I love low flight. "Acceptable Risk!" and well demonstrated here. I wish we could show the youngsters that flight is affordable and the adrenaline beats any video game 100x!

I really enjoyed this video. My favorite one on your channel so far. While I have my pilots license, I fly a paramotor; you should try it; many people say it’s life changing; low and slow, drop in on fields; no big deal if the engine goes out, just glide and land; run into the air and step back on earth; can mount it to a small trike if desired; amazing fun.
That was fun and very informative. I so hope I can fly one day.

I think the best part is that 55 is considered fast. I love flying around that speed when low but in some aircraft that's not much above stall so you end up going 75etc and you don't have the same fun experience... nor as safe. Looks like such a fun ac to fly.

A nice bit of fun flying around. Speed is a bit subjective, for an Ultralight that was fast but having been in a Tornado fighter jet at 50ft over the sea at .9mach I always look at my flyng now as being in 1st gear :-)

I think a slip is one of the most important maneuvers you can learn. How many new pilots are taught techniques to land an aircraft with flap failure. Luckily my dad got me a few lessons in a J3 cub many years ago and learned how important learning slips was. It’s not just important for flapless aircraft. It’s a great emergency skill to have in general.

I wouldn't want to find myself in a situation where I needed to pop over a row of trees or an obstacle, only to realize I have no airspeed and will rely solely on my prop to get me out of there. That would be the time the engine fails and I have an accident.

When I flew, it was always 1,000' or lower. Any higher seamed just boring. I must admit the little park was way out of town, in the foothills.😉🤓
I suppose every pilot flies differently. I like flying near 10k feet because it makes the world seem insignificant!

I used to have fun with my ultralight back in the day. I sold it many years ago b/c I did not like trailering it around and assembling and disassembling it. If I got back into it again, what pointers can I get on locating a hanger to keep it? Any and all replies appreciated!
Hangars away from metro areas are cheaper. There are likely to be waiting lists. Get on them now, even before you get your airplane.

I have more years of saving ahead of me before starting on my life-long goal of building a kit plane or two. But I have occasionally given some serious thought to buying something like the MXL-2 that you demonstrated before then. If I wouldn't have moved from Farm Country to the city long ago, I think I would have one for sure.

@@CourtneyTakesFlight Take a look at what Google says for "wingover." Also, I commend your need for speed but in a drag monster like the MXL-2 if the engine quits it won't help you much. My first ultralight flight was with Bob Essel in a Quicksilver in Ohio in 1994-ish btw.

That was my 1st experimental. Couple videos of it on RRH TH-cam. They're old ones I havent posted for a long time. I got rid of that and the then bought a challenger two, sold it bought a challenger one, Then me and my flying buddy Mike Robbins modified it into a light sport plane. , was mounting the engine and then life happened, had to sell it never even got to fly it. Put $10000 and 3 years of working on it.

You got cazone's there! I like you commenting regarding speed and what's going on around you. First time visiting your channel. 5600rpm what engine is it? yep if you're low and not landing you need speed on. however at height you can be closer to stall because you got recovery air under you. Courtney where is this? I notice your deaf but have a sport license. You don't need a radio for that? So you're somewhere in the states. I'm in West Palm Beach pretty crowded air space around here but I'm further West in the county. Too bad I'm too old to fly!

I don't think I could mentally handle a completely open cockpit. Even if I had an ultralight, I think I would have to have one with a fiberglass shell around it. Yes, of course, it's just all mental.
It's not for everyone. I had previously took a few lessons in a Cessna then the first time up in a Quicksilver, watching the whole ground falling away under you was a bit unsettling at first, but so cool!

Slip indicator, it shows you that you are in coordinated flight….it should be blowing straight back, if not your plane is not you need to add rudder in one direction or the other.

How does vne work? Why do you not want to exceed it? Can you for short bursts?
Vne is the never exceed airspeed. If you go pass it, components could start breaking off. If you do exceed it and safety land, your airplane may very well be damaged.
What do you need to fly something like that and do you need to comunicate to the airport there?
This one, being a 2-seater, requires a pilot certificate. And since it's outside of ATC airspace, no radio is needed.
I wish you safe landing. But looking the video first what came into my head - "Hey, look what I can do!!!". As one carpenter said: "I know safety rules as my two last fingers". Good look.

This is funny, because I just recently came from a few videos of plane crashes where they were flying low and fast. Screwing around and laughing all the way up to the point of death. And then all these videos and comments, the lesson was, ALTITUDE is life. It's much safer to fly high than low. Something can happen in an instant and there is no time nor altitude to recover. Then, I come to this video...hmmm...

The camera doesn't make great videos, but rather the camera operator and video editor. Cutting edge cameras in the wrong hands frequently result in boring videos. You're welcome to send me a brand new GoPro though.
Haha I thought I recognized that airport. I fly my paramotor out of there and live right in Newberg. Been heavily debating a craft more like this. The paramotor is tough on the body. What's a discovery flight running for $?
You could take a discovery flight. I recommend you contact Captain Drake's Family Aerial Adventures in Southern Oregon about a discovery flight. I don't know what they charge specifically but $150 is in the ballpark.

How many hp in your engine? It seems kinda weak to me but I am only comparing to other videos--I have no plane yet. If you had a 130lb friend with you it would have been difficult if not impossible to fly as you did in this video, right?
52 HP. As with all airplanes, more HP means more weight. It's always a compromise. With my current engine, I have 430 lbs payload capacity - people and fuel.

aren't you "supposed" to stay below E airspace, 1,200 ft agl?
If it's VFR conditions, it's below 10,000 ft. If it's instrument flying conditions, there are restrictions.
I have to ask, do you worry about upsetting property owners when flying low and slow over their homes and fields?
The FAA regulations say 500 feet from people, buildings, vehicles etc.

I also know my neighboring ranches and that they have two reactions to very low flying planes, ultralites and powered parachutes, it is annoyance and anger. I have a 1200' runway on my property that I stopped using because everyone around me seems to think that they own the sky above their property. I was wondering if you have had any negative feedback from your low flights?
Do under an overpass.
Piece of cake, just like a touch and go landing, ignore the brigde, in a matter of seconds your through and you're done.
I suggest going with traffic.
If I do that, I risk losing my pilot certificate, and perhaps my ground instructor certificate.

It could happen at any altitude. For instance, you could be hit with a sideways gust on an otherwise uneventful landing approach and before you get a grasp on what happened a wingtip is ready to hit the ground.

Easier said than done. An unnecessary risk unless it's an emergency.
@@CourtneyTakesFlight I had to do it as a crop sprayer in Southern Africa and also under much lower phone lines and at Pawnee speeds. It was routine - not an emergency.
@@XRP747E crop dusters are different. They've the training and experience to do this, plus their airplanes have safety devices, such as blades to slice through wires if they accidentally hit one.

@@CourtneyTakesFlight During that period in South Africa and Zimbabwe, there was NO specific training for crop spraying. You learned on the job. The biggest dangers may not be what you think - plus observational techniques need to be understood about not readily apparent obstacles. I was thinking about that as I watched you low flying in your interesting video. Flying at lower speeds definitely reduces the chances of an accident.

@Courtney Takes Flight Lol🤣👍🏻! I was in the U.S. Navy as a jet engine mechanic & airframe mech as well. Have alot of experiance with aircraft carrier flight ops, launch & recoveries. Ive always wanted to see an ultralight airplane land & take off aboard a carrier flight deck at the landing airstrip section of the flight deck. " CAT" is the aircraft launch sequence & "TRAP" is the landing with the aircraft tail hook & flight deck arresting cable.
My Uncle's aircraft carrier is a museum now out there in San Diego, California--U.S.S. MIDWAY CV-41! You could try that one, but a word of caution ⚠️. . . . .the deck is fouled with static display aircraft. . . . .you still game???🤔🤔🤔🤭😁😉

Wow, there is a lot of play in the joystick. The pilot had to pull the joystick way back to take off, then way forward to its neutral point. It looks like a very forgiving plane to fly with all that free play.
It's not much free play, but rather, an optical illusion. Most pilots have the stick's "neutral" position further forward than mine. I moved mine back, which means I have to pull further back to climb. In flight, it's pretty precise without "Freeplay"

Question- Do your aircraft include a ballistic parachute? Have you ever heard of them being deployed in the event of an emergency? It seems to me, you are flying too low for these things to be effective. Thoughts?
@@masteringsecuritymanagemen4803 You have to be about 500+ ft AGL, 1,000 feet preferably for the parachute to work fully. I rarely fly below 1,000 except when I'm rolling video.

You know you are flying low when you have to climb to get over the barb wire fences. Just keep away from flocks of sheep, they go nuts, instinctive fear of attack from the air.

Ironically I find farm animals don't get startled when I fly low. If I'm about 100ft+ sure but below that not. I think they just see me as a tractor... genuinely they don't run. They just stare.

Well yes, just poking fun at the term fast and a quick silver. I've been flying since I was 14. Started with hang gliders in the mid 70's then general aviation before the end of that decade, piper tomahawk " trauma" hawk. To expensive so settled on the Kasper Wing ultralight, really slow, very hard to stall. So slow I became very versed at flying backwards🤔. Most folks on the ground were dumbfounded how in the hell can you fly forward hover and backward, I just usually answered,"Very carefully". But as you know it's all up to the headwind power setting and attitude and additude see what I did there. Later went back and got my private, land, sea, and multiengine ratings.
Then sold the Kasper, bought a Pterodactyl Ascender, I call it an Ass Ender. Looks like it should fly backward. Been flying it since the early 1990's. Actually a very good flyer and very maneuverable.
Owned many ultralights and experimental aircraft over the last couple of decades currently fly my Pterodactyl and a Cessna 177. I've flown hundreds of hours low and slow over the country side and farms. It's an awesome way to relax and let the ground roll by. Just yourself the wind and the scenery.
Biggest twin I've flown is a Cessna 310. Flying low over the terrain and flat out is a whole other deal it's extremely expensive, and a slight mishandling of the controls and you've dug a RIP 🕳️ or just a skidmark at about 230 mph.
One thing is that at low speeds in the Pterodactyl say 45mph it's so much easier to add a little speed and definitely easier on the engine flying low and in ground effect since this reduces drag and the control response is better as well. Just have to keep the wind maker running.

Currently flying a little spy plane from BAB.
Just saying there is no reason to slip a Quick Silver. No reason to worry about the engine to quit, it’s Going to Quit. Better to have your cell phone and get to know all the farmers fields you’re flying over. If you trip on the engine stopping all the time, you can’t relax and in joy the moment.
I’ve meet some of the best people I know, after landing in their fields, fixing stuff, meeting their families.
