- This is How They Treat You in Cambodia!
In this video I took a night bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap.
To look for the bus ticket I went to Central market in Phnom Penh. Walking around the market I found some food to eat. I found a unique dish. I was kind of pancake with some bean sprouts , onions and some meat. Also seller add some sauce and chili. It was very delicious.
Then I asked some people if they know where to buy bus ticket to Siem Reap. First couple guys where offering me a tuk tuk ride somewhere, but I was not sure where they want to take me. Then one more guy came by and take me to some drivers, but they were driving cars, not buses. Later he took me to bus tiket office near central market. I paid $18 for a night sleeper bus. I was expecting the bus to be a little luxury for this kind of price. But it turned out it was the cheapest sleeper bus. Basically the guy from ticket office over charge me. Or scammed. Also he said I will arrive in Siem Reap about 5am. But 2am bus was already in Siem Reap.
Then I went to buy energy drink, talked with the shop staff across the road a little. He said that this bus ticket should cost around $7 or max $10. Then he asked tuk tuk driver near by to take me to my wanted location. Driver took me to the Guest house. Guest house was full, so I had to wait till the late morning to check in. At night I slept on a wooden bed in the lounge area.
In the morning I woke up and headed to find a coffee straight away. just a few minutes away I found a nice little shop that was selling soft drinks and some doughnut. I had a nice cup of iced coffee and a chocolate doughnut. After that I headed back to guesthouse to wait for my check in time.

That Cambodian pancake scene was quite funny but i’m glad no one tried to scam you. Also, I thought $18 for a 6 hr trip was quite reasonable but that’s just me.

Thank you for your positive feedback. Probably I made the assumption of being scammed too quick. Maybe a little miss understanding with the local made me confused as well. Anyways, that will be a lesson for me for the next time. Now I know more about prices, it will be easier for the next trip.
About the language, yes, you don’t have to speak local language, sometimes smile tells more than the words. 😊🙏
$18 for a bus ride is not a scam. When I went last year I paid $20/person for a smaller private charter shuttle. There were 10 of us. The locals tried their best to help you. I don’t understand why foreigners expect the locals to automatically speak English. Did you learn a few Khmer words while you were there, the official language of Cambodia? I commend you for taking such a trip.
I guess I have to learn few more words in Khmer, O have no problem if people don’t speak English. I always try to find a way to communicate. Also it’s always good to take extra precautions when traveling in any country.

Next time you do these videos I want to see you speak a few words in Khmer, "how much," "delicious," "what's your name," and "how long have you been working here." These are the same questions you've asked over and over in English. I feel you will have even a better connection with people if you try to speak language of the land. Cambodians are very friendly, welcoming and eager to please. They will be very impressed.

the first group you encountered was Couriers they deliver packages to different areas in the country....the second group was Private Taxis you can get to SR in about 4-5hours...

Actually $18 is about right for an overnight bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. I paid $16 and I am cambodian, depending on what location you got your ticket from, the price for the overnight bus run anywhere from $16 to $18. That local guy telling you is not correct, no way you can get an overnight sleep bus for $10. Now if you take a regular car pooling with some other passengers or a van it runs about $7 or $8

Thank you for your brief comment. I always like to explore new places and decide for myself what is it like. Cambodia is a good Country. I met many friendly people, tried delicious food. If something is overpriced or I am being scammed, it’s still fine, it’s part of the adventure, this way I learn to be more cautious for the future situations. Also it can happen in any country.

I don't think bus price is a scam at all, prices range from U$10 to $18 , off course Sleeping bus is more $ than sitting bus price
Cambodia is kind of crazy but I really like the people. Not sure if you were scammed or not. Need more information about the bus. Sleeper bus costs more.

I think 7$ ride she talked about is a minivan and normal bus probably around 10-15$ already, so you can guess a sleeping bus price.
When I arrived to Siem Riep, I went to local shop, the guy who worked there saw the bus. He said bus should cost max $10. It was the most basic bus.

You didn’t get scam. Remember, different companies have different prices. You pay a bit more for a more comfortable ride. Especially, when you get over night sleeping.
Probably it’s true. It’s just I was expecting the bus to be a lot better for that price. It was the most basic night bus I have seen so far in Cambodia. But I guess it’s still fine.
I could be wrong, but I don't think you were scammed by the bus company. Usually the price is around $12-16 depending on the company if I am not mistaken. The sleeping bus cost more than the regular bus because you are taking more space.
I was saying my thoughts after the guy from the shop said I paid too much. I’ve been using night buses in Vietnam for many times, for this price you get a luxury sleeper bus, for the same distance. Unless in Cambodia is more expensive.
@@MrABroad You should asked that same person the location of the $7 night bus and you can verify. If it is $7, you can let others know about this bus company. Yes, Cambodia cost a little bit more than Vietnam, in general about 25% more. Also even if they did take advantage by charging you more, the correct word would not be "scammed", it would be "overcharged". Scam means a fraudulent or deceptive operation, that would mean you paid the money but later the bus company disappeared and no bus came to take you to Siem Reap.
@bongchan531 Ok, let’s get the things clear first. It was probably my mistake using a word scam. Hope I am correct saying this. The guy that said it’s way cheaper was Cambodian. For me, personally, it looked little pricy. What did the locals pay for that bus?
@@MrABroad I am not sure what the locals pay, I think a long time ago I paid maybe $13, but if that guy said it was $7, ask him the location so you can confirm. Another note, I know you mean well, but please try not to tip. This will plant the idea that foreignors will give extra money and then the locals might expect extra money in the future. For example, for a local, once they haggle for a final, that is the final price. For a foreignor, the seller will expect the final price plus a tip. Tipping is a western phenomenon, and even some western people don't like it, especially now that many businesses in the west mandatorily force you to pay high tipping prices.
I just got to Phnom Penh a couple days ago and today I went to the bus company place next to the night market. I asked them for the prices, and they told me the small van and day bus is $10, and the night bus is $15.

Two weeks in Cambodia , I drank like half a bottle of water, the rest I drank coconut juice the whole two weeks I was there. Usually Cambodian people use medicines from France.

I have been to Cambodia 5 times Great experience without problem... I have been to Thailand 5 times. Each time , we got ripe off by tuk/taxi drivers, airport worker pretend to carry our luggage and refused to return, ripped off at royal palace... We don't want to return to Thailand.

Scams are common and more severe in Thailand, if you use proper intelligence you cant be victim of scamming. Cambodia does not have issues such as mass shootings, suicide bombings, gun fights, tourist rapes, or violent attacks on tourists like in Thailand.
U have plenty of places in ur initial place to get a ticket for a night bus to SR!
Probably there are, but this was my first time buying a bus ticket and I did not know any places at all.

To go to Siemreap, WE take a bus AT night market near thé river bank. But a few bus only still run because more cambodian peole use their own car.
Or you Can take a bus at Ore Sey market, bus comptany capitol

If you have hard time speaking with Cambodian, find help from students or youngsters to translate for you. Most of Cambodian youngsters speak English well, Especially in Phnom Penh.

A lot bus scam in PP be careful I was there back in 2002 I took the fast boat to siem riep and deluxe bus back to PP I enjoy the fast boat better because the road is bad back then better now the scenery on river Mekong and tonle sap is great.

The bus seem right I paid for the regular bus to Battambang for 10-11$ .. yours is bed this why motel I pay 10$ -15 a night
I thought it was little expensive. I had many busses in Vietnam, for this price it would be luxury sleeper bus. But this one was the most basic. But who knows, maybe it’s the right price.

Why are many of your commentators from the eastern border acting hysterical for your “safety” ? You were not in any danger of the locals - the locals were just as clueless about what you really wanted for travel. The options to travel to Siem Reap was private van, bus, or sleeper bus. There were many options.
The proper thing to do, as if you were in any other country, is to ask a tuk tuk driver to take you to the ticket counter to purchase a bus pass.
Btw, you shouldn’t mistaken locals willingness to help you out on a whim as if they got nothing better to do!
Btw $15 is almost standard rate for regular day bus. Sleeper bus only additional $3 is a good price.
I only said that bus should be cheaper because that is what other locals told me while I was in Phnom Penh and also in Siem Riep. But that was after I bought a ticket. But it’s still fine I guess.
I think that’s what tuktuk drivers wanted to tell me, that they can take me to bus ticket office. Because at the hotel and some other people, say that I can buy ticket and get the bus from Central market. That is what made the whole thing confusing.
@@MrABroad In 2010s the standard price of taking a bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap was about $15 too. I don’t remember sleeper buses offered that time, but prices seem to not have increased on bus fares in the last decade.

Ammh…… plan out a head a little bit might make your visit to Cambodia a little smoother. The transport infrastructure in Cambodia can not yet be compare to the high standards of Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand. Traveling to Vietnam and Lao is also similar to Cambodia in term of availability on their public transport options. Adventurous traveling experiences must also come with safety too. Hoping you won’t be getting any other scamming experience like what you had just shown us further along your trip.
As of the transport in Vietnam, I am very familiar with it. I know prices quite well, there are plenty of options, this is why I sometimes compare prices because they suppose to ne be similar.
