I can't really compare since Tierkreis was the first (and currently only) Suikoden game I've played. All I can say is that I love it, even despite the quality of the dub... at least Elias Toufexis and Bruce Dinsmore were great in their roles (Asad and Conon are still my favorite characters in the game).
Dirk's VA might not have been great, but there was one moment where he outshone the original Japanese version (that insane laugh when he jumps out the window, lol).

I actually have very fun memories playing this on my Nintendo DS late into the night in bed before going to sleep. The story was very comfy and the characters still had that classic Suikoden charm to them

I guess I was lucky with having played this game without knowing what Suikoden was really about prior. I was pretty pleased with what I played as a jrpg, and found it to be one of the better RPGs on the DS still. The music alone does elevate the game too I agree.
I went into this game with expectations that it was on a limited portable hard ware and just like the psp one they were both great in that sense . The music ost is one of the best in the series and the story and visuals were simple enough to charm some of its fans. I enjoyed this entry

I didn't owned Playstation, but I did owned a DS as a kid. So this was actually my introduction to Suikoden game. And it's not like I played it cause of the series either, I never heard heard of Suikoden games when I first tried this game, it looked cool and that was enough for me to play it.
And ya know what? This ended up being my literal favorite game on a DS, and I played ALOT of DS games. Loved the anime, cutscenes, army, character development, appearance changes for both Kingdom and characters as you progress through the game, character design 108 playable characters, and so on. So after I became a grownup, 1 and 2 was the first game I decided to play when I got myself a Emulator on PC. I can see why people like others more, and maybe it did felt vastly different from the normal Suikoden games, but DS version was still amazing. Lol XD

This one is actually has a great story. I remember having a discussion to get characters with people all over the internet lol in some forum. LordYuanShu or something? I forgot. Well, not the best like 2 and 5 but certainly better than 4 and have some great moments. The only problem is the lore didn't actually connect to the 5 main titles and there is no war minigames.
this was my first suikoden, i later played 3,4,5 on the ps2.
been in love ever since. eiyuden chronicle : hundred heroes is like a blast from the past.
Passed up getting a copy when it was very affordable and now I’m regretting it. Would have been a neat lesser known JRPG to own and eventually play - doubt this one will ever receive a remaster or port to modern systems.

Probably true. If the series is revisited after the I and II remasters it will probably be a new entry.
The story definitely carried this one. The gameplay gets pretty flat after a while, and it doesn't share a lot with the series aside from the 108 stars of destiny, but the interesting premise made up for it. The character designs and art style absolutely go hard, really memorable and cozy.
The English dub had to make a lot of compromises to save space, which is why Sieg had to run his mouth at a rapid pace, but don't sleep on the Japanese original. Play an Undub if you wanna experience this, it actually has twice as much voice acting, like victory lines and such.
This is actually my first and only suikoden and I love it a lot. I never knoew about suikoden before and I also Recruit all characters too because of my ocd lol. Cant wait for the original remaster that will be my 2nd suikoden
2 things missing for me, that would have made me ignore the other drawbacks. Connection to the series and interesting gameplay.

I loved this game so much. Yes, it’s very different for a Suikoden game but I highly enjoyed the story, music, corny voice acting and battle system. I had so much fun playing this on those road trips cross country while on tour.

I've only played 1&2 though so I'm probably not as put off by things not being exactly the same as the others in some ways.
I'd have been more annoyed if a hypothetical Suikoden 6 had made all these changes, but that's side games for you, they get to be a little different.

Yeah, if you like RPGs, it's probably among the top DS RPGs.
The terrible quality of the speech sampling was really the most frustrating thing, I mean I was already very bored, but this fact convinced me to put the game aside to pick it up again when I felt like it... Which unfortunately never happened.

I really loved this game, 1st suikoden game i've played, after this, i tried other suikoden but didn't satisfy my gaming experience unlike this one.

Knew this came out but never played it. And slowly recollecting the suicodin games that I had gotten rid of when I was a stupid young child lol.
So many people judge the Voice Over so bad, but it's actually not, it's rather great than your regular voice over in anime, in fact if you compare it to japanese voice over the energy is actually spot on.
It's simple game, great story, so easy to master mechanics, and it's engaging to play, not to forget the combo system. it's so good.
If you think this game is forgetable, well... try playing Heracles.
I really love the graphics outside of battle (I'm a big pre-rendered backgrounds fan - that's often a selling point for me), but the graphics during battles doesn't appeal to me (I also think it's too bland and cartoonish), I think it would have been better if they went with another artstyle in battles, I also dislike the font of the damage numbers.

I remember the story not being that bad but nothing great either, but the music being amazing. Some characters were cool too, but I totally agree, the main character's voice was VERY annoying.
But the the gameplay was a drawback for me, especially not using runes, limited a party to 4 (same problem than with Suikoden 4), and most of all, all the backtracking the game forces on you was enough for me to play the game once and forget about it.
Tierkreis means Animal Circle in German. 😅

This is my first Suikoden… still one of my favs but the game was too easy & no strategic battles, also lots of random encounters
i enjoyed playing this one, can't say much about the dub tho, they freaking speak so fast I had a headache.

This one was ok. I did finish it and get all the characters back when it came out. However, this entry, along with Suikoden 4 were weaker entries for me. I finished the first two along time ago and they are both fantastic games. I tried 5 but couldn’t get into it and gave up around 6-8 hour mark. Twice!
Overlooked cause of limited console access i guess, im pretty sure suikoden fans would get and play all it if its more accesible on pc.
I thought it was incredible that a handheld game got voiceovers. Sure, the main character is rushed, but this is a level of quality you simply don’t find in other DS RPGs.

Simply put, its simply not a Suikoden game. It'd be better w/o that name attached as it doesn't live up to the rest of the series.

The story... Honestly the story was a let down, for a DS game however it was a great RPG, great soundtrack and haha, I did find the voice acting "unique"
Would I recommend it? No. It's far too long, there are better games to spend your precious time on trust me.
It was interesting but I never beat it. Shoulda just called it tierkreis instead of suikoden, expectations dropped people woulda adopted it more.
Loved the worlds merging thing, wouldn't it be crazy to wake up one day and have the street you've gone down your whole life look completely different? This path now has boardwalk over a lake with a waterfall and trying to tell your friends "nah this hasn't always been here!!" Would be nuts. Like suddenly there's a giant statue clearly from another era.... like what??
People ragged on this game for having an unlikable protagonist but honestly by mid game he mellows out quite a lot. The entire story for this game was such a heavy mindf*** that it stayed with me a long time after finishing. I love games like that and also the soundtrack is amazing! SALLY BEACON lets goooooo. My one critique is that is is a little too easy and the multiple party system for event battles (its been a long time since i played i dunno how to describe this) was a little non sequential. That aspect could have been developed more. Overall Top 10 games on the DS for me.

The One King is an absolutely amazing villain. The fact that he straight up destroys worlds in merging them into one is nutty. Like that one character (I forget the race but it was animalistic) that joins the party and you help him return to his world, only to find out later that the One King completely erased the world he went to and rubbed him out of existence.
that bad ending got me rolling, i mean who knew that he would be the one king.

Although the scale of Tierkreis cannot be compared to main line Suikoden tittles, but it's still a very decent JRPG game which bring a lot of pleasant times for me.
It's funny because Suikoden Tierkreis is my favorite game on DS.
Once, I convinced a friend to play it and, even if we had a lot of fun together, when he actually finished the main story, he said the game was okay, but not more.
It make me think a lot, because of several factors:
-I can't replay a game for his story alone, even when I loved it, like I can't read a book again. But in the case of suikoden Tierkreis, it's not the same. So, nostalgia? I'm not sure.
-I discover the game at a very young age, and the fact that you can play 108 characters and the beauty of the chara-design, made a huge impact on the young me.
-The universe, even if it's really not exploited, is a beautiful background for the story. I love the differents races, the lore, and the mechanics of the worlds.
-The last and main fact: I did'nt play the main games.
So, despite all that, I know it's not an incredible game, but I still like it very much, and I'm glad there are some people who think the same, even a little.

I was looking to what the rest of the genre plays like because I was nostalgic for this game. It was a very good RPG imo. Far from perfect but had an odd charm about it. Then I saw what the main series looked like, I would rather have cartoons that odd trying to be real without trying to actually be real. I don't know. Off putting and not for me I guess.
This is my one and only Suikoden I’ve played. I really enjoy and have fond memory of it.
This was my first suikoden game and I will always have a nostalgia for it. I hate that these lesser known rpg’s have no shot at a remaster. Also I would say Suikoden 4 is the weakest story in the series, not this one IMO.

My first entry to the Suikoden Series. I just loved it from the first few hours. The story is doped, and the ennemy has some "illuminati vibe" that I loved to hate (Macoute).
Sure it has some lacks, specially after playing suiko I and II, but it still was a great game and one of the best JRPG on NDS.

Suikoden Tierkreis, Solatorobo and FFantasy Tactics were the holy RPG trinity of my Nintendo DS.
Honestly when I saw the party wasn't only 5 I never even tried it. Will be interesting to give it a revisit
It was a decent game that scratches the Suikoden itch. Had a bit of a crazy difficulty spike at the end but I did finish it. Even got all the characters but it wasn't clear if the ending changed because of it. The music was quite good iirc, the voice acting was... as good as could be expected from the DS.
In my opinion if they removed the suikoden name from the title it wouldn't change much.
It is alright game just not true game of suikoden.

This was the first suikoden game I played, I enjoyed the story a lot. Yes the dub was bad, but I didn’t hate it so bad to keep from playing. For a Ds game, it was an excellent rpg. One of the better rpgs on the system

I haven't played any games in the Suikoden series yet but I can tell from a distance why this game doesn't quite match up to the numbered titles. Still it looks like a good time so I'll probably just get a Japanese copy for collections sake.

can't say it's a bad game but compared to other suikoden games it does lack some features

The only big letdown is of course the fact that there is no connection with the main serie. Otherwise, it’s a pretty solid game with an incredible soundtrack and a good story.
It’s still a better game than Suikoden IV anyway.

As far as JRPG games go, Tierkreis is a really solid one.
It is one of my favourite jrpgs for the ds.
I think for this, you kinda have to treat this game as a non Suikoden game to appreciate it, like I had to mentally divorce Chrono Cross from Chrono Trigger to figure out that Cross is a great game in its own right, instead of a disappointing continuation of the story of CT.
What you miss is that this game was suppose to be a kind of reboot of the Suikoden Series to see if they could retain certain pillars of Suikoden (108 stars, the castle, etc) but ditch the Lore and the original world after Murayama left. I think Konomi just decided that they didnt want to deal with the complex world, or maybe didnt think they could do it in a way that pleased fans after 4 was such a failure (critically and fiscally) and 5 received tepid sales. Knowing that it was both kind of a reboot and a it was a DS game, I was probably more forgiving of its faults when I played it. I enjoyed it a lot more than 4, but would prefer all the other mainline games.
The major reason that this game got a bad rap at the time was the main character's voice. I know a ton of people were turned off by it and avoided the title because its legendary in how bad it is. Everyone else's voice is fine. For those people who havent played the game, its clear that they sped up the voice actors lines (probably so it would fit within the memory of the cartridge). Increasing a characters voice by 10 or 20% was frequently used in cartoons so that they could get the lines in in order to meet the hard time limits of TV cartoons. This though sounded like they sped it up by 20% for the entire first half of the game (if I recall its a little better toward the end, where he speaks a bit slower, but super fast at the very beginning). Im betting that Konami didnt want to pay for larger cart sizes for the English version. Id be interested in how the MC sounds like in other languages.
Companies being cheap or willing the bite the bullet can mean a lot to games. Radiant Historia had a killer sound track that they were going to pair down because Yoko Shimamura had written so many really really good tracks for but it pushed what they planned for the DS cart they were aiming for, but management at Atlus actually listened to her work and was like "no this is too good to cut! We will buy bigger carts to put it on!". Radiant Historia is the 2nd best soundtrack on the DS after TWETY and im sure they sold more than a few extra carts on the strength of the sound tracks.

If we ignore the fact that it is a suikoden game, it is actually quite decent. Ironically, the weakest aspect of this game in my opinion is the story. The story involves war with some factions, but considering that our faction only consists of some dozens people against a whole nation is a bit weird, even though the character introduces as people with really strong power, it is still a bit disturbing for me. But overall, it is still good. I have replayed it several times in fact, trying out every character as possible, and it is still enjoyable.
I had fun with this one, one of the few RPGs I can actually finish. It's definitely not the suikoden experience you expect from the main titles though.
