Ron your shelters are top notch. I was able to go in one and I have to say, the level of quality you put into them is second to none. Everything is thought out and executed to perfection. And I don’t know if you remember or not but I actually met you in Port O Connor years ago. You answered every question I asked and you was the nicest person anyone could have the pleasure to meet. If one day I ever can afford to put in a shelter, I’m not looking anywhere else except at Atlas. Great video, great shelters, and a great person in general.

I was a little shocked to have the man himself on the line but I got through my questions and Ron ran down my list with answers. When the boss answers the phone it means something. Unfortunately, by that time all the ones in good locations were taken or being resold at exorbitant markups, so one dream down the tubes. These underground sites were originally main repeater stations for the L3 or L5 carrier long distance(toll) facilities. It operated on buried transcontinental coaxial cables. These main repeaters were spaced along the route about 100 miles apart, with many smaller auxiliary repeaters in between. They were called "hardened routes". One cable carried thousands of phone calls! The main equipment room would of been filled with bays of amplifiers, regulators, equalizers, also LMX2 bays ( multiplexing equipment ), channel banks and group modulators. It was all so fascinatingly complex! I miss those days of the old technology! All of this was replaced by 1992 by fiber optic cables. These are historical sites.

What an awesome place to live…. Just to throw an opinion out there…. I like all that metal up in the ceiling …run all your vents above it and just put a drop ceiling in…
The diesel generator… I would definitely leave it there for a back up ….people would give anything to have something like that,
Control panels electric boxes ….definitely leave them there also.. that’s just a cool piece of history..
Which ever way you decide to go …it’s a piece of history all in itself… I think any of us would love to take a tour when you’re finished.

Pretty much everyone reading my post has passed telecom bunkers on a fairly regular basis. Many if you probably pass a few of them on the way to work. Ever seen the green boxes on the roadside that are maybe a foot tall and a few feet by a few feet in dimension? Those are entrances to telecom equipment bunkers called controlled environment vaults. They are mini switching stations used for distributing phone service to neighborhoods. They are air conditioned and humidity controlled. So watch out for one the next time you are going down a main road lined with subdivisions.

I would leave the generator in place. These units never go bad and its nice to have a free backup power system. So far its starting to look like home. With all of that land they should instal as decent solar power system.
He must have a very understanding wife to live like this until each section is finished.
That emergency escape does not look very well protected. I did not see a blast door protecting the bunker. I would also hope these sites have been taken off of Russia's hit list since they have been decommissioned from the emergency comms system. But from what I see is happening in Ukraine the Russians don't give a damn about the civilian population.

@UndergroundLiving : You have been truly blessed to have this nice place as your home. I live in Kansas and I never knew about the AT&T Bunkers. It will take a lot of time and much patience to accomplish all the renovations but won't it be wonderful l when you are finally done?
God bless you and your family!

One of these was on the market in my area a couple years ago on 10 acres for 1.5 mil. Did I miss what they are doing for power when the grid goes down? He said they were taking the generator out.

Converting the lighting to LED will drastically lower the power requirement for a bunker this size. Minimal need for heating or cooling, compared with a house on the surface, the main power draw would be ventilation fans.
The original generator(s) were also rated to run the entire communications network ( at least until the next bunker re-boosted the signal). Domestic requirement could be met by a good size solar array with a battery bank, with grid connection as initial backup .
In the event of SHTF, a decent diesel generator, probably 7200w tradesmen type, would probably be sufficient for most needs, and is tiny, compared with the original, both in size and fuel consumption.

Just stumbled on this channel so pardon my newbie question. What is the water and power source for these bunkers (in general) in case of a nuclear attack?

    • @TexasVeteranPatriot

Ex ATT power tech here... All have a well and septic (or cess pool/lagoon) onsite and are powered by one or more 225 kw diesel turbine engines.

I looked into them but they aren’t secure enough. I won’t tell the vulnerabilities, but those AT&T sites are better than missilery sites because the only contamination is diesel and PCB’s.

The only bad thing I can come up with about living in a bunker is that someone could weld the door shut, block off the air intake and wait. Occupants would die, unseal it and take the supplies. It wouldn't be hard to find tunnels with a metal detector.
