  • In this quite ramble-laden first video where I try to brain dump some of my strategies, I talk about the more unique aspects of the setup and running of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition adventure "Out of the Abyss". I talk through some of the preparation, Session 0 handling, and house rules used to make Out of the Abyss more engaging for players and easier for DMs. These strategies could also be adapted to other games around your table. We are hoping this is a jumping off point for more videos based on the topics about which you'd like to learn more. So leave a content and tell us what you want to hear about!

This was very informative for me as a relatively new DM, and someone who’s still new to rpgs as a whole. I started running a home brew campaign last year with my family that plays about once a month, but recently I started running Lost Mine of Phandelver on roll20 with my younger brother and one of his friends. We play about once every 1-2 weeks, and I think we’re probably 5-6 sessions from finishing the module. They expressed interest in Out of the Abyss so that’s what I’m looking at running for them next. I love how thorough you seem to be as a DM and I hope that I’m able to use some of these techniques you described to make the game more engaging for my players in the future. I’m looking forward to exploring more of your channel soon!

Obviously super late to the party on this, but I really like the preroll thing. I'm certainly going to try something similar for my next game. Thanks

Everytime a DM like you sits behind the screen, Gary Gygax rolls a nat 20 in Heaven.

This is great information but I was specifically looking for how to run out of the abyss not just a game in general. I'm seriously having difficulty trying to figure out what to do with some of this stuff when there are no character stats for any of the special characters. The book seems to be more of an idea source than any kind of module or campaign guide.

So, I'm finally sitting down to run OotA and firs thing I'm doing is that worksheet for random encounters. With so much time travelling in this adventure I have to do this... Thank you for these excellent tips.

Do you use tokens on the maps that are "constructed" on fly? How small are they? Or the maps are not used on battle, is it just for reference?

I’m 15 minutes in, this video is not titled properly, it’s cute dm props and little tricks like that. But it has almost not information pertaining to running Out of the Abyss
