On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 6-30-24.
We're looking at a 1956 Packard Clipper Super Hardtop in Dover White / Corsican Black Paint.
The car comes with the 352 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Bruce Grabenkort. Bruce’s had this car since 2011. Bruce shares he had a connection to Packard as his Grandfather had bought Packard’s since the 1930’s. He would remember those fun rides, and when he the money for a “weekend car” he bought a Packard to remember his Grandfather.
ENJOY!

Packard was the Rolls Royce of American cars! Thank you for posting another great video!!! 😊
👍👏
Packards were a high quality vehicle. This one is a testament to their workmanship. Very nice car. Thanks Lou!
Happy to share this "high quality vehicle" with you :-) You're welcome John!
The ‘56 Packard Clipper is one of the most beautiful Packards ever built. Sadly, the last of these incredibly well designed and built automobiles. This two door is absolutely the “cats meow”
Wonderful car loaded with only the best. Trunk and treats to boot! Love this machine! Thanks Lou 👍
Hi John, Happy to read "This two door is absolutely the “cats meow” " :-) NICE! You're welcome, Lou
I’m first again! I’ve mentioned before family members owned Packards!
WINNER!
I rode in a couple of Packards : a 1953 & a '56 4 -door model ! That was a once in a lifetime event ! You rarely ever see one on our nations highways today . Happy Motoring ! Mark E. Switzer 7:53
Hi Mark, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Packard rides :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I had a couple of these cars. By 1956 Packard was circling the drain. They had gone past their glory days. I have three 1947's which I would classify as the last great year for a great American car manufacturer.

1948 Was the end of the Classics era.
I always liked 53 Packards best the year before it became Studebaker Packard and they still had the gas pedal starter.
Packard Clipper, an appropriate name for the boat those Packards were back then 🤣 I love the "trunk of treats" every time 💚 I now know more about some cars because of the trunk 😎
Thanks Lou, I'm still a big fan 👍👍✌️
Hi Pat, Happy to share this "boat" with you :-) All ABOARD! Glad to read you're enjoying the trunk and treats when I have them. You're welcome, Lou
Packard "Ask The Man Who Owns One" 😍😍😍😍😍 Thanks Lou!
Hi MotorTranz, That's correct :-) You're welcome, Lou
What a beautiful old Packard! The 56 is what started my old car obsession when I was 8 years old in 1984. There was a light green one parked in someone’s yard in the small Kentucky town I grew up in . I was enthralled with the fins! I remember asking my dad to stop the car so I could snap a photo of it. I never knew what ever became of that Packard. I hope it was rescued by a collector and put back on the road. Anyways, I will always have a soft spot for the 56 Clipper. Thanks Lou for sharing this.
Hi Chris, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the light green car in KY :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
What a beautiful and unique car. I'm a big fan of chrome, so this car looks just beautiful to me!
Hi Debbie, I like chrome too. Happy to read "this car looks just beautiful to me!" :-) Lou
Really nice car Lou. Great backstory from Bruce as it pertains to his grandfather. Real shame that Packard went out of business a few years later. It demonstrates what happens when a storied company is mismanaged. Thanks for putting this out there.
Hi Kevin, Happy to read you enjoy this "Really nice car" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
It's classy, yet conservative, but the end result is a great looking car! I love the fond memories Mr. Grabenkort mentioned about enjoying Packards and roadtrips with his grandfather in one, too. What a great upbringing. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, My pleasure sharing this "great looking car!" with you and a nice story too :-) You're welcome, Lou

Lou as you know the Packard was the creme of the crop. What an iconic American automobile. Thank you for sharing.

What a striking 1956 Packard Clipper Super Hardtop in the sunlight in that classic Black and White combination! The chrome plating on this model looks fantastic, especially on the trim, such as the space-age symbol on the hood, the edge lines, or the large, sleek bumpers (the front one with two impressive missile-shaped protrusions). The interior is beautiful, with the same exterior color scheme for the seats and upholstery, along with elaborate chrome work for the instrument panel or the steering wheel, the latter with an elegant Clipper rudder symbol. And as usual, the surprises found in the trunk in the form of beautifully preserved brochures, manuals, or catalogs were excellent. It was a nice day to be traveling those pleasant, relaxing roads... Congratulations to Mr. Grabenkort for this extraordinary vehicle, which, in turn, brings back great memories of his grandfather! Best regards, Lou!
Hi Jaime, Happy to share this "striking" car with you :-) My pleasure reading what you see :-) Lou
Another beautiful mid 50’s Packard. One of the Last great Packards.
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you appreciate the looks of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
Wow, Lou! That car has such presence! Simply amazing looking car. It says 50's without being excessive like many Mopars and GM products did at that time. Lou NEVER ceases to amaze me with the vehicles he showcases. Outstanding!

Nice Lou! I love the Packards of the mid 50’s . Sam Barris used those taillights in a 53 Buick custom he built in 1958. I’ve proudly owned a 1955 Caribbean and a Clipper hard top.
Thanks Lou, great memories

The Clipper is one of my favorite 50's cars. What a fine example this one is. Last of an era. Thank you Lou, this video did bring my heart rate down!

Thanks again Lou. Great episode.
You're welcome Quincee 33.
What an incredible car.
I’m trying to think, what other cars were labeled after ships.
Webster’s Dictionary
Clipper: a fast sailing ship
Corvette 1: a naval sailing ship smaller than a frigate.
Sometimes a label can be it’s own worst enemy. The French used this term corvette in the 17th century.
Between 1953-1957, 14,446 Chevy Corvettes were produced.
Compared to the Ford Thunderbird, between 1955-1957, 21,380 T-Birds were produced.
1953-2024;1,560,000 Corvette
1955-2005 4.4 million T-Birds
Beautiful car Lou!

In 1965 a friend of mine bought three Packards from the local Gulf station: A 53 400 Sedan, a 53 300 Convertible and a 52 Clipper 4-door. All for $40. They were all complete and running. Nobody wanted them
Every detail is beautiful.
Nice :-)
Lou, any time there’s a day with a Packard video on your channel, that’s all I need to make my day great.

It’s a shame that they did not make it but the competition was clearly fierce.

You're welcome Matt. Happy to read you have a 56 Packard :-) NICE!
The two tone paint jobs they put on these older cars looked cool.
Nice :-)
Love it!!
NICE!!
Beautiful car and it's sad that it took the motoring public 60+ years to appreciate it. In the late 1960s these Packards (along with others) were sitting in "jalopy corners" of used car lots to be picked for a pittance. Glad to see the survivors.
Hi John, Happy to read you enjoy this "Beautiful car" :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, Lou
I don't know a lot about Packards...This will be a fun learning experiece for me! As I was watching I said to myself, I don't see the name Packard, just Clipper...then you asked the question and I remembered this was a model range that competes with Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Mercurys of its day! When I was young, I used to think that a Clipper was a Lincoln! Great smooth sounding engine. It doesn't appear the trunk locks? Anyone could spin the Helm wheel and the trunk would open? Not too safe. Beautiful dash!!! That was a very fun ride. Thanks, Lou.
Hi Brian, Happy to learn right along with you :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou

Isn't the top line Packard engine in '56 a 374? Awesome either way.

I made some similar Arms observations such as you did Lou. The motor was so smooth. I would’ve liked to of seen a little more information on the motor as far as suspects you commented on the ride being so smooth and I always felt the Packers were such a well engineered car anyway, thanks for the report and the test and I never knew before what year they put the V8 in a Packard so that was intriguing also❤
Hi James, My pleasure sharing the smooth sounding and ride of this car with you :-) Lou
Packard was the USSR dictator Stalin's favorite car. His buddy FDR gave him one as a gift. Later he had his armor plated limousines made based on Packards. There is a video you can watch on TH-cam of the final annual military parade in communist East Berlin in October 1989 celebrating the 40th anniversary of the DDR. There are two black open parade limousines that look very similar to this Packard. This gentleman's car is beautiful and the instrument panel is a work of automotive art.

Very nice car! I found three places the Packard name was on that car. Lou, you pointed out the body by Packard badge on the seat and were saying it was the only place. I was fixing to argue that when you went back to the plate on the door frame. The other place I saw it was under the hood. It was on that oil filter canister. I expected to find it on more things under the hood, and I am surprised that I didn't. There is a man who lives in my neighborhood, who owns an auto service and repair shop. He specializes in working on classic cars. I saw cars dating from the 1920s through to the early seventies at his shop. He has two cars from the 50s I see at his house on occasion, a 56 Buick and an early to mid 50s Packard.
Hi Daniel, Happy to share this "Very nice car!" with you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing what you noticed, Lou
Nothing like being at the helm of a Packard. Love the maritime helm symbol at the trunk opening, on the steering wheel center piece, and didn't i see one on that pillar by the back window, so there would be one on each side. Looks real fine in the black and white, especially with that interior. Sure looks like that would be the factory colors both in and out. . . :>/
Hi Dr. Candor, Happy to share this car with you :-) I agree, looks good, Lou
Great car!
Nice :-)
A Gorgeous Car! And that engine was tight! When it started up it sounded like a sewing machine! Hell I grew up seeing cars like that but I always thought they were Ford's? But what I love about watching these videos is your camera work and the detail because it just makes you appreciate the workmanship that went into these cars of the 50's! Some might've cost the same as a house or more back then? But you were getting your money's worth! unlike these no personality plastic overpriced cars & trucks of today! As I was told once by a Pontiac Salesman! You can sleep in your car! But you can't drive your house! CMTFU! You video beautiful cars! But that car was a real sweet One! The Black & White was elegant but sporty at the same time! The drive was smooth like a baby ass! Nice! I Also got to see a little of back home! A twofer! I miss that part of Illinois! Surveyed in a lot of those small towns in upper Illinois & Wisconsin! Great camera work Lou! Be Cool!

There is more than a “liter” of style in this baby! What a great Clipper to ride in as it zips down
the road. A request for the owner, please, think about removing the stickers for the dash,
they take rake away from the car’s beauty.

A "cheap" Packard was still a very nice car.
You're right.
Nice 😊
Hi Michael, Happy to read "Nice" :-) Lou
Buick and Packard had a lot of similarities in the 40s and 50s. The only other wheel that fits a Buick is Packard. They used the same bolt pattern. The hoods were hinged to open to the side through 1950 on Packards and they both had straight 8s although OHC and flathead.
Hi g bridgman, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
This was the last year of the Packards. The company failed as they brought in a succession of idiots to run the company after the CEO was found to have a girlfriend. It was a different age -
I have a 1955 super , they were the most advanced car of that day. Torsion bar suspension and the most powerful V8 in a stock automobile. In 1956 the 'Executive' was the top of the line, the 'Super' slightly down market but still full featured. Beautiful example in really nice original condition. Thanks Lou !
100 % Correct I envy you !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have read that the average age of a Packard board member was 70 years old. There was no "young blood" at all in upper management.
I like Packards, but Chrysler had the most powerful engine in 56.
@@garymckee63 The 1956 Imperial 354 Hemi had 280 H.P.. The '56 Packard 374 c.i. had 290 H.P. and Caribbean 374 with dual quad carbs had 310 H.P.

Packard was competing with Buick and even used the same name on this model: Super. Packard went to a lot of trouble and expense to totally redesign their cars for 1955 but only produced what you see here for 2 years. The merger with Studebaker didn't help them. The tail lights and wheelcovers were used for another year in the "Stude-Packards" I think that's what they're called, but they were just glorified Studebakers. I knew a guy who always had Packards. He bought the last one in 1956 and kept it until he died. I didn't know how the trunk lid opened on these, so I learned something. I like how the ignition switch is labeled "Starter." Packards had gas pedal start, same as Buicks, through 1953.
Hi g bridgman, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
The very best of american cars . . . before they fall in Studebakerland !
"The very best of american cars" High praise.
Packard started going down fast when it brought out the homely bathtub style cars in the late 40s and early 50s ,
Also they were late to the game bringing out v-8 models.
@@bextar6365
Perfectly ok ! Packard was most busy with production of Merlin engines. So they lost the thread of peace time desires.
@bextar6365
The V8 structure was not to be a future standard, just a GM trick for Cadillac big roomy luxury eye-catching tanks ! Packard produced the best 6 cyl. L-head in the world.
Nice

I was in a junk yard 30 yrs. ago. At age 20 my shin found a bumper bullet the hard way it was a Cadillac. Similar to hitting your shin into a trailer hitch.
OUCH!
💯👍😎👍💯
:-)
Their first V8? That's surprising. Regardless, it's a sweet ride
Happy to share this "sweet ride" with you :-)
These couldn’t have cost Packard much less to build than the senior models. And then, in addition to the Clippers and the senior Packards, they introduced the Executive models mid-year, as the lack of the Packard nameplate seemed to hurt sales. Packard would be reduced to “Packardbakers” after 1956.
Hi Sean, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
Did this car have the torsion bar suspension? I believe it was optional on all but the top of the Clipper liñe, where it was standard. Every inch of this car shouts "quality!" Thanks, Bruce and Lou!
Hmmm, didn't video the bottom of the car so I'm not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share. You're welcome Tom.
Wasn’t it just the self leveling Torsion Aire ride that was optional? I can’t imagine they’d have had separate suspensions in the same cars.
@@seed_drill7135 I believe they did. On the lower line Clippers, I think they used the coils in front and leaf springs in the rear. Could be wrong, but that's what I've read.
It just occurred to me that 1950s Packard had made the same mistake GM did in the late 80s. Too late they tried to make "Clipper" a lesser division in Packard Corp, but it looked too much like the senior models (or vice-versa). Brings to mid the late 80s Lincoln commercial where the valets couldn't tell the difference between the Buicks and the Cadillacs. It was already over by '56. Cadillacs looked like CADILLACS in 1956.

Did this car have torsion bar or regular suspension?
Hmmm, not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge.
@@loucostabile In 1955 Clipper Super and Deluxe, according to Packard literature, came with conventional suspension; coil springs in front, leaf springs in the rear. Clipper Custom had torsion bar suspension. In 1956 all Clippers were "offered" with torsion bar suspension, so maybe it was an option? Literature doesn't specify that.
In 1956 Clipper was its own make apart from Packard.

I would have been able to moderately be happy with this car, even though I most loved the Caribbean. More affordable. But in reality I wouldn’t have been able to afford any of them, since I was only 14 yo! Hahahaha
Hi David, A 14 year old with a Packard.....that would be a good story :-) Lou
I'm surprised that more Packards weren't equipped with
Factory air conditioning, after all Packard invented a/c. I realize that a/c was quite expensive at that time.
...this one just doesn't have it.
Lou you have the hood up and you are looking at the engine but no curiosity as to the horsepower. Also is it a 6 0r 12 volt. Where did he find this car and why a Packard in the the 50's when they were on their last leg??
Bill, great questions, Lou
So, I'm thinking that lighter is stated as being optimistic. Use this device and your cigar will be Lit, therefore a Liter. LOL
"Ask The Man Who Owns One."
Hi David, Thank you for sharing what you notice. Lou
Clipper was to Packard as La Salle was to Cadillac. The Clipper would be closer to an Olds 88, Desoto or mid-line Mercury, but at a Packard price. Of the latest true Packards, the 56's were the best. It's too bad that Studebaker ruined Packard.
