    Sick! My fiance and I built out a 35 foot bus a year ago and have been traveling full-time ever since! Currently commenting from 8,000' up a mountain in the Toiyabe National Forest ✌

      Awesome! I love roaming around and seeing the sights on this continent... glad you're taking full advantage. We've upgraded to a 4x4 sprinter based motorhome now... the jeep was missing a bathroom.... so the big step up had to happen

    Damn! I’m about 7 months out from purchasing an off-road vehicle. I’ve always owned cars but I caught the outdoor bug when I visited Colorado. In the last 3 months of searching, I’ve been “dead set” on vehicles several times. First the Taco, then the 4Runner, then the Tundra. Now I’m considering the JK or JL. Who knows what vehicle I’ll be eyeing in 3 months. Anyways, awesome rig! Stay safe out there! 🤙🏼✌🏼

      +Simon Pilkington honestly it was between a Syncro Westfalia Vanagon or this... My friend puts subie engines in them... Love them... But they are 30+ yr old vehicles and would need so many bits and pieces upgraded to handle long forest roads.
      What year you in? Think you are air-cooled, right? You will see pics of a pop top party in a couple months when we get together with those guys in New Mexico!!!

    • @bigkennyg.621
      @bigkennyg.621 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that I would add is solar panels on the top to keep the batteries fully charged throughout the day also I live in a mobile home park so having something that looks like a normal Street vehicle would be perfect I've been checking on vans but I really don't want to do the van thing. Even a four-wheel-drive van although it would be cool it can't go where a jeep can go unless you have a lot of work done to it Plus I've always really wanted a jeep and this is the first time I've seen that tent that you have on top of it

    That's a solid idea, having the rooftop tent as part of the roof. I personally hate the look of the ones you have to stick on a roof rack.

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And being able to crawl up there from the inside is fantastic... Not that the Jeep is aerodynamic at all... lol. but it didn't really cut down my gas mileage which surprised me and I think that is because it is more integrated to the stock lines.

      @@MilesB Hailey ID. My wife and I were out there visiting family for Thanksgiving and ran across it on Facebook Marketplace. We half expected it to be in rough shape and were surprised with how well cared for it is and we just had to take it home. Now she's tucked in the garage among the other toys and will continue to be well cared for and showered with upgrades to take us where we want to go! We've already replaced the missing radio knob and a few broken fender clips, detailed every inch, and solved a door switch issue that caused the alarm to go off occasionally. Speaking of - do you know what the wire is for tapped into the violet wire on the driver door harness under the left side of the dash? Maybe we'll post here on TH-cam again with some of our adventures - it's been a few years as life has taken some crazy turns and taught us some crazy lessons, but stuff is leveling out quite nicely now. :)

      the top is still removable, but it's heavier and a little more awkward on where the weight is. Considering they have a consistent 8 week or more lead time, ours took 10 weeks, they are priced right... But they aren't for everyone.

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on! :D I think they are great niches... Backpacking is lest 'brand' oriented. For example, 'Toyota guys' and 'Jeep guys' have different needs/wants.
      Backpackers all need lightweight compact gear. Plus Avantlink has a TON of great affiliate programs for those items. Lots of room for gear reviews, trail reviews, etc!

    @scottstevenson4177 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey, Miles! Are you working much on your overlanding trips? I assume you are using hotspot when there is signal? Are there any options for when you don't have signal? I work online as well and would love to take an extended trip (multiple days) but at this point, I am unable to step away from the internet for that long.

    • @MilesB
      @MilesB  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were... You can see several videos where I'm literally out in the woods on solar... like this: th-cam.com/video/hhsjV0zdDw4/w-d-xo.html With dual batteries, the panel would keep our fridge, laptops and phones topped up if I kept it in the sun all day. So power was pretty easy to sort out.
      Verizon data coverage is pretty amazing... And they offer an unlimited service plan. That supported us with simple tethering, but their jetpack device (cell to wifi) is even better. Some spots we were out on forest roads, miles from the nearest town (a town being a liquor store and gas station, no stop lights) surrounded by peaks and still had like 2 bars of 4g or 4 bars of 3g. Amazing!
      We would cross-reference the data maps at Sensorly (website) with the camping sites we found on the allstays app (some free/boondocking, some state/ntnl forest, etc) to find the areas/campgrounds that had a high likelihood of having signal...
      Now we do media heavy work so patience was key in these situations, like uploading that video, but at many campgrounds like Priest Lake in N. Idaho we had amazing coverage. Also ran big media files through handbrake app to compress them first. We are definitely 'those campers' wifey looking at her phone while driving through the campground looking for that 4 bars instead of 2 bars of service, lol.
      Batching online and offline work is key, we leveraged coffee shops for big video uploads sometimes... Did a lot of our writing offline and then just went online to publish.
      Going back out this summer, we didn't get up into Canada due to the fires last year, so giving it another shot this year and will approach it pretty much the same way!
      It has challenges and a couple times we had to up and move because a video or audio had to get uploaded, but whatever, we rolled with the puch and went on to the next spot...
      Not for everyone but we absolutely love it and there is so much amazing land to see across the western US it is just magical.

    • @scottstevenson4177
      @scottstevenson4177 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really appreciate the time that you took to make this comment! You're the man!
      That is some really good advice! I have Verizon also and noticed the same even when we took a 10-day hiking trip to do part of the Appalachian Trail. I was not working on the trail, but I could have used a hotspot in some areas if I wanted. Instead, we used the mornings to hike and the afternoons to catch up on work and utilized coffee shops as well... I have just always been pretty nervous to go out on the road but I think your advice on Sensorly would ease that a bit!
      Batching online vs offline is a great strategy too!
      Haha, hey! There is nothing wrong with being "those campers." You have been able to create a lifestyle full of freedom and it is just one of the trade-offs. I would rather be the one searching for a signal at a campsite doing work in a beautiful location than being cooped up in a cubicle in some office setting!
      I hope that all of your future trips go well! There is definitely a lot to see!
      We should be coming out west here for a few months at the beginning of the year. I am looking forward to it!
      Thank you again for your time!
