    A couple years ago I bought a 240lb rhino, I really like it. A local blacksmith group give classes, using the ones off amazon like the one shown. They are for the students to use instead of tearing up the bigger, more expensive ones. I have to say that for student use, they have held up remarkably well.

      Yeah there are definitely a lot of more high quality options out there, but these ones work really well for the pricing!

    I recommend the London pattern anvil from Vevor it has a usable prichel hole and weights 66 pounds

    I have the 132 lbs version of this anvil and it is honestly a great anvil. I am very impressed with it. I own 2 other anvils that are worth 3-4 times the price I paid for this one and honestly it is just as good as my others.

    I have the same anvil. I put two 3” magnets on the anvil. 1 one the side and 1 under the horn. No more ringing. It’s been a good anvil so far. I’ve hade it 3 years now.

    I bought the Harbor freight Doyle 65 lb anvil

      That sounds like a very similar option based off everything I’ve seen about it!

    I read some place that if you attach a magnet to the anvil it will deaden the sound also. But, I’m no expert! Thanks for the information. I have it on order now…from Vevor = $98.99 with free shipping and NO taxes charged!!!

    I lucked out and found me a 200 pounder for 300$ Canadian mind you lol. The beast has some pock Mark's but still has some descent edges and is good for a starter anvil for me lol.

      Dang that sounds awesome! I’ve been on the lookout for a good anvil for a decent price like that for a while now. Great for you!

      @@ToddKoch and I've finally tested it out for the first time today. Brother Bear forge is semi operational. I have to make my touch mark and get a few more things in my shoper running but I successfully forged a spade J hook with a twist from a piece of 7 inch long 1/2 round. So I'm happy lol.

      @ToddKoch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad, sounds like a promising start!! Touchmarks can be tricky, it took me a while to get mine down all the way!

      @@ToddKoch I've got it designed I just need to make it. I've got a dremel pen with some steel cutting bits, so here's hoping I can do it with relative ease.

    • @ToddKoch
      @ToddKoch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a very good way to go about it! Definitely some smaller work then usual but still satisfying nonetheless.

    Pretty thorough and cool video. I was looking at this cheap anvil option and this video gave me a lot of useful insight, thanks!

    mate put some big heavy chains around the base of the anvil it’ll help

  • @melgross
    @melgross ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice. There’s no ideal anvil hardness though. Some makers harden to 48 RC and some 56 RC. There are advantages to both.

    It seems as though it has served you well. Like anything else if you take care of your anvil it should last you a long time until you are ready to upgrade to something better.

    • @ToddKoch
      @ToddKoch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that was my reasoning behind the resurfacing!

      @@ToddKoch I got to thinking about this today as I myself dropped the ball on this one.............If you are not going to be forging for a bit, be sure to apply a light coat of oil on your anvil, hammers, etc...............3 in 1 oil works well and is easily available.

    Haha, this ring is beautiful but hearing it all the time must be loud and annoying) maybe it's worth your while to weld thick rings around the base and cut threads in them to bolt it up properly
    Guys, stupid question here: can you cast not cast iron, but steel instead? What would happen if you poured steel into the mold?

    • @ToddKoch
      @ToddKoch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the ring was definitely getting tiresome haha!
      As for the cast iron question, I have no clue!

    • @MoabYoda
      @MoabYoda ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These anvils like his are actually cast steel. Most modern production anvils are also cast steel. I am not sure anyone still makes forged steel anvils anymore. Some of the lower end anvils like those from Harbor Freight are cast iron and lack the ring and rebound that you get from the cast steel ones. I would honestly not waste you money on a cast iron one. I will agree with original poster though that these anvils are actually pretty good and a great buy for the money. I own 3 anvils 2 are very high quality and one is the 132 lbs. Version of this anvil and honestly it is just as good as my other 2 at are worth 3 or 4 times as much.
