have advanced into maintenance from busboy like I did with hotel work on land.
    Eventually, I ended up in custodial for a school system and got a coveted Day custodial job. My problem was suck up loyality that was required, after a while, I became tired of being everyone's lap dog and was looking at a position as Repair maintenance for the district as far as all the lawn maintenance and floor care. Sadly, they eliminated that position when I was next in line for it. After that I found out I had cancer and after surgery ended up with a chronic pain issue and had to retire.

If you would be so kind, I was hoping to get some advice from your perspective. I am interested in working on a cruise ship as cruise staff or social host and was wondering if you know some good ways to get the necessary job experience (i.e. working in hotels, etc.) and also what to expect in terms of monthly salary and how to apply said positions as an american. Any information you have on the topic would be greatly appreciated!

    • @mseanprice
      @mseanprice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tyler Bailey Tyler Bailey Realistically, you could honestly do that position without much experience. But, anything you can put on your resume that shows being in front of people. Or something that shows personality. I used to work at a summer camp with kids. If you have restaurant experience as a sever. Customer service is the big one. You can probably tweak all the jobs you have on your resume to make it seem like it contributes to the cruise staff work. You just have to show that you can handle yourself in front of people. The salary of that position is like $1800 per month but you would also have commission opportunities like selling bingo and stuff life that. So you would make a little over $2000 per month most likely. As an American, you just go directly to the cruise line websites and apply through their site directly. Definitely change you resume to show how much you can handle be in front of people. And keep applying, to all the companies, it takes a while before you are contacted. Good luck!

    So...I’m trying to understand something, you get the “vacations” when your contract ends...are the vacations paid? You get to have vacations with the money you saved? Vacations, to me imply that you are returning to the ship. Does this happens automatically? Do you have to apply again every time after every contract?

    • @CoffeeWithSean
      @CoffeeWithSean  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keyser Soze Cruise work is contract work. So you are only paid when you’re on the ship. You do not get paid for your “vacation” time. So any money you spend on vacation is what was saved from the previous contract. You do. It apply each contract. On your last day of you contract, you are given your next contract automatically. Including plane tickets, your next ship, and sign on date. If you know you’re no going to do another contract, you have to tell the ship HR department before you sign off and go through a process for quitting.

      Kaleidoscope world there is a passenger gym and a crew gym. The passenger gym is pretty big but you won’t always have access to it and I don’t think on any of my ships there was a bag to hit. I am not trying to sound like they are treated poorly, but the companies are trying to make money. So labor cost being as low as possible is crucial. You can't really have a career on cruise ships. Well not like a career on land if you are from a wealthy western nation. It's contract work and it doesn't pay nearly as well as land based jobs in similar roles. If you become sick or injured and require a long recovery you need a home back on land to return to. And sick benefits. You can't really build your department because you leave after six to eight months. Often you don't return to the same ship. On smaller premium lines you might work shorter contracts and go back to the same ship, but usually you're bouncing ship to ship from contract to contract. The danger is that the systems on the ship become outdated. If you don't keep up with what's happening back on land you lose contacts and you can't stay up to date with the latest technology. The standards of a broadcast department on a cruise ship that operates with a staff of two to five people simply isn't as high as a TV station in a major market in North America or Europe. If you stay on ships too long you really become a ship worker rather than a TV broadcasting media worker who happens to work on ships. After cycling through a few ships you have seen all of the production shows and all of the guest performers. The enrichment lectures become stale and boring. The port and shopping guides can be Weasley and always promise perks while making ludicrous demands. Do it while you're young. Then try to get a job in the home office or back on land with a proper TV station. Try not to come home with and STI.
    Remember that even if you aren't gay on land you can be ship gay. What happens on ships stays on ships.

      Fraz 556 cadets are the low rung. They live like I did. Roommates, crazy hours. Tough into to the life. But after that you basically will be getting your own cabin. However, the crew who work for the deck and maritime side, they're working 1 Hour days, and sometimes that's overnights. Basically a whole different lifestyle than hotel crew members. But you will be able to be in pass anger areas, and you probably have access to officer mess halls. I never had privilege to be in the officer specific mess areas
