The SECRET behind Max's "feel" for the perfect F1 moment by Peter Windsor

  • Is Max Verstappen's seemingly-perfect feel for driving an F1 car something with which he was born? Or is it a quality he has developed and honed through hard work and experience? Peter Windsor in this video - in response to a viewer's recent livestream question - offers his opinion and, in so doing, compares Max with some of the other great drivers in F1's history.

Him and Alonso are the only guys to be grilling the team about the other teams strategy, watching the trackside big screens, completely chill and have extra room to think while wrestling an F1 car around. They just have that extra thing that makes them one step better than everyone, and its built in, they dont need to train for or learn it.... natural gift.

More to Peters point. All these people that keep saying "Oh it took until Lap 5,000 for Max to pass Sianz!"... NO.. Max could have done it on lap 3 or 4. But that would have put his car at massive risk as we saw a lot of aggressive attacking of the inside car going into turn 2 to force them off the track. The one thing Max knew he couldn't have happen was damage to his car. (Yet he still had some trouble with it in the final 5 laps and had to go very slow) He knew if he tried to pass Sianz early that Sianz would hit the RB19 and damage it. So he did exactly what I expected he'd do. Fake attacks into turn one, forcing Sianz to the inside making him drastically overwork the rear tires on a car that is crap on tires anyway. And as Peter said, Max could see the tires falling off Sianz car. Not forcing, taking his time, knowing the rear would come out on him. Which it did during and right after the lock up. Max took the lead then walked away. Look at how many other cars had to break away at turn 2 and go over the bumps damaging the underfloor. Lando, Georgo, Oscar before he was road raged by Hamilton. Charles against Sianz twice, which is exactly why Max refused to go for the pass there.

That's why they are better than their teammates. People who doesn't like Great drivers are struggling to accept that the cars are the same and the driver is making differences. Jenson said that Adrian cars are extremely hard too drive and Max can extract the maximum. The extreme camera zoom all the time by the F1 cameramen is really annoying beyond belief. Watch any old race on F1TV and they don't zoom in stupidly close and it looks a whole lot better, and you can defintely judge the speed better.
Also when you go into why Jacky Chan always films a whole seen rather than a close up, it is because he wants to paint the entire picture and show the true action going on. Not just faking a move to make it seem more exciting when it isn't. Which is what hollywood does all the time, and since F1 is now American owned I also think they are applying the same Hollywood filming tacticts.

In a recent documentary about Mike Powell's world record long jump during that legendary 'battle royal' with Carl Lewis in 1991, Powell declared that making that incredible jump to become world champion was something normal to him because from a very young age he had been visualising and rehearsing in his head the whole procedure and every aspect of how he would one day make the biggest jump in history.
I often suspect Max too started to do something similar in his head when young, maybe even as a child, and he might even have discussed it with his father.

Max has a very exceptional driving talent, including extra maturity now, namely waiting for the right moment and not attacking recklessly. Not everything just falls out of the sky.

Of course Max has thoughts in his head just like anyone else, he is only human... the difference is that Max as a human being is able to concentrate in a very natural way 100% on the job that needs to be done at that moment. The feeling Peter talks about has nothing to do with the luxurious position Max is in, on the contrary. Take the football player Messi as an example. In general, professional football players bathe in unprecedented luxury and yet Messi has a completely different feeling for the ball than all his fellow players. Maybe Peter can't process it properly because he doesn't recognize that feeling himself and can therefore only guess at it, like all of us. Max, just like Messi, has an exceptional feeling and that is what people with such a talent consistently show to the public time and time again.

I’d argue against Peter saying Max doesn’t have things clustered in his mind, of course he does. Who DOESN'T have things preoccupying their brain? I mean he could be thinking about the way he was raised, and the consequences, or he could be thinking about how racing is such a high risk sport that his life could reach a sudden stop (ala his father suddenly catching fire on live television).. I mean, there’s so many things.
It’s silly disregarding the mental strength of any person, and in this case, an F1 driver.
Saying Max has a better feel for his car because of his “privilege” is not a compliment. Nor is it factual.

Perez is driving the same car, so why isn't he at least second each race? In 2021 he didn't have the best car and that is why sometimes went all in with certain actions.
More than not, they paid off. Since Canada 2018 Max has been virtually unbeaten by all of his teammates with only an occasional better result for the other.
It is not just the car. It is the car, the driver and the team that is in perfect harmony. That is the trifecta why Max at the moment is winning basically every race. The races he didn't win in 2023 was due to his breaking down during qualifications, yet he still finished second and Leclerc crashing in Q3 with not enough time to restart the session. He even won that race. It was also the race that broke Perez...

Celebrate a dirty driver on a team that cheated to get ahead and also was in on the fox at AD21? Nah. I’m good. Some of us actually have integrity. Nothing he is doing is impressive. He doesn’t have to race anyone. Everyone knows how he drives when he has to actually race someone. 2021 will show you everything you need to know. At least 10 instances where he forced Lewis off track or attempted to hit him or brake tested him.
