The original context is gay, and if you look at this video and listen to the lyrics, there is practically no way for this to be a friendship thing. "Who am I now in this world without her?" "We fought like it was all some silly game over her, who she'd choose.... after all those years, I never thought I'd lose". The fact of the matter is that if Natalie were male, it would be obvious that this was conveying a ship between Natalie and Emilie, and that Natalie was a sort of "rival" to Gabriel. I understand it doesn't appear this way in the show, however, for this particular animatic, you cannot deny the gay

And when Emily died she stuck around, for Adrien not Gabriel, though she did re fall in love with him. Damn "Now I have to be there for her son" really sums up her whole life purpose.
