  • The Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is linked to the Scottish mainland by the Calmac ferry from Ullapool in the Highlands to Stornoway. The crossing takes 2.5 to 3 hours depending on weather conditions. The day of this crossing was (thankfully) much calmer than usual. If you happen to experience calm conditions and sunny skies then you really are lucky! The ferry Loch Seaforth cruises out of beautiful Loch Broom, past the Summer Isles and out into the North Minch where you might be fortunate enough to see passing cetaceans. I saw a basking shark on this crossing but wasn't fast enough to catch it on camera. As the Point peninsula and the distant mountains of Harris come into view, the ferry slows and manoeuvres into Stornoway harbour. As a young boy I took the old Loch Seaforth to Stornoway from The Kyle of Locharch or Mallaig. Great memories.

Love love love this whole small isle ferry travels vibe.
    My favorite is Shetland.
Saw the season on Netflix and fell in love with the place and life.

So do I! Hoping to get back to Shetland this year for some filming. Excellent though the TV series is, it does make Shetland seem grey all the time. Not true. The sun does shine there!

I've been a few ferry trips to Stornoway however as I hadn't been on the Loch Seaforth I decided to do a return sailing and was impressed by her especially as there was plenty of outdoor seating which Calmac often forget about. I'm slightly worried about the Glen Sannox still being built at Greenock in this respect!

Why in god's name would you play the Irish _Danny Boy_ as the boat approaches Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in *Scotland* ?? Dear god.

Could have done without Danny Boy playing

Gray and depressing. No wonder so many Scotts have Gray as their last name.
