So cool that you got into backpacking from a whisperlite stove! I have used them several times -- most often for higher elevations and colder temps. Once you master how to get the most out of those babies, no gear presents any kind of challenge. I once saw somebody essentially set a picnic table on fire (accidentally, of course) trying to get one set up. I love those things, but they are old school.

I'm still waiting for my permit to get approved, but I am planning to hike SOBO on the PCT this year and am rewatching your videos...thank you! I used to love to hike and for the past 8 years I have been floundering and spinning my wheels and not taking care of myself. The PCT has been a dream of mine since 2017. I hope my permit gets approved but I wanted to sincerely thank you, from the bottom of my heart for recording your hikes and sharing. You've inspired me to get back to myself and I'm very grateful. Cheers to you!

Great to hear your "hiker origin story." My introduction was from my dad, which more like going on a military expedition. And my brother, who liked hiking, but never wore hiking gear--it was all tennis shoes and cotton t shirts. Luckily there was a class at my junior high--Outdoor Fitness--that we could take as an alternative to PE. That helped me figure out day hiking, which I did from teens to 20s. Backpacking trips came in my 30s. Mountain climbing was added in my 40s. Still haven't done a thru hike! And I still use hiking boots or hiking shoes--sorry! Just can't make the break to trail runners. ha ha.

Thanks, Krysta, for sharing your “beginning” story with us. Your story is so interesting and quite amazing. It’s been such fun watching your videos, I started when you were doing the PCT. You are also so kind to your “audience” in that we have one of your video treats every week. I’m also enjoying your short videos of your NZ hike on Instagram. Keep on hiking❤❤

I don't like hiking boots - there must be good reasons for their use in some cases, but I've always hiked in shoes (day hikes only so far!). I don't like how hiking boots are so stiff; I prefer my feet to be able to move - this distributes the work more broadly over more joints.
