you forgot one thing: sentry rockets can be airblasted, meaning level 3's are easier to destroy for a pyro. much, MUCH easier. edit: so uhh this got controversial. Let me explain: I said EASIER, not EASY.
If you are moving a gun, upgrade it to lvl 2 and put another 150-175 metal into it, then move that gear up. That way you can get the best of both worlds. Gun starts fireing quicker and you can finish the upgrade at your discretion with one or two swings
Unless you are dead and they are hitting it outside of its range with a stock shotgun, sure it will take a painful amount of time to destroy it like that and it will do nothing if the engie is alive but atleast it will destroy it at some point if your dead and maybe help their team a little by softening up the sentry gun, but otherwise your correct
I didn't even realize this was something debatable. I always figured highest level = best result. I might start leaving a gun at level 2 more often when on offense or while I'm trying to get a nest up. The extra HP is important when you're fully set up, so I see no point in leaving it at level 2 if you have everything else upgraded, aren't moving, and have 200 metal to spend, but I can see situations where the build speed and extra metal for my teleporter might be more beneficial.
+Kevin (Emayerage) Level 2 is a requirement in my book for any form of nest, but lvl 3 is a wait thing most of the time unless your playing disposable sentry(was more common before gunslinger). I usually get the 3, then ensure dispensers up to at least 2 before worry about lvl 3 gun. Also the size thing, lvl 2 lets it peek over most things so its good for surprise buttsechings folks with odd placements ;).
It's also worth noting that even though the firing speed for the Level 2 and Level 3 sentries are exactly the same, the Level 3 has a noticeable increase in the bullet firing *sound* that it makes, so it can be a bit deceiving. Interesting stuff. Or at least I think so. Hope ya enjoyed. ;)
Question about the larger hitbox: does it matter when: a) Sentries are stationary, since I always imagined that hitbox size matters primarily when dodging, which requires mobility b) The sentry has no "vulnerable" hitboxes, like a head which snipers can exploit
Incog Elbowtross yes and no. its simply allowing a soldier, scout, whatever to more consistently hit it. now becuase its a stationary target, sure, but in the middle of a fight one or two more bullets from a heavy could decide everything.
a scout can do more damage from longer ranges because of the bigger hitbox but, let's be honest, if a scount is close enough to do max damage to a sentry he won't be there for much longer
Hitboxes matter. smaller one requires more skill to damage. and technically the engie is the sentry's weakspot. It's a team based objective game. everyone has a role.
Here's something you didn't know: Half life 2 Episode 2's Antlion Worker has a very advanced aiming system. They predict your movements and fire ahead of you, making a near direct hit everytime. This is the same as the APC's rocket launcher.
It's also worth noting that that the sentry causes knock back with its bullets and because of this the sentry's rockets can land a liiiiiiittle reliably when the opponent is grounded, because now the sentry is pushing them in a *straight* line away meaning the opponent is now moving in the same direction the rockets are traveling, still not reliable, but it wasn't covered in this video because the medic was invincible in the demonstration. Food for thought
Totally wrong, the bullets add a velocity perpendicular to the turret but doesn't modify the other 2 axis velocity so, being pushed back makes it even harder to hit the rockets.
Something that's not often talked about but can make a huge difference is that each level of a sentry increases its turret turn speed as well, which means it can more effectively switch targets and cover multiple directions. A Pyro could run tight circles around a level 1 and never get shot at, and a Scout can do that against a level 2, but not against a level 3. That isn't even on the wiki, but it is an important stat that changes and I'm surprised it's not listed anywhere since AFAIK everyone knows it.
My two cents is that having a level 3 is very important for a truly defensive position that forces players into close quarters, ideally in an elevated platform. The rocket salvo isn't very fast reaching, BUT it "sprinkles" that little bit of additional damage that either kills surprised players or dissuades players who wish to push past it. A level two sentry will just as quickly deal with about 6 of the other classes, but the classes to truly do pose a serious threat to your sentry are the Soldier, Demo, and in certain situations, the Heavy, and that's where the rocket salvo comes in handy, since these classes are slower than most others, and the rockets have a higher chance of splashing damage on them. Of course, if a good pyro can reflect those rockets it becomes dangerous even to the engineer himself, but that's not common, and usually it will only hit if you are in a really bad position. So I'll put it like this: Level 2's can be justified if the enemy team lacks any sort of competent soldiers or demos that could destroy your sentry.
I play both Pyro and Engie, and I have never seen another Pyro airblast my sentry rockets, and I wasn't able to airblast Sentry rockets while playing as Pyro
they do deal minicrits. I play pyro in RGL IM and airblasting rockets can be incredibly powerful. they're way more predictable than a soldier's rockets so you can airblast them much closer to the source. Gotten a few medics that way
Dane, people keep upgrading my gear to level 3 when I want it to be level 2 for the points you've listed. Please tell the engineers to not touch my gun!
It seems as though the level 3 sentry’s rockets aren’t meant to kill people directly so much as to incentivize them to move in certain ways. Tracking becomes easier when the rockets are flying, as for that moment you just have to predict what direction they’ll move to dodge the rockets, so you can take advantage of that while fighting alongside a level 3. Actually hitting them is a very juicy cherry on top.
ShadowOfAres No, a gunslinger isn't 'required' for offense. It's merely a supplement for bigger sentries. Also, mini sentries aren't as effective at holding the line if the defending team tries to make a push.
I meant in general, you are much more likely to use the gunslinger offensively rather than any other wrench because the extra setup speed of the mini sentry is what your team really needs to quickly get into an area and eliminate all enemies, remember leveled sentries are used for area denail, to prevent the other team from accessing an area, not for rushing and clearing enemy territory.
Everybody knows a Brass Beast Heavy next to a Dispenser/on top of a large ammo pack is the best Sentry Gun. It can even think for itself, and therefore Spy-check.
+MadSwedishGamer You also forgot one crucial thing. Having a Beggar's Bazooka Soldier clipping with the Heavy is an unstoppable strategy. Engie meta will never be the same again.
I believe it’s important to note how Pyro can take advantage of level 3 sentry rockets, killing the engineer in one hit, or at least leaving him extremely vulnerable to your teammates, as well as damaging the sentry a whole lot as well.
If I’m planning on building a sentry one place and immediately relocating it to somewhere else, I like to upgrade a sentry to level 2 and put 175 metal into upgrading it, that way if I need to put the sentry down to defend myself it or am rushed to put it down it can start working faster, but I can easily upgrade it with a single swing of the wrench if everything goes as planned
This is a great video and gave me insight on how to get my sentry into daring spots more easily, but it left one big question of mine unanswered... ancke dan whats the difence betyween level two sentey and level three sentey???????????????????????????????????
You may have forgotten that a good and clever Pyro can deflect level 3 rockets and possibly kill the engineer if he's there, since they will do 135 damage on direct hit. All you have to do is have a health kit around or a medic, and you can peek around the edge and wait for it to shoot a rocket.
+BonziBUDDY I thought about talking about this, but I've only seen that happen like 5 times in my entire life. It's certainly not a valid reason to keep your sentry at Level 2, imo.
+Uncle Dane Well I suppose it's pretty hard to get the distance right to not be blown up instantly but for the rocket to actually reach you in less than a second and a half . . .
+natchu96 I tried this but it is hard to trigger the rockets without getting killed. Then if the engineer is hiding behind the sentry you have to step out again
I agree with Dane. As a pyro, Ive only managed to reflect the rockets a few times, and all of those times were last ditch efforts that horribly failed due to the sentry's bullets.
when it comes to moving sentries to dangerous placed i uprgrade it to lvl 2 and at 175 metal in it so i can deploy it fast let it kill quick then hit it once for upgrade
Based on my experience if the sentry and enemy player are in a small or somewhat enclosed space then the rockets will hit the enemy player fairly consistently.
What to do as engineer: 1: Place teleporter entrance near spawn 2: Build level 2 sentry and move it 3:Make level 3 dispenser and move it to where they can use it 4: Place teleporter exit 5:Upgrade sentry to level 3
I think the best way to put a sentry in a good spot is to upgrade it to level 2 and carry it out to somewhere where you want it to be. Then make the choice to upgrade to level 3 or keep level 2.
Level two sentry doesn't shoot rockets. But that can be good because pyros can reflect sentry rockets but if there are no rockets the pyro can really only w+m1 it or shotgun.
I often play on harvest with the stock wrench and the shotgun and place a lvl 1 in a cheeky corner. People just underestimate the dps compared to the mini
I tend to use level 2 more than level 3 because, atleast in my experience, if you're the only engie and you've got a sentry set up, the enemy team will work together destroy it eventually, no matter how good the placement is. It's usually advisable to move your sentry every few kills, just to keep them unaware of it's position, but that's hard with how long a level 3 takes to build. A level 2 with the jag equipped goes up pretty damn fast, so I like to be able to pack up and move as much as possible, as quick as possible, and for as cheap as possible. The lvl3's rockets and extra health just dont stack up to these other benefits imo.
I feel like if you are on offense it will be better to use a lvl 2 sentry because it's more offensive while lvl 3 sentry has more defensive capabilities
Funny story: Took my 4 years up until I played tf2 to see a level 2 sentry gun. I only know level 1 and 3 Edit: I didn't Google it because I didn't know how to spell "sentry"

The universe explodes

It counts as far from wherever you spawn back in.
He even said the minimum damage is 50 so it would do 50 damage.

I look at it like this: In defensive situations a lvl 3 is required while on offense a lvl 2 is good enough.
#minisentrymasterrace
Not really, in offence a Gunslinger is required

Engie meta will never be the same again.
legohomemovies1 That... seems like a good strategy.

Yep. Idubbbz is Uncle Dane's good friend.
As a Pyro main, a level 3 sentry is essentially strapping a bomb to it.

Level two looks cooler
+NinjaDude5x5 no level 3 looks cooler
+My name was dumb So i changed it level 2
+Magical Idiot k i don't want to agrue on this its your decision
Level 2 looks cooler. Expect Level 3's better. Don't argue with me this is the only thing i'll post.
+Uncle Dane it's actually really easy to do idk why pyros don't do that.
I agree with Dane. As a pyro, Ive only managed to reflect the rockets a few times, and all of those times were last ditch efforts that horribly failed due to the sentry's bullets.
"But an extra *38* damage needed to destroy the sentry." (sigh) Uncle dane. I didn't want to say this but... It's 36.
1:08 and this is why you build sentries in a server full of dominating scouts
Meanwhile on lazy purple servers "someone kill the Uncle Dane wannabe!"
when it comes to moving sentries to dangerous placed i uprgrade it to lvl 2 and at 175 metal in it so i can deploy it fast let it kill quick then hit it once for upgrade
Derp Scorpion That's actually pretty smart. Thanks man
Derp Scorpion hey thats pretty good
Toxic Tuxedo
I actually do that
Or you can fire a single bullet so it’s 199 so instead of using 25 metal you use 1
Based on my experience if the sentry and enemy player are in a small or somewhat enclosed space then the rockets will hit the enemy player fairly consistently.
Idubbbz?

Yeah, he read that first comment. It says in the description.

6:42 "engineer needs a market gardener"
When moving up have a level one sentry one hit from upgrading so it can be re deployed faster if needed
What to do as engineer:
1: Place teleporter entrance near spawn
2: Build level 2 sentry and move it
3:Make level 3 dispenser and move it to where they can use it
4: Place teleporter exit
5:Upgrade sentry to level 3
6. Stay near dispenser and keep hitting sentry

I think the best way to put a sentry in a good spot is to upgrade it to level 2 and carry it out to somewhere where you want it to be. Then make the choice to upgrade to level 3 or keep level 2.
But pros can also air blast the Rockets back to the sentry

He knows that... Maybe not
If they survive the bullets
Yea it does not matter because by the time the rocket reaches the pyro is probs dead

Gman: “The right sentry in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.”
I love the intro.... " *whelp I guess this will do* "
Level two sentry doesn't shoot rockets. But that can be good because pyros can reflect sentry rockets but if there are no rockets the pyro can really only w+m1 it or shotgun.
what you do as pyro against a sentry is to annoy the shit out of teh engineer with teh scorch shot.
or get a pocket and reflect with airblast
Basically: The same shit but.
Lvl 3 haves Rockets, is higher, more health and you need to wait ti'll lvl 3 if you move it
Looking at them in order reminds me of Pokémon evolutions
The Pokemart music certainly helps
The level 1 sentry is one of the most underestimated things in the game imo
I often play on harvest with the stock wrench and the shotgun and place a lvl 1 in a cheeky corner. People just underestimate the dps compared to the mini
Mini sentry:
"All of you are babies"
I actually dont know the pozerups of mini sentrys.
Or 'All of you are weak adults!'
The lvl3's rockets and extra health just dont stack up to these other benefits imo.
edupes needs a sentry from ankle dain to destroy jonx

I just realized that in the intro, there's a snow-like crunch when Dane puts the toolbox thingy down.
I feel like if you are on offense it will be better to use a lvl 2 sentry because it's more offensive while lvl 3 sentry has more defensive capabilities
