she found herself out of radio contact with the ground....and realized the plane wouild crash into the mountain....she correctly reasoned that if the plane climbed by her pulling back on the yoke, the airspeed would go down. Fortunately for her, the Captain was still conscious enough to tell her to push the throttles forward.....she overcame what must have been enormous fear and pulled off a near impossible feat by climbing the 747 over the mountains, and giving the rescuers time to get a pilot on board...this to me was the most nail-bitinmg, edge-of seat scene...everything after that was downhill, except for the part of course when Maj Alexander plummetted to his death.....if this had happened in real life it would have been a bigger news story that the Miracle on the Hudson.
Only 180 knots IAS when she goes for "Climb Power?" Shocking! Of course she appears to be at a full flaps setting on the exterior shots but in the cockpit the flap handle is in the retracted Zero Degrees position.
He should have just said, "Turn, baby, turn." I always thought it was funny how they'd barely miss a mountain peak when all they had to do was just turn 10 degrees.
Charlton Heston was THE MAN!!! And this film "Airport 1975"(1974) is sooooooo iconic! For me, even more epic than "Ben Hur"(1959) was. Especially great is that landing scene, the moment when the wheels touch the concrete!

Climb baby Climb, rest in peace Karen Black and Charleston Heston.
I remember this scene a little differently when I saw it in the theatre when it premiered. They actually showed the plane clearing the mountain top - it looked like it was less than a foot, at least close enough to kick up some snow dust. It's been cut because it likely didn't look good on 4:3 TVs with pan-and-scan or letterbox format back then, but it should look decent on TVs today. I wonder if they lost that footage?
There is too much CGI in movies now but I am wondering if it would be a neat idea to take the movie back to the lab and CGI the hole in the plane for some of those long shots. Think about it.
Why? Its a real 747 in a real sky. Why CGI it? The only thing i could see redone in CGI is the mid air collision and the first officer going out the side. It always looked awkward and clunky. The small plane never actually advances and just "Hangs" in front of the window.
@@gargantuaism Not true. They put a decal "Plug" over the window when the air force jet was checking it out. Granted it wasn't a "Hole" but it was a black cut out stuck to the fuselage which appeared like a hole for a few seconds. Kind of the Wile Coyote rubber hole equivalent. The rest of the time they're shooting the jet from the other side.
@@gargantuaism They should re do the mid air collision with CGI. It looks weird the way it is. The small plane doesn't even move in the window. It would have been cool to see it all in one shot. Wham!! it hits the side window and the pilot gets sucked out.
Reality? The plane would be ripped to pieces on impact. The wing hitting the oil rig would be sheered off , the plane would not lurch sideways. The engine scraping the water surface would be ripped from the wing instantly. All you have to do is watch the Egypt air hijacking that ran out of fuel and ditched. It stayed intact for 200 feet and then just came apart.

The flaps were set to 10 degrees, not full.
This was a real great
You could never be sure if Karen was looking at you or watching out for the bus coming.
Look at that hell of a Jumbo Jet!
I use to refuel them at Anchorage International in the 80’s. Those 747’s and DC-10’s KLM, Sabena, JAL, KAL.

2:13 This is a typical thing The Simpsons would make fun of. She's being dramatic all while behind her is obviously a projected image.

It could easily be done.

Because you don't see the hole in the plane while it's flying in those long shots.

The movie is a little campy but Karen Black acting carries it.
