I’m 43, and the worst mistake I ever made was when I decided in my 20’s that I would hide my stutter. It’s a hard road to come back from. I need so much more than just speech therapy. Years of putting up walls and isolating myself and avoiding certain speaking situations and trying my best to substitute words in my head before I speak has done a number on my mind.

If you hide your stutter you end up hiding yourself. I work in economics/public policy and I stutter, sometimes badly-and no one dares bring it up to my face. Let them judge me, let them make fun of me, but stutterers & dyslexics have IQs 15 points higher than the general population due to our brains working harder to identify/anticipate sequences of words to avoid/substitute. I know my stuff better than them, especially quantitative concepts, so all that matters is the job gets done. Cheer up, everyone has something wrong with them, we’re no different.

@@billw4805 To get good at anything you have to put in the work. Speech therapists can only show you the way, they can’t get in your brain (yet, lol). My lightbulb moment was two college part time jobs doing cold calling for a stock broker and Black Friday retail electronic sales that forced me to talk to hundreds of customers a day. Any “menial” customer facing job is a great consequence-free environment to practice talking to people you will never see again in your life. Win/win! Regardless of your current profession, you could try moonlighting a few hours a week at a store you don’t care about; not for the money, but for the practice. Cold calling is great, lol, stuttering telemarketers get their own special kind of insults before the prospect hangs up; so that also helps thicken the skin.

Just reading these comments and realizing I’m not alone has made me feel much better. Telework has stop for my employer and I’m gonna be on the phone surrounded by fellow employees and that terrifies me. I’m already practicing these simples exercises. Thank you for the great tips.

God bless you. This video made me feel so much better about myself. Yes I need to let others know I have stutter and language problem. Human Resource and my supervisor knows that I stutter. They’re okay with it. A few others as well. They don’t make fun of me.. This is a different subject but I mostly pick up women in the internet because I can’t do it in person. I feel more comfortable speaking to them online before we meet up. Of course we exchange numbers but when I’m ready to talk, I’ll call. If they push me away after, whatever. I do gain confidence when that person that I’m talking to excepts my speech even if they push me away after our meet ups or if things don’t work out. My speech isn’t that bad but when it comes to speaking to someone I don’t know, I freeze and hide. Anyways what I’m trying to say, is for the one’s who stutters like myself, I had a counselor that I used to go to who help me a lot and I want to help you guys even if I stutter. Remember these three powerful quotes…
    1. Medication.. If you need it!! “Just saying”
    2. Change your thinking
    3. Change your behavior
Don’t let no one put you down not even females or males. F what they think. Try to meet people online and get a feel of them before you guys meet up and see if the stick around. I’m not saying to depend on the Internet because you need to go out for a least for a walk and practice greeting people for example, “hello, good morning, good evening, good night. Easy.. That’s for starters.. Works for me but every stutters is different from mine. I hope my advice helps you guys out. President Joe Biden from the United States of America also stutters and I look up to him and you should too. Here’s more help that I recommend you guys to do. Talk yourself alone in front of a mirror in your bathroom 15 minutes when you’re home alone. You can talk about anything. Positivity really helps keep that in mind. I feel so much better without texting this out. Don’t let no one put you down, you guys. Stick to text messaging until you’re ready to speak up. You’ll feel comfortable after. Do the breathing exercises. Works for me. If you’re not ready to speak after a breather, relax and breathe again. If you’re still not ready, take another breather.

@@mattg9171 have you ever tried to sing I believe that singing helps it's like when you stutter you need to have a rhythm going that's where the singing help because you can get a rhythm going like music and then when you talk you've got a rhythm going and that should assist and be relaxed a bit more that's in my opinion through all of my observations of people that stutter no promises just another food for thought I find it interesting that the Asian culture Chinese people speaking Mandarin actually use their throat muscles and sort of have to sing the words I had to learn Mandarin for awhile to give a lecture in it
It's really hard using your throat muscles I'm AN English speaking person so all my sounds are made from my mouth and tongue muscles may be looking at it from that angle might help but I do know that singing helps with stuttering

Hello Patricia. There are many types of psychological therapies for stuttering, I'm assuming; such as cognitive behavioral and emotionally focused. What type of therapy would you recommend? Love your videos and thank you.

Hi Patricia. I watched your TH-cam video and liked it. I am a stutter and have a speech impediment. Stuttering is not my biggest concern of talking. My biggest verbal problem is that my voice is not crisp, clear and sigle tone. Other people even who stutter have a normal sounding voice. How do I make my voice sound good, crisp amd clear. I don't want people to make faces that they are having difficulty understanding what I am saying when I am not stuttering.

The best thing we can do is to remove attachment from prestige, people's outlook for us...live bravely, don't worry about people's reactions after we speak...it's our life we should live peacefully.

Go back to the creator and to someone who truly understands faith in Jesus christ name
They are able to help you through faith right there and then! Have faith in Jesus and act on it. Do not let anyone convince you not to try!
