Hi TheGunfighter45acp, "you just can't have too much chrome!" NICE! "What a great looking wagon that any family would be proud to own." I agree. You're welcome, Lou
Some of the station wagons back then were beautiful, like this one. This one was a pillarless “hardtop” design (no B pillar), and the C pillar was thin and curved, just like a 2-door coupe.
Thankfully this car was designed and built before the phrase 'less is more' was even thought of. I picture Dad coming home from the Buick dealership and all the neighbors pouring out of their houses just to look. Oh the jealousy! 50's GM excess never fails to amaze and please. Outstanding video Lou!

The small city of Ionia (eye-own-ee-a) is located just 30 miles from my hometown. Fisher Body, Inc was the main industrial concern there in those days. Beautiful old Buick there! Hard to beat the cars of the 1950's for the solid build and high style they had!
Steve certainly has a beautiful car!! It reminds me of my dad's 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon, his first car with factory air conditioning. It had so much chrome on it that my dad called it the "chromemobile. "

Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy this "Very nice Buick" :-) "They sure went heavy on the chrome." yes, LOTS of CHROME on this car! My pleasure sharing this one with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi, Lou! With that hardtop styling and ALLLLLLL that chrome, you could make the argument that this was the ultimate station wagon. You can even hear the cardinals singing about it! LOL! Ironically, there were no portholes on these cars, as Buick had temporarily abandoned them. (They returned on the 1960 models.) Rambler had brought out the first hardtop station wagons in 1956, producing them through 1960 at just a handful per year. GM, through Oldsmobile and Buick, followed, but only offered them in 1957-58. Mercury made all its wagons in the hardtop style from 1957-1960, and Chrysler offered them from 1960-1964 at Dodge and the Chrysler brand. BTW, Caballero is Spanish for "horseman" or "gentleman". Many thanks to you and Steve for taking us along in this fine haulin' Chromemobile! Also a happy coincidence coming across that '57 Chevy. Such an awesome and unique example of a past era. When they were going through the brochure, it appeared there was one basic Buick for the year, and the trim level made it a Century or Roadmaster, etc
It’s so large there’s a rumor it’s being used to train cruise ship helmsmen. Seriously, I do miss the smooth, quiet and powerful cars of this era. They would just glide down the road. Thanks for the look back.

Hi Carroll, "Oh the heavenly chrome slathering. Love that Buick model year as it was so bulk and so laden with Chrome."...just the way we like it :-) Lou
This was my dream car when I was a teenager back in the early Sixties. Unfortunately I never owned one. I do have a taillight (apologizes to Johnny Cash) and for awhile I owned a Engine/transmission assembly from a wrecked one with only 18K on it. I'm in my Seventies now so I'll probably never get one, but the dusty old dream still remains. WHAT A CAR!!!
My 58 Super, the speedometer ribbon did not change colors. But when it was at its max speed the black 5 mph pegs disappeared and the ribbon was solid red.
Boy Lou, you sure can find them! I thought that I knew all the Buick models from back in the day because both my grandfather and father were Buick guys. Thanks for enlightening me.

Hi Jack, Happy to read you enjoy this "gorgeous car" :-) You don't see many station wagons so when I see a good one I like to share it. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Designed by Harley Earl and Ned Nickels. What a gorgeous, glorious machine! The 1958 Buick and Oldsmobile won the disputed title of "King of Chrome". What awesome excess in design! This one is the Century series Caballero wagon, a masterpiece of design and engineering. It worked out to about $1.00 per pound of car for your money at the Buick dealer in 1958, so for $4,000. you got 4,000 pounds of car. This was the last year of the original Buick product lines, in 1959 they would all have new names for a completely new low, long and sleek design. This car has a few styling cues taken directly from Harley Earl's amazing 1951 GM LeSabre concept car.
Great 58 Buick in the most popular color. Caddy and Pontiac used it too! I'll never forget a Buick show on LI, Ny in the 90s, a silver Limited convertible rode in with his wife sitting on the boot wearing a poodle skirt. The whole car shimmied in the sun. What an entrance!
"I'll never forget a Buick show on LI, Ny in the 90s, a silver Limited convertible rode in with his wife sitting on the boot wearing a poodle skirt. The whole car shimmied in the sun. What an entrance!" NICE memory!
In my 20's I had a '58 Buick Century 4-door hardtop. One of my all-time favorite cars. We put police interceptor radials on it. Since the car did not have power steering, that was a big mistake! I must have spent an hour just polishing all the little chrome squares that make up the grill.

I’m old school I loved the chrome and miss it in today’s cars, that’s I personally think the 1958 Impala is the most beautiful Chevrolet ever made, curves and chrome, that being said this is a beautiful classic that meant prestige if you were driving….

My father was a chemical engineer born and schooled around Detroit.. his degree led him to selling plating equipment and chemicals to the auto industry. Life was good when chrome was king! 🤩
Lou, another great very detailed video. The showroom brochure was really interesting, all those models, exterior colors and interior interior selections. The car is a time capsule of the wonderful exuberant postwar Eisenhower years. Today you can get any color car that you want as long as it's black, white or gray.
My Dad had a similar wagon he bought used to lug wood and tools. I bought a 57 Corvette to get away from so much chrome, but now I miss the chrome on cars.

Well yes, they were a little pricey but remember Buick’s were just a step step away from the Cadillac line; which did not manufacture station wagons. Also for those who purchased Buicks; this was their way of saying : “ Yes, I can well afford a Cadillac , but it comes “ with a lot of baggage ; meaning they were large , pretentious and ostentatious luxury cars, and these people didn’t want to be associated with two of the most dominant cliques in America which owned, drove, ( and I might add, even stole ..in many cases many of them ! ) Hence Buick’s became quite popular in the mid -late 50’s with a good share of the upper middle income and above families who deliberately avoided Caddies .🇺🇸

Hi Jerry, I'm not sure there are many of them like this to share. Good news! Happy to find this one to share with you today. You're welcome, Lou
Wow! Thank you so much Lou! I did some online investigation and found this Buick weighs 4500 lbs ; MSRP of $3431. My dad bought a new 1958 Buick Special 4Dr hardtop. It was trimmed with a white top and silver bottom and red interior. Thanks for the memories!
Hi Steven, You're welcome. Thank you for sharing your research. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I've always loved station wagons ever since my dad bought a '59 Chevy Brookwood when I was a kid. But this Buick is the totals! I'm very jealous.

Such an awesome and unique example of a past era. When they were going through the brochure, it appeared there was one basic Buick for the year, and the trim level made it a Century or Roadmaster, etc
Hi Jim K., Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
It’s so large there’s a rumor it’s being used to train cruise ship helmsmen.
Seriously, I do miss the smooth, quiet and powerful cars of this era. They would just glide down the road. Thanks for the look back.

@@loucostabile Thanks for the great video, always love seeing this interesting classics that are unique. I will keep an eye out for further videos.
Beautiful! The chrome against that color looks like jewelry.
That color for the 58 Buick was called Laurel Mist.
"Beautiful! The chrome against that color looks like jewelry." Well said.
Just fantastic!!!
:-)
Mr. B. Here ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍 Oh the GM models for 1958 were so out there so much that a have Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday Coupe . Many do not get the love like other models ! Still it’s my Super 88 I love it ! The wagons were very cool 5 door & 3 door ! 🍩☕️👀😎👍🇺🇸

That brochure is priceless! Incredible artwork.
Hi Sam H, I like when the CARetaker has the brochures. It's a nice addition to the video. Thanks for sharing you enjoy the brochures with this car, Lou
Oh the heavenly chrome slathering. Love that Buick model year as it was so bulk and so laden with Chrome. Its a shame so many were destroyed to be demolition derby cars.
Hi Carroll, "Oh the heavenly chrome slathering. Love that Buick model year as it was so bulk and so laden with Chrome."...just the way we like it :-) Lou
Your channel never ceases to amaze me, Lou, often featuring cars I didn't know existed. Thank you
NICE! First one I've seen, so glad to share this one with you. You're welcome danam0228
sounds amazing!! that metallic pastel pink (Laurel mist) is just GORGEOUS! Stunningly beautiful car.
Hi twas brillig, Happy to read you enjoy the sounds and color on this car :-) Lou
Hi Jewish Man, Happy to read this is your dream car :-) Hope you're behind the wheel of the right one for you soon, Lou
Lou, where do you find these gems?? Awesome!!!
Pete, This one...Canada :-)
@@loucostabile fantastic! Thanks for posting, Lou. 👍
My 58 Super, the speedometer ribbon did not change colors. But when it was at its max speed the black 5 mph pegs disappeared and the ribbon was solid red.
The steering column is just over the top!....Love it!
Happy to read what you enjoy :-)
The art of chrome. Some may call it gaudy, but it was so well executed. No complaints here!
I also love the Limited from that year.
Hi Jay, "The art of chrome" I like that :-) Lou
My dad had a 1957 Roadmaster a 57 Super and a 57 Caballero all at the same time.
Hi When Better Cars Are Built, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads cars :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Boy Lou, you sure can find them! I thought that I knew all the Buick models from back in the day because both my grandfather and father were Buick guys. Thanks for enlightening me.
Hi Peter, Happy to share this one with you. First time I've seen this one, and so glad to be able to share it on the Channel with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Lou, My parents had one of the baby blue Roadmasters. The one thing I remember about the car was that the seats were foam rubber and the most comfortable of any car I've been in. It had a very heavy, smooth ride.
Thank you. ❤🎉😊

I like the luggage rack. I think of it as a crown. This wagon is on par with the Chrysler barrel-back town and country
"I like the luggage rack. I think of it as a crown." NICE!

Hi Jack, Happy to read you enjoy this "gorgeous car" :-) You don't see many station wagons so when I see a good one I like to share it. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
That is a beautiful car. From the side it looks like it’s going fast. It’s the nicest station wagon ever made.
"It’s the nicest station wagon ever made." High praise.
Another impressive vehicle in Steve's collection. What a stunning Buick station wagon. Thank you gentlemen!
Happy to read you enjoy this "stunning Buick station wagon" :-) You're welcome John!
A work of art by Harley Earl. It’s stunning.
Happy to share this "work of art' with you :-)
What an amazing car!! A work of art
Hi Jensen Interceptor, High praise. Lou
Hi Donald, "What a gorgeous, glorious machine!" High praise. Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou

Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this Wagon :-) You're welcome CJ Design.
Maybe I am weird, but I LOVE the classic station wagons and this one is at the top of my list. As you said "WOW". Great review Lou.
Hi James, Happy to read "I LOVE the classic station wagons and this one is at the top of my list." :-) NICE! Lou
In my 20's I had a '58 Buick Century 4-door hardtop. One of my all-time favorite cars. We put police interceptor radials on it. Since the car did not have power steering, that was a big mistake! I must have spent an hour just polishing all the little chrome squares that make up the grill.

Хром, хром, хром... Фантастичний дизайн пʼятидесятих! Якась еклектика! Я в захваті! Дякую!
Hi Сергій, You're right, LOTS of Chrome. My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
I’m old school I loved the chrome and miss it in today’s cars, that’s I personally think the 1958 Impala is the most beautiful Chevrolet ever made, curves and chrome, that being said this is a beautiful classic that meant prestige if you were driving….
Hi Mo, Happy to share this car with LOTS of Chrome for you to enjoy. If you type into TH-cam search "My Car Story with Lou 1958 Impala" I think you'll see some you'll enjoy, Lou
Another diamond Lou.
Happy to share this "diamond" with you Michael :-)
My father was a chemical engineer born and schooled around Detroit.. his degree led him to selling plating equipment and chemicals to the auto industry. Life was good when chrome was king! 🤩
Lou, another great very detailed video. The showroom brochure was really interesting, all those models, exterior colors and interior interior selections. The car is a time capsule of the wonderful exuberant postwar Eisenhower years. Today you can get any color car that you want as long as it's black, white or gray.
Dan, Happy to read the details you enjoy with this video. Glad to share this "time capsule" with you, Lou
I never liked the 58 Buick or Olds. Until this one. I think the color makes it work for me. Makes the body blend in with the chrome. Just beautiful.
"Until this one" Nice :-)
A lot of the trim isn't chrome but stainless steel. A massive car!
"A lot of the trim isn't chrome but stainless steel. A massive car!" I agree.
My Dad had a similar wagon he bought used to lug wood and tools. I bought a 57 Corvette to get away from so much chrome, but now I miss the chrome on cars.

1958 was GM's massive chrome year. Our family had a pink '58 Olds 98 that vied with the Buicks for the amount of chrome title. 😁

Total W O W

At 78, I remember GM's 1958 models. I always liked the Buick Estate most of all - those side windows made it.

These were very expensive for the average family when they were new. It's why people bought Chevys and Pontiacs.
Thanks for viewing and sharing.
Well yes, they were a little pricey but remember Buick’s were just a step step away from the Cadillac line; which did not manufacture station wagons.
Also for those who purchased Buicks; this was their way of saying :
“ Yes, I can well afford a Cadillac , but it comes “ with a lot of baggage ; meaning they were large , pretentious and ostentatious luxury cars, and these people didn’t want to be associated with two of the most dominant cliques in America which owned, drove, ( and I might add, even stole ..in many cases many of them ! )
Hence Buick’s became quite popular in the mid -late 50’s with a good share of the upper middle income and above families who deliberately avoided Caddies .🇺🇸
A car sent from the assembly line in Flint, Michigan to Ionia (eye Oh nee uh), Michigan for the station wagon particulars.
A very nice ride!

My uncle bought a 1958 Buick Special. My aunt his wife , said to him .
….” Take it back to the dealer , it has too much chrome “ lol & he did , and bought a 1959 Pontiac instead. It is one of a kind !

I have never seen one of these wagons. I think that all that 1958 chrome looks a lot better in this wagon than on the Buick sedans.

So cool. Love that classic color. Classic colors can be difficult to do with modern paints as the cast of the color can change with panel shapes, sometimes it does not look right. This one works great.
Hi Bill, Happy to read "So cool" :-) My pleasure sharing this one with you, Lou
I would take this beautiful beautiful car over any new car no joke.
NICE!
Never remember seeing one on the road as a kid my Mom drove a 59 for about 10 years Dad had a 60
