  • This is about cleaning the DMD area inside a BenQ MP622 that I previously worked on. After shipping it back, some dust was loosened and got onto the DMD. After cleaning the projector ran great and the end user was very happy.
    Please know this video is missing the final portion where I re-assemble and test. I am going to upload more partial videos as they do show useful info, just not the entire process.

    Hi, im from Argentina, i bought a Benq TK 800m a year ago, and honestly it's amazing, movie like experience in your home! But i recently noticed that it has 3 dust motes on the screen when the image that its showing is completely black or close to it, so i probably have to open it up and clean it. I can't find a video of that specific model disassembly but this one helps me a lot because they are of the same brand and very similar, so thank you for this video, it will help me a lot!!! I hope i can fix it without destroying it hahahaha!

    Great video, Frank! Would you maybe consider making a video on how to clean the optical unit on a BenQ W1070? Or is the process pretty much the same as in this video?
    I am having some small spots on the screen that are visible when some colours or backgrounds are shown.
    You are the best and thank you for what you do!

    Hey Frank, Top man. I always give thumbs up on all your videos. I was impatiently waiting for this video. so, the dust is gathered on the actual DMD then? It never occured to me to clean the chip. Wow!!

    • @FixitFrank

      Thanks man! I think so. It seems like it was in one of the crevices where the bottom attaches. The way the dust bits were solid kind of pointed to them being compacted at some point. It could have been in a few places though. There are a decent amount of nooks and crannies to hide in.

      Thats tough. r/projectors is good but I think the one at hometheater forum or even eevblog might be better. I tried reddit but its reddit... No one ever searched the subs. They just posted the same questions that had been answered 100x and most of them were "I bought a cheap junk projector on amazon for $80 and its not working, wat do?".

    Thanks for posting this Frank! If dust is in the optical block, does it typically show up as a small spot on the screen? I just bought a used BenQ HT2050a and there were two very large fuzzy-looking spots (I'm guessing dust bunnies), each taking up probably ~5% of the screen. I tried replacing the old lamp and no change. I ran the projector on high altitude mode thanks to a tip I found online and that got rid of one of the two spots (I actually saw it get pushed off the screen), but the other one has remained in place. I'm hoping to avoid getting into the optical block, so am wondering if a much larger spot means that the dust is located in some other area of the projector and can be removed with a different method. Any thoughts?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's probably inside if its visible in the picture. If the dust is before the DMD in the optical path, it tends to be washed out by the light. If its on the DMD or in front, it shows up like that. See if you can focus in on the dust blob. If you can sharpen the shadow, its in front for sure. I'm actually working on an 2150 right now with a dust blob issue(same chassis). I should have that video up this weekend. sit tight and I will see if I can show you any tricks that minimize disassembly.

    Hello Frank, I have a BenQ W1070 that started to have the image stop working after 5 - 30 minutes (gray screen, buttons not responsive as far as I could tell. Lamp, sound and fans still running- projector seemed to think all was well) It then progressed to only lasting a few seconds to then only having the power light on solid red and a noticeable squeal now coming from the unit (I suspect from the power supply). I seem to be getting the expected standby voltages, 3.22V and 14.8V. In this video at 7:30 you mention the PWD1000 as a possible cause, do you happen to have a video on troubleshooting this? I have also been unable to find a data sheet for this chip, if possible could you post a link for this. Thanks for your videos and help

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly that sounds like a color wheel issue. The squealing and the grey screen are symptomatic of that. The voltages look ok to me.
      I found the service manual for the w1070 on elektrotanya.com and it has the pmd1000 circuit but I don't think it's a power problem from your description. At least not yet. I'd focus on the color wheel and color wheel sensor. I'd recommend downloading the service manual and check the color wheel first.

    Hey Frank, I have suddenly noticed specks of dust. Could this be because it stood on a dusty table? And how do I do this in my BenQ TH681?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd have to see a picture to be sure. It could be dust or a bad DMD depending on the spot shapes. Can you focus onto the spots at the same time as the picture or is the picture focused and you see blobs with halo's? Dust spots will be out of focus when the image is focused and vice versa. If you see clear spots with the picture then the DMD might be bad.

      @@FixitFrank the specks can be focused on. If I have a clear picture they look like slightly brighter spots. My girlfriend doesn’t notice them but to me they ruin dark scenes. If I adjust the lens I can focus on the spots.

      @@FixitFrank I think I ruined my projector. I couldn’t reach the chip like in your video but only by removing the lens in front of the whole assembly. Then I wiped it down with a cotton swab and window cleaner (a repair guy told me to do this) and now it has even more dust and as a bonus some nice smudges. However I think there’s a glass in front of the chip which is what I cleaned

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dont use window cleaner on a projector. The lens coating will be stripped. dionized or distilled water is okay but no solvents. your DMD is likely what is dusty.

    • @FixitFrank

      Its kind of involved. You need to take the screws out near the lens that hold the prism and LCDs in place. I have an old panasonic LCD video where I take an LCD out. The steps are pretty close.

      Not really. Then you have to take the whole DMD card apart. It chances damaging the connections between the DMD and the riser. If I was replacing the DMD I would probably clean it from the back but for this, going though here was fine and it let me show all the lenses better.
