Well done Thank you, I have just purchases a Skoda Fabia, 2012 model as Skoda in there STUPID wisdom decided to leave this vehicle with a PUNTURE repair kit ONLY, no spare wheel MADNESS, I was told the the VW Golf wheels fits the Skoda Fabia, is this TRUE?..can you are any of the good readers please let me know, BIG thank you Ray in Norwich city....

The back plate looks quite clean compared to mine. I had to grind off dust that had effectively turned to stone all over the back plate. Mind you I don't think the drums had been off in 10 years, despite me putting the car in for a full service on several occasions.
If you want a job done properly, do it yourself!

A friend who was a Skoda mechanic told me the rear shoes in normal circumstance pretty much last the life of the car so they probably don’t go near them for a service. I’m only having to change mine at 120k miles because the cylinder blew and the shoes have been contaminated with brake fluid.

@@mistacoz I think the cylinders can leak slowly to start with and cause problems mixing with the dust. In my case there was a lot of build up on the backplates of dust and possibly the brake fluid. So much so that the brakes were sticking and especially the handbrake when left on for more than half a day or so. I suppose even if the shoes are ok, the springs are unlikely to be in good shape after in my case 14 years since the car was new.
In addition, if the shoes are not releasing off the drums, then the fuel economy is going to be quite dire. I suppose many people drive on unaware of their fuel economy being very bad. In my opinion a service should be identifying things like this, but we all know what garages are like. That is where I kind of return to my point that if you want something done properly, do it yourself
