    For the exhaust drone look into a Helmholtz resonator or a quarter wave resonator that tees into the exhaust. I’ve just fitted a Helmholtz resonator which has transformed the sound of my exhaust. Take a recording in the car of the drone and use a spectrum analyser on your PC to see which frequency is loudest. Then you can use an online calculator to work out the dimensions of a resonator to suppress that frequency.

    I've never understood putting rock hard suspension on a road car, my 1998 146 has teeth rattling suspension and I'd love just firm but with some give. Hope you get it sorted looks a great little car my mate has the 106 XSI as a road/track car.

    good evening jack, if you pay top notch prices, are you not supposed to get top notch cars?
    there hasn't been any love shown to this little car in a while... mates eh...
    the stiffer the suspension, the more shock loading put through that crisp-packet thin boot floor, softer suspension + rust repairs to the rear floor needs to go to the top of the list, i've recovered 2 of those little buggers [i am old] with the suspension pushed up through the floor, the second one pushed the girls pushchair/pram up through the back window, showering the kid [in his babyseat] in glass keep up the good work young man

    Try folding an old duvet up inside the boot covering the whole boot floor to get rid of the exhaust drone. Worked a treat in my rx8 with its thin boot floor.

    Enjoying this little car show. Only a handful of cars I was tempted buy new and this was one. If I could snap one up for a bargain I would, especially in this colour. Never had a Nova but this was the only Nova sport successor, (which was and always will be an icon). Very rare small engine super light rally car, cheap to buy, not to insure!

  • @tonycamplin8607
    @tonycamplin8607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Glad that nothing serious was wrong, it's a good buy. It looks like that under bonnet suspension brace has been removed, good. Also take off the one underneath, they're totally unnecessary on a road car. All they'll do is put your insurance premium up because you'll have to declare such an obvious modification if you don't and the car is involved in an accident the insurance would be invalid. An assessor would spot it straight away. Put the standard shockers back on and the original size and spec tyres, the car will be much better for it.

  • @ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣΔΡΑΚΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ-χ7σ

    very nice video my friend hope you enjoy this masterpiece of driving pleusure..i have a gti 2002 and is all factory without either exchaust..i have the kyb ultra sr for almost 5 years with factory dampers and they are work perfect..and is very informated in cornering with speed...they are no expensive so you can give it a chance...

  • @Grahame59
    @Grahame59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Bilstein B4s are an OE equivalent damper so I'd suggest you want something a bit better than those. B8s as you have now are competition and, as you have found, too firm for the road. You need a set of B6s. These are non-adjustable (and all the better for it) and are for fast road and work perfectly with std springs too. Better than OE by a country mile but give a great ride and handling. I must admit I don't have a Pug but have B6s on my Golf Mk2 GTI and am extremely pleased with them.

    • @xeboi11
      @xeboi11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The b6 will ride just the same as the b8 only difference is b8 is made to work with lowering springs
      Otherwise b6/b8 is identical

    • @Psyclone1979
      @Psyclone1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is only one difference between the B6 and the B8 and that is the length of the shock (damper). The B6s are the same length as the original dampers and are made to use in combination with orginal springs. The B8 are shorter than the original dampers and are made exclusively to use in combination with lowering springs. Therefore you have to change both the shocks and the springs to improve the comfort of the ride.

  • @xeboi11
    @xeboi11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I always found these older pugs just don't gel well with bilsteins, if you want to sort the ride out then standard springs with either some pug/kyb or Sachs shocks

    I’ve found the B8’s pretty stiff on other cars. A B4 damper seems to be softer and a better compromise for an out and out road car.

    • @kododerovic2
      @kododerovic2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion B6 is perfect for a sportier road use. B4 should be the same stiffness as OEM but B6 are 30% stiffer. I have B6 with eibach prokit springs on mine and its perfect for street use.

  • @lifewithsportscars2374

    Jack, Re the ride quality I’d definitely consider the tyres too, I have those Nankang’s on my Caterham and find them much stiffer than a regular road tyre, which is great for turn in etc but had a really noticeable effect on the ride quality. Grip is great (not done a winter yet though!) but there’s no way I’d put them on a daily because of how stiff they are ( trackday tyre after all). Having had a 106 Rallye (and later a gti6) back in the day, I remember how compliant these 90’s pugs were, and not sure a stiff tyre is the right answer. So might be worth trying to borrow a set of wheels and tyres before committing to new dampers. Mine was Blue too, very jealous! 🙂

    • @richardmclachlan7868
      @richardmclachlan7868 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree. Track tyres have a much stiffer sidewall - probably worth trying (borrowing maybe) some standard tyres before swapping the suspension.

    Jack, regarding your Ferrari. I saw a video of a car fouling plugs due to leaky spark plug tubes, it was a Nissan and they had to replace the valve covers due to no individual tube gaskets could be had. Just a thought that maybe oil could be coming from a bad seal around your spark plugs and the valve covers.

    Hi Jack, re other comments on here look at the tires, NS2Rs ride quite poorly and are quite loud, good for a cheap trackday tire, not on the road so much i found in an old 90s impreza sti. Enjoying your content, keep it up!

    IIRC back in the day these were droney anyway particularly around 60-75mph which is irritating in the UK. And the 1.6 8v is not a particularly characterful motor, the one I had was very "meh" and frankly a disappointment compared to the earlier 1.4 in the XSi. But just my opinion.

  • @rbeegood
    @rbeegood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the videos. I've recently bought a low mileage 1.1 after realising the prices of the sporty models has gone up so much. My plan is to upgrade the suspension to standard Rallye spec so it was interesting to hear your comments about the shock absorbers. The ride on mine over bumps is very good so I don't want to make it overly stiff. I was thinking of trying a bigger rear ARB and some standard spec Rallye shocks all round but not sure which ones to go for. I did wonder if you can still get them from Peugeot.

  • @thetruth7633
    @thetruth7633 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks pretty good for a UK car! A good tip : try and remove the spare tire by lowering it and GREASE the mechanism, these are very prone for seizing up. When you get a flat you will not be in for a surprise because the wheel does not want to come off. These are superb little cars, but you need to do a lot of preventive maintenance and keep a head gasket on stock at home 🤪

    French cars are renown for leaning over on their suspension somewhat more than most. It's a typical French custom to run a soft setting for a street car and rely on its chassis design a little more than most to corner well. Grab some B6's and let the chassis and steering geometry do its work and embrace the better ride quality.
    You aren't a track day guy, Jack. As mentioned below some sound deadening sheets may do wonders for your "boominess" without the expense and slight performance loss of removing the Skorpion full system.

    It might save friendships to have a rust check before buying a car from a friend, rather than after. The psychology of negotiations somehow becomes different.
    Adding weight or changing the position of the hangers on the exhaust might shift the frequency to something less annoying.

  • @arthurdardalis

    I have also found 90s peugeot works best with softer suspension, my 405 Mi16 has B4 and standard springs all around, just slightly firmer than the 50k miles OE one, soaked up all the bumps nicely.
    These era of Peugeot does not have very stiff floor board, stiffer suspension only makes the body flexing more preventing the suspension keeping it's geometric.
    Lastly tire stiffness and weight also plays a role here, these cars have small tires, there is not much weight on each wheel. Any small changes in sidewall stiffness and wheel weight can have dramatic impact on ride quality.

  • @576103
    @576103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Jack-If the rest of the exhaust system is solid, and the only thing that bothers you is the teenage racer noise it makes, why not just fit a different, grown-up muffler, rather than going through the expense of changing the whole system?

  • @T16MGJ
    @T16MGJ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Modern car tyres come in XL spec. XL = Extra Load which means stiffer sidewalls and poorer ride quality even on OE standard suspension. Thus much stiffer less give in the sidewalls.
    Some years ago, when UNIROYAL introduced their latest Rainsports, RS5s I fitted four new ones to my ZT-T 1.8T all round. The ride quality was poor even allowing for the MG ZTs more stiffer suspension to allow for sharper handling. I usually run my tyres 3 or 4 psi over recommended. Dropping that down to 30psi front and 29 psi rear transformed the ride and handling of my car with those XL spec tyres.
    My most recent purchase, a V8 ZT260, had even worse ride quality. Now the recommended is around 35 psi front and rear and when I got the chance, I checked the tyre pressures. 40psi all round. Dropped that down to around the manufacturer recommended and ride quality immediately improved. Could be better though. Still getting to know the car.
    I shall avoid XL spec tyres next time I buy new. Previously, I had RS2s and RS3s on the family's cars and they were just fine. No sign of XL letters on the sidewalls.
    It's simple little things like that which can make a BIG difference.

    Maybe it's obvious but larger caster angle makes it more relaxed, less nervous but it's harder to turn the wheels. It's like with a bicycle, the road bikes have high frame head angle, and DH bikes or cruisers have very low frame head angle.

    The more positive caster the more the car wants to go straight, it doesn't follow divots and undulations in the road and is more stable at speed, my ford GT with a much worked Rover V8 was 3 dgrees of positive caster and about 1-1.5 degrees camber, it was very stable at 160kph and handled like it was on rails with all the other changes but and absolute bitch to parallel park, you would walk and extra mile just so you could use an angle car park

    Keep the exhaust, get a helmholtz resonator fitted. You'll need a spectrum analyser app on your phone to find the drone frequency and then a little math to calculate the chamber and neck size. Just had a system made for my Audi S4 (V8). Sounded brilliant but droned. Helmholtz resonators killed the drone but did not change the character of the exhaust. Should make for some great content!

I'm pretty sure you'd not like the full poly engine and suspension setup but the buzzing dashboard doesn't really bother me. The excellent handling and improved gearchanging more than makes up for it. I'm wondering, if your engine lets go, would you replace it with the 16 valver from the GTi ?
