    The biggest issue with his custom bunker is fresh food. The storage above the bedrooms is great. But where is the cold cellar? And why use so much space for games room or an office? If you're living in a fall out shelter its because the world is toast.. You should have created a nice 200 sq ft indoor hydroponics room. grow fresh lettuce and veggies

    • @billfred9411
      @billfred9411 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Even state of the art bunkers are only practical for around three years and that's with hydroponics and water reclamation systems. You would be lucky to last a few months in this bunker I bet. The way the ventilation system is just sitting on the top makes me think it would just be toast if the bombs dropped somewhat close by.

    Issues with the bunker concept:
    1. Off-grid - is all the electricity via gas generator? Where is the hardened generator (outside the front door is not survivable)? How about batteries for smoothing supply/use, or when the gennie is out? No consideration for solar or wind?
    2. Sewage disposal/water supply - is it per bunker or centralized? Either one has problems.
    3. Fresh air - where is the filtration system for air intake? Are there CO2 scrubbers and tanked oxygen when fully closed down?
    4. Envelope Integrity - incredibly poor. The "NBC filters" break the concrete, and are not as strong. The chimney at the rear was for venting off-gassing from ammunition stored in the bunker, and not designed to prevent ingress. The emergency hatch fails on so many levels, first breaking envelope Integrity, then being subject to the same issues that could block the main entrance (ice/snow). Neither entrance is airlocked, which means that once you go in, you can't go out and back in without compromising the cleanness of the bunker.
    5. These were ammo storage bunkers, and well-designed for that purpose, which is to ensure that any accident would limit damage to only the affected bunker. The concrete shell and over-burden is intended for explosion containment, not keeping things out.
    6. The construction of these ammo storage bunkers as blisters on the landscape, and the totally flat area means that a relatively small (sub-megaton?) nuke would devastate a significant area around ground zero, ripping up bunkers completely, caving in walls, etc.
    7. The greatest security for the residents isn't the bunker, it's simply the isolation, and the fact that no one cares about them.
    USD45K seems really steep for a lot of not much at all...

    Great video! This community reminds me of the Greater World Earthship community in Taos, NM! Only, instead of bunkers, they have off-grid, self sustainable adobe homes built with 50% recycled materials. They grow food, collect and filter rainwater, recycle used water, solar panels and battery bank, disposes of your waste, and when built right can be very beautiful and naturalistic. Hence, Im pretty sure you culd break them apart by pulling them off using excavator or a pick up truck. Also filtering system to me seems like it has a lot of flaws, one of them being that its so obvious. Same goes for escape door. Then there is a question about food production in cases like these, ok you do have your stacks, but you will ran out of them in a year lets sat, then what? It is not really self sustainable comunity as he is trying to present it at the beginning. Solar panel also seems off, in case of nuclear winter youd need a manual generator inside the bunker. Also fuel storage is one of the safetly flaws in case something goes wrong and gets on fire... These are some of many things i had throughout the video.

    Hey, Enes. Great video. It was great to see this "different" aspect from what you guys are normally showing us. I hope it was as much fun for you guys to shoot as it was for me to watch. It was definitely a unique take on American life. Sort of a throwback to the fifties and early sixties "cold war" era. Great job. Hope to see more of these "different takes" on American homes.

I mean really - that is so different - but that's exactly why it is so interesting. I had no idea, that such a place existed.

    I was born in Igloo, South Dakota, in 1946. My father was assigned there shortly after my birth, and our family only stayed there a short time. My father told me many years later about the Black Hills Ordnance Depot and the concrete storage units (Igloos). Seems that was where the US government stored all their poison gas ordnance consisting of artillery shells, rockets and bombs during WWII. These consisted of not only gases used in WWI (Picric acid, mustard gas, chlorine gas and others) but gases developed before and during WWII, known as "Nerve Agents." He told me about one poor soldier who had the unfortunate experience of having one of these weapons explode while he was inside one of the igloos. He died pretty much instantly, and since the door to the igloo was open at the time, everything living for around a couple of miles downwind of the igloo also died (fortunately no more humans). I personally would think long and hard about buying one of these igloos for a "bug-out" shelter. The government may have done a great job of cleaning out these bunkers after the bunkers were de-commissioned, but knowing the government as I do, I would have my doubts.

  • @Uberragen21

    This bunker complex looks pretty cool and has some great planning put in place, but I see some potentially significant flaws.
    It's possible the flaws I saw were simply not covered here, but these are my thoughts.
    *1. Lack of trees and vegetation.*
    With no trees nearby, there are no alternative sources of fuel for warmth or building materials. Trees always have and will continue to be a very important source of combustible fuel for warmth, cooking, and habitation for wild animals.
    *2. Lack of forest nearby.*
    As mentioned in the first point, without trees or a forest, there won't be many animals that can be used for food. Stores of long-term dehydrated food is good for storage, but it goes pretty quick if you are feeding more than one or two mouths. You need a good source of wild animals and a nearby forest within walking distance is kind of important. Also, hunting, gathering, and farming is a better long-term solution, supplemented with dehydrated stored food when the first 3 options run low.
    *3. Poor soil quality.*
    This is kind of subjective based upon merely looking at the terrain, but that soil looks like very nutrient poor, good for nothing more than growing grass. Again, a huge part of survival is diversifying food intake and production.
    *4. Lack of water source.*
    Perhaps the water table is not too deep and there is sufficient underground water for a well, but not having a nearby surface water supply is concerning. Running surface water, like a stream or river and a pond or lake is vital to supporting a diverse animal population, both wild and domestic.
    As a side note, I would also consider turning one of those bunkers into a communal food/supply storage facility. Or perhaps make it into a General store where one of the families living there year round manages it and people can buy, sell, and barter items. If anyone lives there full-time, having a General store seems pretty important. The nearest town may be 2+ hours away and won't be much help if things start to shut down in the nation and/or world.

      Seems kind of like a role play to be honest. Or the dude's trying to make a bunch of money off of paranoid people. At least for the time being it all seems like a fine place to live while society is still functioning and modern amenities are still available but doesn't seem really sustainable enough for very long in the event of a societal collapse. It's too reliant on other outside sources.

    • @John-hw3ds
      @John-hw3ds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Also as a former munitions storage depot, it assume its pretty high on an enemies list of places that will get hit. Same with people who refurbish old missile silos. The weapons they have today would probably kill everybody inside pretty easily. Id prefer a cabin in the mountains away from any city and military bases.

    • @awdrifter3394
      @awdrifter3394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I agree. If the idea is to be able to survive a nuclear attack, then the lack of fuel, food, and water will be big problems. Also lack of redundancy. All these fancy electric heating and cooling systems are fine, but when the shit hits you're going to need a primitive wood fired stove, maybe solar or wind to generate some power and battery storage. Also building this on a decommissioned military base is a bad idea, if the enemy is using an old map, they'll nuke it thinking it's still a military base.

      Considering over the last few years we learned that a lot of the babies in this country couldn't even deal with wearing a mask or getting a vaccine or working from home, there's no way they could survive living in these things, especially really living in these things where you can't open the door, can't go shopping for food, never seeing sunlight etc etc. They'd probably take one of their little pea shooters and put it to their head within a week. There's no way I could handle that kind of life. A house without windows is like a meal with no flavors. A landscape without trees and hills is like a family without a spouse or kids... To think that some folks allow irrational fears to push them into that sort of self-imposed poverty is kind of mind-blowing. If Armageddon really happens; if nuclear fallout decimates the planet; if zombies overrun the world... do you really want to stay alive and be there to just to be able to say, "I survived and now I'm going to live the "good" life"??? My gut level says, "if you want to live in that sort of world, go right ahead". In the mean time I'm going to continue living what I consider a normal and rich life for how ever many days it is available. A warm house with natural light and beautiful views out the windows. A property surrounded by forested mountains, lakes and rivers. Hunting and fishing when ever I want. Availability of a huge selection of fresh and wholesome food in well stocked supermarkets that are only a 30 minute drive away. A freezer full of self-procured game meat. Friends that come and go freely without having to deal with fences and chained gates. Barbeques in the yard. The sound of birds singing in the woods. Shudder and worry in your doomsday caves... or live life to the fullest. You're free to choose.

      I’m the same way. I couldn’t handle living out there. I’d either be playing video games every day to distract myself from the ever increasing depression or I’d off myself. If there was a nearby forest, body of water, or any sort of green space, it’d be more manageable and welcoming, but in its current state, it looks like living in an actual apocalypse.

There’s also still old WWI & WWII munitions out there. A bunch of trees exploded about 15 years ago, because they were saturated with TNT over the years. I went on a tour there once, they offer it every few years. Definitely a one of a kind tour, remember there’s a bunch of these bunker complexes all over America.

    Great production Enes! I really liked the background music and the more vlog style. Dante seemed like a cool dude, and I thought it was fun to show a bit of the culture with the practice shooting. Interesting to see a doomsday bunker, though I think it would also be cool to see some of the larger mansions and estates out in the country. I guess I just find myself more interested in the classical style mansions, massive estates, and otherwise unique properties than the ultra-modern glass box ones. Either way you're absolutely killing it, great job! Hope you have a great rest of the week.

    The only problem is that the structures are easily visible, and type of vehicle will be left out in the open. The bunkers are vulnerable from air attacks as well as shelling from an 88 Mike or T-90 Russian tank. A dedicated battalion level force would be able to peel these bunkers open with little resistance. These bunkers are good fall back positions but not permanent FOB.

    I have been watching you for quite a while now and I have to say I really like how you and Mike have evolved the show. I love touring places I will never be able to afford but also videos like this one, the yacht and bus tours and then heading across the pond to tour mansions there it’s all been great. I always look forward to new videos especially the “weird” ones. Keep it up guys.

    Hey Enes, I'm watching since the early days and I absolutely love the variety in the tours. There is just no other channel with this level of quality and detail. My question is... Will there be some more content from Europe? Keep up the great work, thank you for these Videos

    I would EASILY love to see you hosting a travel show! This was so entertaining and interesting! I love your real estate tours, but this was different, and I just have the itch to see you hosting maybe “quirky living situations” or something like that around the US, or world! Kudos to you Enes and team!!!

    Honestly, these bunkers are terribly designed. There are so many design flaws. Here is 3 big ones.
    1. Poor insulation, its a bit of concrete and soil on top, but thats it. If a doomsday scenario, like a nuclear war would happen, you would freeze to death in your bunker. I don't think its nearly thick enough to protect from radiation either.
    2. The generator is outside. If something really bad would happen, your generator is broken. All that fuel you have in storage is now basically useless. And how the bunker is setup now it also makes a point of entry for all that nasty stuff. You can see the 2 holes these guys drilled. You'll also need all that waste heat the generator makes to not freeze in a nuclear winter, even if you have proper insulation. If you have your generator outside heating becomes extremely inefficient. You burn fuel to generate electricity, you lose 80% of that to waste heat from the generator. only 20% of your fuel is creating useful heat for you.
    3. This by far is the biggest one. The filter. Its inside. Are they actually stupid? Did they not think ANYTHING through? The filter should capture all that nasty gunk in the air, like radioactive particles. Sure you don't have radioactive isotopes floating around in your bunker. Instead you have all of them concentrated into a single spot. Which is inside the bunker.
    You don't have a doomsday bunker here, you have a cold dark irradiated concrete coffin.

      @justahamsterthatcodes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nighthawk20000 yeah, that's true. But it's not nearly enough for a nuclear winter. You will burn through you fuel in no time at all with that design. Especially with that location. Where the hell are you going to get more fuel like wood to heat your bunker after you run out?

    I really enjoyed this! But, uh, a couple things.
    I grew up in Rapid City in the 90s and we used to sneak onto this property and run around for fun - we called it Igloo - and it is hella isolated! But Dante suggested it was over an hour from any paved roads, which just isn’t true. At most, it’s a 10-minute drive south of highway 18, which is very much paved. You can check it out yourself, it’s just SW of Edgemont, SD, and VERY noticeable on a map!
    Also, those pictures starting at 0:50 - with the exception of Mt Rushmore - are deeeeefinitely not South Dakota. South Dakota doesn’t have mountains that look anything like those. I hate to be a Negative Nellie, but I gotta represent my home state!
    Again though, great video; I had no idea Igloo was being used for anything like this!

      What Dante actually said was they had not been on a paved road in over in hour......referring to driving around inside the property.....the front gate is approximately 6 miles off the paved road.

    I saw another you tuber tour this place, then it seemed like they just threw in whatever was in the return area at Home Depot. His pitch was getting you into a bunker as cheap as possible. I glad he’s learning more about design and floor plan. It’s a unique novelty home. They were 35000 back then. It’s also worth considering the concrete looks like it has a lot of weather damage in the places where the dirt has eroded.
