they are a historical marker in my book that they define the era. the world only got worse and their meaning and raw truth... man.. u just don't get that from much any other band of that time, definitely not if we just are to consider actual rock and not like rap or underground techno of the time. ppl still struggling and AIC made us realize just how fucked we were with their open confessional of drug addiction. and sorrow.

I'm an old fart. Late 50s. Grand Funk, Zep, even Chicago and Three Dog Night punch my buttons. But AIC and this Staley lad, I've been studying them for the last couple of years. Yes, I know. Late to the game, as usual. But wow, these guys could compose music like no one's business. And masterful performing. An original sound and feel that's uniquely their own and hugely appealing. It's painful to know Mr. Staley's life ended way, way too early. But man, I dig their music big time. They had/have soul.

I lost my father back in June last year, I know that feeling all too well my friend. It’s okay to let yourself cry, often makes you feel better. I didn’t cry at all about his death for weeks after the day it happened. I went for a walk listening to my tunes and I just sat on a tree trunk overlooking the river and then Nutshell came on and man I didn’t realise how much I was sitting on. I cried so much but afterwards I felt like a new man, so much built up pain that I didn’t know was there was released and I felt amazing after.

It was only really around the last years of Layne’s life that anyone got honest about why the band wasn’t together as up until then they’d still try and cover for him and lie about his condition. Layne had a lot of friends and family who tried to help him in every way possible. It didn’t matter though. If someone won’t help themselves there’s nothing anyone else can do for them.

Oh no no no.... because to put them in, would lead to comparisons with other bands who got in. We know there's no comparison for the quality of the entire body of work. They should stay above the fray and not be thrown in that mixing pot. Hell, they were so good, they broke rock, similar to how Neo broke the matrix. When the greatest guitarist who ever laced them up becomes the band's groupie (Eddie Van Halen), you know they're so far above the rest in the field, that no real comparisons can be made. Rock was all downhill after their time ended. Yes, Cornell & Bennington had smash hits afterwards, but those 2's entire body of work would not slay and overwhelm the way AIC's did, and continues to do so today, due to its timeless nature.

I’m only 16, yet I love all of these old grunge artists better than present day music. Today’s music just feels so artificial due to the heavy use of autotune in almost every song. But back then, there was none of that. Just raw, touching vocals. Not about heartbreak, not about boys or girls, but about life and how moody and honest it can really be. I’m a way it’s special. I remember I was like 24 when I first heard this. I loved it. A few years later, my Dad who had been battling cancer told me, "Hey I love this song No
Excuses. It sounds like he is singing about me." He was 21 years older and listened to classic rock but when he said that it floored me. Music has no age. He is dead now, but that he liked an Alice In Chains song is one link I never thought we would have.

    Lyrics:
    It's alright
    There comes a time
    Got no patience to search
    For peace of mind
    Layin' low
    Want to take it slow
    No more hiding or
    Disguising truths I've sold
    Everyday it's something
    Hits me all so cold
    Find me sittin' by myself
    No excuses, then I know
    It's okay
    Had a bad day
    Hands are bruised from
    Breaking rocks all day
    Drained and blue
    I bleed for you
    You think it's funny, well
    You're drowning in it too
    Everyday it's something
    Hits me all so cold
    Find me sittin' by myself
    No excuses, then I know
    Yeah, it's fine
    We'll walk down the line
    Leave our rain, a cold
    Trade for warm sunshine
    You my friend
    I will defend
And if we change, well I
    Love you anyway
    Everyday it's something
    Hits me all so cold
    Find me sittin' by myself
    No excuses, then I know

This band wrote music. The themes are deep. The band name itself being interrelated to the story of going down the Rabbit hole, but being chained to not knowing. Hence a song like man in a box. Pretty damn existentialist if you ask me. Bands in these days not only made music the videos actually had unique imagery like this one.

"Artists" these days don't put the same soul into their music. If you take a look at it, most music is mass produced generic pieces of garbage that all sound like they follow a fill in the blank sheet.
Things like One Direction, Beyonce, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and many many more "artists" are all examples of people who use emotions of young insecure people to sell their "music". Almost none of the "artists" I mentioned even have a credible stand with an audience over the age of 25.

+Mad Season it really is interesting how it is a specific task of creating non purposfull music that will just make them money
they know their audience is just silly people so that's what they make for them
the diffrence in the last few decades that some important philosophical music made it to main stream now most do not.
NOW one must search for musical treasures
