Layne's voice was one that comes around once every 50 years, or hell once in a lifetime. It was like another instrument in the band. Powerful, haunting, tear the paint off the walls type of voice, wow.

98whitesox Jerry once said something like that in an interview. That the Alice "sound," meaning the trademark & sometimes haunting 2 part harmony was meant to be like another instrument. A distinct sound all of its own.

Jonathan Burton My husband told me this disturbing fact he had read about Alice in Chains (he is not a fan and I have always been) he said they were originally going to be a "glam rock" band". As we know Glam was certainly fading at that time and they were then sort of pushed to go with towards the grunge style. I agree you they are way more metal. I think they are dark metal.

    Mind, of destructive taste
I choose to stroll amongst the waste
That was your heart lost in the dark
    Call off the chase
Walls of thought, strong and high
As my castle crumbles with time
I think of you, oh, yes I do
    Such a crime
    You opened fire
    And your mark was true
    You opened fire
Aim my smiling skull at you
    You opened fire
    I live tomorrow
    You I'll not follow
    As you wallow
    In a sea of sorrow
    Lines cut across my face
Why you laugh at my disgrace
I'll never know how far to go
    To reach that place
    You opened fire
    And your mark was true
    You opened fire
Aim my smiling skull at you
    You opened fire
    I live tomorrow
    You I'll not follow
    As you wallow
    In a sea of sorrow
    You opened fire

They actually sold far far far more copies than Nirvana at the time and were more respected critically. Alice in Chains were hotter basically, and Kurt deeply envied them for it. Retrospectively all the fucking hipsters will ofc take his words at face value though. Same reason Nirvana Fans hate Hole really, they proved that Nirvana wasn't just Grungy, but also not that good.

    • @SplashTasty
      @SplashTasty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms you mean before nevermind came out? Yeah no fucking shit because that was their biggest album. Obviously AIC would have been more respected in 1990 considering Nirvana wasn't a big thing. To pretend nirvana wasnt this goliath that culturally overshadowed Alice in chains is bananas. Kurt could have deeply envied AIC at the time, who the fuck cares lmao Nirvana became waaaaay bigger than them, and then kurt and Staley Died 8 years apart from one another and it was over.
Now I have to say, Alice in chains is genuinely a really good band. But to try to take away from the impact of nirvana is delusional and is ironically the thing you are trying to critique 'hipsters' of doing

Yes! And you know what's good about their songs in general? The way Jerry portrays his lyrics and bring them to real life. Rooster for instance is about his grandfather who fought the Vietnam war, right? That's very inspirational and worthy of a movie representation. Sunshine is another fantastic song off of Facelift and it's about Jerry's mother if I'm not mistaken. I guess this is the main essence of Alice in Chains and this is what makes them become magical.

The magic of their music is still alive! Current Alice in Chains lineup really captures the essence of what they used to be and sound back then. As long as we're still giving these guys a listen, we're honoring their artistry and presence on stage. ❤

There are still amazing bands today...a lot are underground. We are the reason they can't get anywhere because we would rather listen to a song that is 27 years old instead of making the effort to search out good music. As a musician it irritates me but here I am as guilty as anyone.

I admit I love Nirvana and grew up listening to metal and grunge (and everything else since I love music) but I definitely love AiC more. (before Layne passed). Their music was amazing, and the Unplugged performance still gets me choked up when they open up with Nutshell and Layne walks out to a warm applause (despite his drug problems and not having performed in a long time). RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr

AiC used to BE a "hair band" back before Jerry joined up with Layne. LOL They still have long hair in this video btw, but I know what you mean about how the grunge scene ended the glam metal scene and I honestly didn't mind since the music was better. Pantera brought metal back to the forefront so did Manson.

stylesclash241 Hair metal doesn't have to be a style. It's that fruity gay ass sound that you hear in the song Girls, Girls, Girls. Some Guns N Roses bullshit. Even though that inspired some of them earlier on. It doesn't make them their hair

This song is heavy and awesome! Their first studio album "Facelift" was more metal sounding than grunge, but it was an absolute masterpiece! This song is perfect to blast in your car with the windows down for the whole world to hear :)

Today's generation needs to acknowledge what "good music" stands for, right? Alice in Chains breaks every single barrier of "grunge style has boring or slow songs with crappy lyrics" and proves us that Layne Staley's capacity of hitting extremely impossible notes with his incomparable blessed cords is a gift that nobody else could replicate and if they tried, would fail all at once.
