I just have to say that Twice Shy was my favorite book I've read all year (and probably in a long time....) and I think it's soooo underrated. I wish there were so many more books with introvert type characters.
You know I was skeptical about “Birthday girl “ because I’m gonna be honest their age gap is huge and one I would never be okay with in real life. I have a sister who is 19 and if she came to me with an almost 40 year old boyfriend I would freak out. That aside Pike and Jordan were true soulmates and I really loved their relationship. Pike is book husband material period. They fell in love with each other as people and how good they worked with each other. So their connection is definitely one should aspire for at love
I didn't like birthday girl very much because a 38 year old man tried to groom me when I was 16, and some of the things Pike would say about Jordan reminded me of things he would say to me. I also felt like the characters were 1 dimensional and I hated the "evil ex wife" trope. That being said it was still a really entertaining read and I get why people love it.
i think people need to realize that fiction isnt meant to be safe ! people write graphic murder and stuff in books- that doesnt mean we condone murder ! when books explore "taboo" relationships and concept like these, we as readers are the ones who are meant to use our judgement to know whether the content is something we shouldnt replicate irl. i mean, these types of stories are meant for adults for a reason- obviously kids who are still learning about the world and about healthy relationships aren't ready for this type of book ! but all that to say- you shouldn't feel bad for reading these types of books! i think fiction is an amazing way to explore taboo relationships such as age-gap, incest, abuse, etc etc etc and dig deep in all the ways these things can occur and affect humans, *without* hurting real life people. art & writing have never been pure and if we try to erase those types of concepts we are effectively sanitizing history and putting on fools gold just so we can look at it feel comfortable and forget about the ugly parts. i went on a rant but- read all the freaky shit you want ! as long as you know not to replicate it in real life

I just read edenbrooke after your recommendation…. And I loved it. It reminded me of one of my favorite books courtships and curses which is a Ya regency romance with magic. But what it also had depth in that the main character was dealing with being disabled after a illness. I am sure that if I’d read punk 57 in middle school i would’ve been obsessed with it, however I never liked the cover and just decided to pick it up a few months ago because of how much I loved birthday girl. I hated it. It has great sex scenes but aside from that the story just didn’t speak to me, and after finishing it I stared reflecting a lot on what consent means and deep stuff i really didn’t want to think about. I still love Penelope Douglas, I’ve read all of her Stan alones and aside from punk love them all (even misconduct)
