Yes- Caecillius is played by Peter Capaldi, who later plays the 12th Doctor. Good spot! It's not the first time this has happened. Colin Baker played a centurian (or some sort of official) in a story long before he was cast as the 6th Doctor. Donna is brilliant in this episode! When, having told him he must stop the Volcano from killing everyone, she finally gets it, and puts her hands over his as they activate the machine together - I find this so moving. Then her impassioned plea for him to save just one person..... She still has me tearing up, even after all this time! I love the relationship the Doctor and Donna have. She isn't afraid to speak her mind- but when the chips are down, she steps up!
Yeah completely agree with you. There’s something about Donna that’s different to Rose and Martha. She feels like an actual partner to The Doctor where she’s making her own decisions and choices and not letting The Doctor tell her “No” I love it :)
Yeah in my opinion the scenes where Donna and the doctor having a moral conversation was a really strong part to the episode and honestly why I think I enjoyed it :)

This is where I really started to love Donna, who's my favorite companion. I don't think Rose or Martha would have helped the Doctor push the control like she did. Her character growth is amazing. So much foreshadowing in this story too.
Yeah. I do believe Donna is very different to the other companions. It’s possibly that she’s just older and more mature than the previous two. But I think it’s also because shes has more of a partner/companion feel to her. Doesn’t feel like someone who’s just following the doctor around but someone who actually makes her own choices and doesn’t let The Doctor say “NO” to her.

Love this episode i've actually been to pompeii where this disaster happened back in 2007 and the bodies are still there but their like statues now it was very emotional but interesting in a historical sense. Without spoilers one of those actors is a future Doctor and future companion.
I was gonna say that’s pretty cool but I guess it’s actually really sad seeing all that. Guess it can still have been an interesting experience to have though :)
This is probably one of my favourite historical episodes of dw, especially with how Donna is characterised. One interesting thing about the first three episodes of quite a few seasons is that they’ll have one episode set in modern day, one in the future and one in the past, and since the TARDIS crew tends to change quite regularly this gives you the chance to see how they will react in a very wide variety of scenarios. Looking forward to the next few Torchwood reactions, so I hope you enjoy the episodes!
Absolutely adore this ep... this is the first in Nu Who that is shot outside of the UK (last era has the most shot out of the UK) so it was amazing to see these set pieces... there's a lot of jokes and references inb this episode that will go over your head as you are very young (not jealous at all 👀😄) like the fire of rome which is a classic series, "i am spartacus" is a line from the movie spartacus where the characters all say they are spartacus, "she's from Barcelona" is a reference from faulty towers, which has an actor John Cleese who also starred in a classic series episode where his character also thought the TARDIS was a piece of art 😅... so i think all that added as well as a solid story, and a great character work between the Doctor and Donna make this such a fantastic episode... one that will always be remembered... Yes Peter plays the 12th Doctor... but not here 😅... he has been a fan of the show since a kid like david so he wud have lapped up to even have a small role... im glad he got two roles 😁 ... Im not surprised you missed Karen... with all that make up and baby face... i kind of love how the companions from Donna all star in a series before in some capacity before they become the companion for that series... billie ofcourse was for series 1 and then 2, freema was in series 2, then ended up in 3, Catherine got the same character but Runaway bride is technically series 3...and so ended up in series 4... and now you have Karen in series 4... who will be in series 5 ... i love that accidental coincidence 😄 Catherine really shut up a lot of people with this episode... her acting chops on full display... her heartbreaking performance (and so much more to come) ... i really wish she did more serious work... she's absolutely amazing... and she bounces of Tennant so perfectly... Next ... is my PFP 😁
That’s really cool to know that they filmed this outside of the UK. The episode definitely had a bigger scale to it and didn’t feel like a street in the UK that was transformed to look like another country. I love Karen Gillan, love her in Marvel. I’ve seen behind the scene day in the life videos she has done on TH-cam and thought she has an amazing personality to her. Can’t wait to see her more in Doctor Who :)
I’ve watched this show about 20 times now I’m watching it with you again. Watching it with someone else who’s not seen it before brings back the excitement of watching it for the first time for some reason 😂
You may not have spotted it... but the exterior scenes were filmed in the same set as the HBO series "Rome"... (Another great series if you haven't seen it)
According to RTD, Lobus Caecilius' name derived from books about real, historical people. An official Trading Card game (want to say Alien Armies, could have been Monster Invasion, but doubtful), had his name as Lucius Caecilius Lucundus (someone who lived in Pompeii and escaped the Volcano). However, in the script for the episode, his name was Lobus rather than Lucius & the use of Caecilius reference was more a referencial gag like how in The Unquiet Dead, they reference Charles Dickens writings or Shakespeare's plays in The Shakespeare Code. Though like how the shakespeare code ended with Shakespeare considering writing Hamnet rather than Hamlet, could headcanon Lobus Caecilius & Lucius Caecilius to be the same person & as a result, the Doctor was meant to save Caecilius' family rather than changing history. In addition to Peter Capaldi, the person who plays his wife, Tracey Childs, also played an antagonist in a 2001 Big Finish story called Colditz (3 guesses for the context), who goes on to become an unwilling companion who then becomes an ally in a run of Big Finish stories, made in 2010, all with the McCoy Doctor. Theres multiple Doctors and companions every time you turn around in this one😅.
This episode has two actor Scottish actors. Who went on to play main roles. Who then went on to James Gunn comic book adaptions..... who shaved their heads for the role
Pompeii is worth looking up. Real life Pompeii. As far as Peter Capaldi, he has been a massive Doctor Who fan since childhood so playing a Roman citizen in Doctor Who was wonderful. Little did he know …. This was a fantastic episode. As far as the end, that flashes back to the first Donna episode where the doctor was destroying the Racnoss. And Donna told him “you can stop now”. Each companion helped the doctor post time war, and each in a different way… but he progressed with each companion (rose, Martha, Donna)
For me, I think the reason he goes back is because of the Master. He say's "if you think I could back and save them that I wouldn't?" But he tried to save the master but the Master refused to regenerate. I think that was in his mind at this moment when he saw how hurt and vulnerable Donna was.
That would be a great reason for him to do it. But I think it’s just gonna be cause he saw how hurt Donna was. If we look at it from the episodes POV, that’s what it is. But if we’re to connect it to previous events, the master being the reason would be a good reason he saved them :)
DR Who has a long history of re-using actors; and not just in supporting roles either. Capaldi was not the first 'Doctor actor' to have appeared in the show previously - the 6th Doctor actor was cast after having earlier made a good impression playing a villain.
Yes, that is the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Did you know: The ginger girl in the cult, is Nebula & Future companion, Amy Pond. P.S i love your vids :)
i just wanted to say, yes, capaldi plays the doctor after matt smith (who is after tennant), and there is a theory, that maybe the doctor picks faces that meant alot to him in his life. like in this episode, this face, it made him give hope, even to one family, he saved /someone/ and i think thats why he "chose" this face to have in is next regeneration...also you just got a new subscriber!
