Measure draw length and draw weight to help order arrows and longbows

  • There are a few things people either get wrong or simply don't know how to do that can prevent them from ordering a bow or set of arrows correctly. Mainly their draw length and the weight of their existing bow at their own particular draw length. Hopefully this video will clear a few of these things up and explain why they are important when ordering your archery equipment, particularly the English Longbow.

    This is the single most comprehensive video I’ve yet to see regarding the interconnections between draw length, draw weight, arrow length and even bow length. As usual guys, this was a master class. Thanks for always showing us how it should be done!!

      Awesome, thank you! Nice to have a complimentary comment being the 1st comment! I am sure we will get many others saying we are talking rubbish!

    I LOVE the idea of the older arrow used to measure draw length! Always love catching up on videos on here!

    Thank you! Trying to explain this to my brother has been hell! Now I can show him this! Conveniently he'll be here shortly! I draw all my bows with a release due to nerve damage, and didn't realize that may have a minor effect on draw weight.
    Great vid! Thanks!

      @@longbows not generally, but he now understands why I do what I do. He's a gun guy. Doesn't like that I can outshoot him with a bow; he's pretty good too, for a southpaw.

    Another nice simple to understand video. My only query would be where you measure draw length too. You appeared to measure to the back of the bow. I would have thought true draw length was the distance between the heal of your hand on the belly of the bow and where the string finishes at anchor. Obviously a safe arrow length would usually be about 1 3/4 to 2 inches longer than your draw length. Its not really that critical if you are doing the measuring and checking draw weight as you just draw the bow the same distance on the measuring stick, but it can be confusing when people say they have a certain length draw but in reality its probably an inch or two shorter. Any guidance gratefully received.

      measure to the back of the bow, as we mentioned

    Great information. Once you know the draw length and draw weight you are pulling, how do you select the correct arrow spine? I’ve heard people say it should be spined 10 pounds below the draw weight, others have said 5lb below the draw weight. Is there a good rule of thumb on this? I personally pull 30lb at 26” but not sure what arrow spine would be best? I’m guessing around 25lb? Perhaps it would be a good topic for another video if it’s more in depth?

    Just to make sure I got it right, measuring the arrow to put those red marks have to be from the inside of the knock, where the string will be touching, right ?
    If the club and most of my friends have recurve bows, would the math be accurate enough ? Where should I consider the back of the longbow could be (plunger, end of the riser,a few inch after the grip like the width of a longbow could be) ?
    Thanks for the explanations !

    • @longbows
      @longbows  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yes, the measurements are from the bottom of the nock slot

      Arrow is longer than what?

    First question: "If I have a draw length of 29 inches, what would be the ideal arrow length for me?"
    Second question: "In a traditional English longbow, what is the theoretical difference in millimeters between the upper and lower limbs? I ask because I am from another country and want to build my own bow."

    • @longbows
      @longbows  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We talk about length of arrow based on draw length in the video, please double check the video again. What measurements are you talking about, the length of the limbs? the distance from belly to string? etc
