The "Ivy League" schools were nicknamed that because of the ivy vines that were growing on the sides of the buildings at the 4 different universities... due to how old the school buildings are the walls were completely covered in ivy...
Another thing about minoring in subjects in the US is that it also provides you an opportunity to study something you genuinely enjoy at an established institution, like a passion, but it's not necessarily practical to study it as your major because the job market for it is not that great. For example, I know a lot of people studying something STEM-related, like engineering or computer science, but they might have a passion for fine arts, or photography, or psychology, so they major in engineering or CS, and then minor in that one subject they really like. Most of the time when you're applying for jobs, your major matters way more to the company anyway. So the minor can be COMPLETELY unrelated to what your major area of study is. A lot of students take advantage of it to continue doing what they love, or to learn something they're really interested in, whilst also having a secure major so they can find a job after graduation :-)
I suppose here in the UK we only really do what find interesting, you’re never just going to do a subject because it would be good for a job - especially because that is the only thing you’re doing
My textbooks for my classes this year were all about $80 each so 4 $80 books but every single bbn one was literally an ebook because of the quarantine. Like I damn well know y'all ain't making those pixels on my screen so why in the flying fuck is a non physical copy of a college text book so fucking expensive. There is literally no paper or binding involved in this book. Why the shit does it cost more then my electric bills.
UK university: three expensive years US university:four eye wateringly expensive years. Then you find out that you have to do another two to get an MA to actually compete in the job market.
The vote for the English to pay tuition fees was only passed due to Scottish MP's voting in favour of it while the English MP's did not get a vote in the devolved Scottish parliament on Scottish student tuition fees. Thats fucked up.
$12000 is on the cheaper scale of uni actually, the good ones are several times that- Harvard uni (ivy league) for example is about 67-68 thousand average for tuition, room, board, and fees; Yale uni is about 51.4 thousand [out of pocket prices] - of course some colleges/uni will help pay if your families are low income [ Harvard does] and scholarships can cover a bunch
I am American and just spent my second year of uni in the UK and I feel like this video was like every first conversation I would have with any other uni student I met abroad haha
And here in Slovenia it's completely free + you can also get a scholarship if you're a good student or if your family has low income, so basically everyone can go to university if they want to :)
Germany. It varies between universities, but I guess everyone lies within a bandwith 200-450€ per semester. For what? you might ask. For public transport, student union and administration fees. Not for tuition (no fees) or books (libraries can suck but are for free. And textbooks are certainly cheaper than in the US e.g. my most expensive one was for macroeconomics 80€). Printing not included, but cheap (I can print at the university library for 5 ct per page.)
This is so interesting to watch. I did an American exchange for one year at uni and it was so overwhelmingly different! The work was easier but because testing was more constant you had to always be up on stuff rather than cramming for an essay at the end of term. I also quite liked how there were more fun activities happening because it couldn't all be centred around drinking.
TBH not even sure if Durham is the third oldest in England. As for old Scottish universities, iirc there were no universities in Scotland until the 15th century. Oxford, Cambridge date back to the 11th c. So not a pissing contest anyone outside England will win except perhaps Italy and Spain.
@@jonathaneddy I think the University of Karueein in Morocco is the oldest university in the world. The University of Bologna is the oldest university in Europe.
@@hillarywoo4977 Yep, although there is some argument that the University of Constantinople is older (though now defunct). Oxford, as a university dates from 1254 (before that it was just a church school), but Cambridge was granted its charter earlier in 1231. Durham is the third oldest in England, university status granted in 1832.
I'm weak at the fact that they get like full scholarships from doing sports wow like the person could be pure stupid but still get a full scholarship 😂
Not really. You have to be amazing (one of the best in the state/country) to get a full ride, and then it has to be to a D1 school. D2 and D3 schools might give you a scholarship but it wont be a full ride. Athletes who aren't the best have to try extremely hard in academics to be competitive with others in their league
It's because practice and training take so much time they aren't able to have a part time job to help pay their way through school. At The Ohio State University, though they're not recruited from high schools, members of the marching band get full scholarships because band practice takes up 30 hours/week.
They deserve it. Those kids work their asses off being the best public face of The Ohio State University and it goes so far beyond halftime performances. As much as we love our football team (and Buckeye Nation is known as one of the most enthusiastic and loyal fan bases anywhere), we really do love the marching band even more... when the band is introduced as "The Pride of the Buckeyes" those aren't just hollow words. The university gives scholarships to 715 student athletes, but they give none to the marching band. The band scholarships are funded through public donations and an endowment created 35 years ago by the band's alumni organization.
Awesome video! Just a note, as a college student at a very different university in the US, I want to point out that things can be really different at other universities. Thinking about topics like grading, requirements, athletics, funding, etc., the items mentioned here aren’t necessarily all generalizable to schools across the whole nation.
Hi Jack! this was SUCH an interesting video and really enjoyed it :) I would like to point out that there are some differences that aren't highlighted in terms of Scotland (of which has some of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK!) For instance, Scottish students do not pay tuition fees. The Scottish Government pays our tuition fees directly to the university themselves (yay for devolution!). Also, we have a very different education system - the term 'college' is not used as to mean '6th form'. Rather, we call the final year of school as '6th year'. 'College' is actually often used to describe local education facilities post-school education such as apprenticeship courses and so on. Just thought it might be some useful insight and a friendly reminder that 'british' and 'UK' actually extends much further than England and Wales :)
Also in the United States: technically, if a institution of higher learning is called a "university" it has graduate programs as well as undergraduate programs. For the most part, "colleges" just give out undergraduate degrees. I went to college 500 miles--within the same state--away from home (California).
You know, seeing this makes me really happy to live in Brazil, like, I'm a college student in a public university, I got a "frat week", and thankfully most of the textbooks I may use in my graduation I have on my uni's library

@@KryaDiere The textbooks are often written by the professor teaching the course, so since they get royalty payments from the sales, they will know how many copies have been sold. If not enough, there will be investigations.
At the end of the course you can sell it back to the bookstore for a percentage of the purchase price - IF the book will be used again the next term (often they aren't). Used books can generally be purchased for about half price, IF they are available.

Evan you should make sure to qualify what you say about colleges since a lot of stuff seems specific to your school/not generalized for all schools. For example (I went to a college in the US), we only needed to take 50% of the coursework to get a minor and we only needed a language credit, a quantitative credit (math) and 25% of our credits outside of our major to graduate. Also my college had sports but they weren't really a big deal. The students doing sports were there because they academically got into the school and decided to do sports. It depends on the school.
I went to a private university in Norway. My whole six year theology degree (three year bachelor's, two year master's, and one year seminary) cost me approximately £3,000. Not £3,000 per year but combined.
One of the reasons textbooks are so expensive in the US is because the 4 textbook publishing houses: Pearson, Wiley, McGraw-Hill, Cengage own 80% of all the market. They often publish the slides and many professors use their supplementary material which requires a 1-time use access code, driving up the cost. The cost has risen 1000% since the 70's for textbooks. Some schools even have contracts with these publishers that they will meet certain quota of enrolling students with these expensive access codes and if they fail to meet their quotas the school's access to content goes up. These companies are vultures.
Great stuff, so much more insightful and accurate than most US v UK college vids. I've gone thru the US system to the grad level, Ivy League and public both, was a lab instructor, and later a technician so know it well. A major university ("Unie") may have 20-75K students, it's dozen Colleges maybe 2-12K each, and Departments in the 200-2000 range, whilst each department are 3-8 Majors of 50-300 students each, and in grad school Research Groups within the Dept. of maybe 5-20 profs and grad students. That is a five level system at it's best. I went to a school with 12 people in Blueberry Genetics, for example (yes, really). It's will get specialized very fast in the US but that attracts people around the world to US programs.
In Scotland I’d say 90% of people stay at home for uni. It’s interesting how it’s such a different culture in England. Personally I want to move away but I am by far in the minority.
Yea it seems people only move in Scotland if they have to, to actually go to University as they are mostly in the central belt, I travel an hour to get to uni because I'm not in everyday so its cheaper.
I still think freshers week was one of my fave weeks at uni, although it seems kind of scary partying with people you don’t know I kind of loved how new everything was
Evan saying 50% is only half right isn't true because that's usually for essay based questions, whereas in the US it seems from what Evan has said it's more multiple choice based
That is not entirely right. We have multiple types of questions including essay based ones. You get graded on a percentage of 100 no matter what form of questions asked.
Evan often says "In the US, this happens" but it's really just his experience. I had some multiple choice exams, but many more of the "show your work" variety. Also, the required classes he listed for "in Anerica" should really have been "at my school" because not all schools have the same requirements.
Jennifer Pearce 100% agree, my school has 0 gen ed requirements, and many schools only have distributional requirements (e.g. a history class, a philosophy class, etc., instead of specific required classes like he listed)
If you tried to customize a grad cap in the UK they'd try to arrest you for destruction of property. We were told strictly to not throw our caps under any circumstances. We ignored this, naturally.
@@jenniferpearce1052 That sucks. It's pretty common in my area to take the tassle off the cap and use it at a keychain, or to hang it from the rearview mirror of your first car, or mother will frame it ect...
There's no "fresher's week", but we do have syllabus week, which is basically the first week of each semester. The course work is pretty light during that time so a lot of people just party hard before the semester really kicks in.
I rememeber in my University in Barcelona (half public-half private) we all complained about how expensive the books were: it was 54€ for the folder, the planner and ALL the books.
Attending a private university in America means you're either coming from a rich and/or famous family, or you got a full ride scholarship. Also, a private university is more or less a school that's privately funded. For example: in America, your state schools (i.e. Ohio State University, Kent State University, etc.) and your community colleges are government funded, therefore tuition is a hell of a lot cheaper, but the school is also expected to follow government rules. A private school is paid for entirely by the student population's tuition, and they aren't held to the same "codes of conduct" that public schools are. The best example is the fact that a private school can deny your admission based on race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. and they can't be sued because of it due to being independent from the government.
Tina Z. Yeah, the ivy league schools are private, hence why they’re so exclusive and hard to get into too. I come from a low income family, and Princeton reached out to me and offered a full ride scholarship even though I never expressed interest in going. Unfortunately, my major is Equine Studies which, despite all having Equestrian sports teams, none of the Ivy League schools offer as a degree, so that was that...

Durham is NOT the third oldest uni in the UK!! It's the third oldest in England. Scotland has four unis that are older than durham lol
TBH not even sure if Durham is the third oldest in England.
As for old Scottish universities, iirc there were no universities in Scotland until the 15th century. Oxford, Cambridge date back to the 11th c. So not a pissing contest anyone outside England will win except perhaps Italy and Spain.

@@bob_._. Scholarships to be in a Marching Band. I thought I'd heard of everything. Obviously not.
Their academics have to qualify too lol😂😂😂
“What does collage mean to you?”
“Depression, anxiety...”
Jack is listening with so much interest! 😁
Also in the United States: technically, if a institution of higher learning is called a "university" it has graduate programs as well as undergraduate programs. For the most part, "colleges" just give out undergraduate degrees.
I went to college 500 miles--within the same state--away from home (California).

It's free PE when you don't take one anymore.
I live in the Uk but my friend lives in America. Her college fees are $72,000 a year!!!!
Stephen Sheppard yes they generally do although have to pay the Loan back on all of this and it never gets wipedn
I went to a private university in Norway. My whole six year theology degree (three year bachelor's, two year master's, and one year seminary) cost me approximately £3,000. Not £3,000 per year but combined.
An equivalent education at a standard university, though, would cost about £600. Again, not £600 per year but combined.
Personally I want to move away but I am by far in the minority.
hey! Well the SAAS is probably a *big* reason why. All luck with going where you want to be :)
Yea it seems people only move in Scotland if they have to, to actually go to University as they are mostly in the central belt, I travel an hour to get to uni because I'm not in everyday so its cheaper.
I actually moved cities and that seemed to be common for anyone who wanted to Study in Dundee or Abertay University.
You certainly clarified a lot of my questions about the differences of the schools in the Uk and Us thank you so much.
I would have said "college" is junior college, and university is an actual university. But college is the term used for both institutions.
I still think freshers week was one of my fave weeks at uni, although it seems kind of scary partying with people you don’t know I kind of loved how new everything was
oh I absolutely loved it too, but I think there’s a weird pressure to love it and so those who don’t enjoy themselves feel immediately displaced

Can't believe you guys did a collab! Yay! Great video!
This is so pure. “Are solo cups a thing? A jocks real?”

Jack: that's expensive.
Me: Oh that's really cheap, prices must have gone up.
This is the video I never thought I needed but loved so much.
I really don't want to say it, but here in Austria, unless you go to a private one, universities are free.
What's a private university?
CurseOfTheEnder the ivy league schools are also private- some also help greatly if you come from a low income family
Must be nice
It also helps that our country is sooo huge! 350 miles is still in the same state. Far away is more than 1000+ miles away for us..
