It's really funny, my friend introduced me to DD like 3 years ago and was saying how hard it was to use Jester. When I went into The Farmstead for the first time I was like "whats so hard about Jester? I just sit there and play music."
True. Crusader can be used in any position and doesn’t rely on position. But Crusader doesn’t excel at anything but doesn’t suck at anything other than out speeding anything.

On my TTRPG party we call obliterating everything in sight as "preventive healing". "Leper & Jester are a bad combination." Never have I ever read a more blatantly wrong and downright STUPID thing in my life. Leper & Jester is probably the second most iconic duo after Dismas & Reynauld.
Eh if u go with jester with the movement shifting and stuff, its not exactly idea for leper when he relies being in the front, especially if u want to use the dmg debuff ability. Unless ur using jester for the battle ballad to speed up leper then thats fine. Abomination and jester is probably more iconic duo tbh
@@art-cs6us it's not like the jester has to set the leper out of position, he can just go from the 3rd to 2nd rank with his stab ability and use finale to one shot the enemy that leper missed 3 times in a row
My first (and still my only) kill on Heart was accomplished mostly by Leper and Jester. Rest of team was dead but this two chads destroyed that fucker. But urfortunately The Crimson Court came and consumed them
I'm by no means good at this game, but a Jester and Leper (with the assistance of a Shield breaker and a Vestal) got me to 60 kills in the Endless Harvest which was pretty amazing to me tbh. Other comps featuring Jester and Leper, even not together, are fucking astounding. Jester absolutely carries in Crimson Court with his high bleeds. Leper is a goddamn unmovable force. They'll die someday but I'll know em as my MVPs forever
His argument about crusader reminds me of having to kill swine prince with plague/jester/crusader/leper since my vestal was gambling, but the swine prince would give sacred scroll Crusader had to be the main healer and I managed to not only kill the prince, but also clear the dungeon Then vestal chose to keep gambling an extra week then gambled the scroll away
Honeslty, I was neglecting Highwayman for a long time but after using him at high level dungeons for a while... He just does so much damage and does it consistently, he has nigh ambush protection, his trinkets are good, the amount of damage he gets from riposting is absurd, he can delete enemies without prot with point blank shot AND he's not very fragile. Solid C tier for me.
I love how half of the criticisms of all these heroes is 'if you don't plan your team properly this guy will be shit'. Yup. That is basically how the game works.
This site is hilarious if you look at some of their Fire Emblem: Three Houses content, where for their tier list of weapons, they...literally put an un-obtainable weapon in the number one spot, because they didn't even check if it was usable. They just looked at the weapon stats on the wiki without looking to see if the player actually has access to it, lol.
Good ol' Viskam otherwise know as "Ha this thing isn't doing anything, i'll just ignore it. Wait, that damaged student hasn't leveled Res at all! Divine pulse time."

I mean Crus isn't that good to be honest: he is a jack of all trades outdone by basically everyone. There is only one type of comp where he can outperform other classes, while most specialists can be really good in different ones. Damage tanking is also far worse than straight up dodging, so his high HP means squat, even though he has better dodge than the Leper. And having the lowest speed is just bad, as it is arguably the most important stat in the game
Lol best comment and response , I dont think they even got past the tutorial and just looked up descriptions on the characters to waffle about with no actual physical gameplay context.
@@jacobhoover1654 That's 4 dots of stress heal, at a slim chance that even stress-heal anyone. And that's like ~30% chance to get a crit, if you got yourself a good set-up for this hero and fully upgraded. And knowing, how the game usually not kind to positive RNG, that won't be common at all. 'Gallows Humor' not good enough whole party stress-heal for 4 actions taken as 3/4 chance for -20 & addition chance to get 25% on top with +10 stress. Can be used in emergency for self-stress-heal, or when you have camped at the end of the mission.
You will arrive at the tier list. Its stanzas wind with a troubling, serpent-like suggestion through the corrupted reviewer's mind. Leading only, I fear, to ever more tenebrous places. There is a sickness in the shallow pitted paragraphs of the tier list and on its writhing words, you will face viciousness, violence, and perhaps other damnably transcendent terrors. So steel yourself and remember: there can be no bravery without madness. The website will take you to hell, but in that gaping abyss we will find our memes
The very reason Red Hook give you the Crusader and Highway man is because they are simple to use and understand. For fuck sake, Dismas has a knife and gun, Reynauld is in armor with a big sword... it's not hard to understand what they can do...
In my opinion tiering characters like this in DD doesn't make any sense. Most important things in this game are synergsies between them. Antiquarian as sole helo can be weak, but mixed with other heroes or placed multiple Times in a team can create a very strony team. You must experimate with mixing heroes for Good combinations. Good example of this is second floor of Darkest Dungeon itself. You are forced to have guard or suffer loss of one members of team. You have many options to build your Squad for this - in my run i Choose only a Houndmaster and an Antiquarian due to lack of guarding heroes in my roster (i lost my Men-At-Arms on one of bosses before and i have not replacment yet) and Antiquarian was lacking special trinket, but still could "redirect" Revelation to other teammates, evebtually be guarded by Houndmaster. Not sole hero matters, but teams and experimenting with builds
Yeah, a definetly much better tier-list for heroes would be not a ranking one, but rather a compass-like graph. Because it can actually show their utilities here and there, instead of burning down to nigh-impossible-to-do ranking of "who are you gonna use for the entire game and who's utterly useless" (like this tier-list), because every class have situations when they're better and worse.
That's why class with versatility is better the most part, you only need special role class in specific boss battle or dungeon, the more general the hero use is the better they are in "general" tier list.
Leper is mediocre alone due to low accuracy, but combine them with a Man at arms or Jester and raise their accuracy to start mowing through hordes (bonus points if they become focused or powerful). Darkest Dungeon lives on that kind of thing.
@@jackmoseley4959 Exactly. My 2nd team is based around the Leper with Vestal 4th, Man at arm 3rd, Highwayman 2nd and Leper 1st. I'm mowing everything with the Leper being buffed by Man at arm constantly. It's just ridiculous how tanky they both are and how i'm just oneshotting everything on sight. It ain't my favorite team, but they are a solid #2 there for me.

Crusader at 16 *holy music stops* But fr i see crusader as a vanguard unit and his versatility is what makes him good. Good damage, tankiness, heals, stress heals, infinite torchlight; and frankly Stand Tall, Zealous Speech, and Zealous Vigil are very strong camping skills
I was spamming shadow fade as soon as I learned how to use her, it’s crazy how people think that near double damage higher dodge stealth (and I think something else) as a setup, to then deal an obscene amount of damage the next is bad.
Im pretty sure when he says that characters fall off at mid-lategame that was because he was lacking their trinkets and how to properly use them. To be fair a shieldbreaker with trash trinkets in lategame is not that great. Also would be nice to know in which areas he used the characters. In his defense I played like 300hours+ in this game and thought flagellant is the nr1 character by far. This game has alot of stuff to learn. But yea I never thought highwayman is one of the worst, whereever I took him he slaughtered enemies
Crossbow woman is not a specialist. If you give her some heal trinkets and stack battlefield bandage on someone, it adds up really fast. To the point you're pumping out 12 - 18 heals with her. She also really shines with houndmaster's mark, and will absolutely decimate bosses with it. This tier list is whack as fuck
"He's great if you have heroes like arbalest or graverobber, but pair him with someone like the leper and it's just annoying." Battle ballad jester + leper absolutely destroying anything in their way: are you sure about that?
You know, in a list about Fire Emblem Three Houses they placed *a healing spell* in the top ten strongest weapons list. Seeing the crusader in 16 is somehow even more insulting.
I used to exclusively transform him, but then I started doing it only when necessary to conserve stress, like for a boss battle or for a battle that's got him on death's door
Kind of wish we got another dedicated healing class. At first I thought it was the occultist but several 0 heals later I realized that wasnt the case. I wish there was more variety so I dont have only vestial for my dedicated healing
- Arbalest (she buffs healing received, and has a healing trinket) - Occultist (he is, on average number, an amazing healer. You just have to be ready to sometimes have 0) - Crusader (healing from any position, stress and HP) - Plague doctor (healing + dot removal is often superior to pure healing, because DOT add up very quickly and is very threatening at death door) - Antiquarian (though kinda bad, she is enough to put someone out of Death door. You can feed the person up to health after combat) - Flagellant (healing over time is insane, and his % healing is also very strong) Not counting all the characters that can self-heal and thus diminish the need for a healer (houndmaster, leper, abomination, hellion). Healing is not something you have to do all the time. Healing is something you have to do : - When someone is at death door - When the fight is over and you are prolonging it to get some ressource back I'd much rather have a team with no "dedicated healer" but 2 or 3 off-healers than the opposite. It means i have more people able to emergency heal (so i don't get screwed if the vestal is stunned), and i have more stuff to do on my "stalling turns".
I will say, as someone who used to be in the "Crusader doesn't do any one thing better than anyone else" crowd, I imagine a lot of newer players probably run into the roadblock of Reynauld's kleptomania, which kind of kills any interest in the class from the jump. Here's this dude who misses often in the beginning, gets easily stressed out, and steals what could have been really useful loot at almost every opportunity-it's only natural that people are put off by him. But getting past that (by waiting for the funds/time to cure his quirk or dumping him and getting a new Crusader) generally resolves the initial frustration. I've done a complete 180 with regards to my opinion of him, and realized he's probably one of the most valuable assets to any team I bring to any region.
Meanwhile, I end up successfully running with an all Crusader team because I can. It’s stupidly effective when you have a bunch of armoured sword wielding zealots murdering anything and everything in the Ruins.
I really like how the dude was bashing Arbalest for being glued to back row, but put Hellion on 1st place, despite her being basically glued to front ranks. Lovely consistency. Generalists are bad, except when they aren't. It reeks of something written without much planning or thinking.
One problem with Riposte (i.e. Highwayman) in the later game is that its Accuracy never scales up with his level. Its accuracy stays at sub-Leper levels going into the late-game, it's just not noticed usually on account of his usually being fitted out with +ACC trinkets by that point to at least somewhat off-set it. That said, he has exactly middle of the road HP (23-43 is the median/9th place among 17 last I checked) and above average Dodge, and no particular weaknesses as far as Resistances goes (even if only Trap Resist is "good".) He also has access to +Dodge self-Buffs through Unparalled Finesse, and a lot of his trinkets which help with Dodge. So, I'd call him one of the _tougher,_ more survivable units all things considered, even if it's not immediately obvious. Edit: Okay so I was going to leave it at that, until I saw "Jester is awful with Leper". Dear Gods, what are they teaching kids these days.
You know what, this article was my first guide to Darkest Dungeon. And I firmly believed Crusader was crap. It's not until I found the triple dancing Crusader team with the Holy Lance that I think otherwise. And then the more I played the character, the more I think the article itself is the crappy one.
>Crusader 16 NON NOBIS DOMINE! *_LAST CRUSADE INTENSIFIES_* *_TRIPPLE HOLY LANCE IN THE NAME OF GOD!_* Crusader is my absolute favorite class, easily. He's genuinely good, and those who call him trash are trash themselves. I know I'm not great at this game but jeeeeeezzzeeee this is painful.
'Crusader's not good at any one thing.' Umm, excuse me, he smites things back to oblivion constantly. HOW IS THAT NOT BEING GOOD AT SMITING THINGS BACK TO OBLIVION? He's also extremely good at stress-healing sooooo, this person's brain already seems baked, let's watch the rest of this trainwreck.

I also think I don’t drink enough water. 9: Abomination is bad because I have painted myself into a corner because I put the best stress healers lower on the list than this one and he causes stress which I can’t now deal with because I never use jester or crusader. This article is the hill my father died on. 8: The Flagellant is mr mixup; selfish and not selfish; useful and needs to be babysat; blonde and brunette. (You guys have those, right?) 5: Bounty Hunter is good. I’m done with Bounty Hunter’s section now. 4: Vestal is a healer. I’m so tired. 3: Houndmaster is a generalist but he has a good boi so he’s here, not like stinky crusader. 2: plague doctor is the best stunner, the best stunner and the best stunner. 1: Hellion is the best. I mean , this is a pretty terrible tier list but I gotta give him something for putting Hellion n1 ^^ It"s my favorite character. My playstyle is usually to not bring a stress healer and rely on camping and negating stress from the get go. So to me sniping the backline is a key factor in my team building , so you can imagine how often I rely on hellions to quicky get rid of the stress caster on 4rth row. I m not gonna tell u the strengh she has cause u know them as much if not more than I do but to me and personal preference aside she is clearly a top5 character. If i had to do my personal top 5 it would be : 1. Vestale cause she makes me feel safe pretty much anywhere I go. 2. Hellion , imo the best frontlaner with access to iron swan and double stun on frontlane. Has insane trinckets and good camping skills for boss fights or destress at the end of a dungeon. 3. Houndmaster , can fit in anyteam, anywhere , and will always perform good. 4. Highwayman , best dps char in the game , good camping skills. 5. Jester , very good in the farmstead and crimsom court. Also good in regular dungeons when the difficulty rise up. Thx for the video bro was a lot of fun to watch u trash this article. But honestly for players like us who played thousands of hours that was pretty laughable ^^
I think in apprentice and veteran dungeons you can do that. And that's what I msotly did. But it seems in champion dungeons you just *have to* bring. a stress healer. Very hard to get away with not bringing one.
I agree , that s what I wanted to say when i wrote "when the difficulty rise up". In vet dungeons or Bloodmoon playthrough etc it becomes almost mandatory.
"my favorite character is number 1 in their opinion so it's okay if they have the dumbest takes" My brother in christ, you are projecting onto a fictional character, cease thy jests, lest I burst asunder my side plates!
Lunge opener is superior to shadow fade when you can use it to immediately kill slot 3. Shadow fade is powerful, loading a shadow fade's damage into next turn with high crit potential, and getting a dodge buff thereafter, but if your lunges are capable of killing slot 3 immediately, that's a massive tempo gain and it should be taken. Am I right, or am I missing something.
20:20 You're forgetting a whole part of the playerbase when you think this author watched your video - people who haven't played enough of the game to realize that you can set up grave robber in the backline to instantly lunge, and are instead putting her in the front to shadow fade because they haven't had that level of creative thought yet. I'd know, that's how I used Grave Robber the first time I picked her up without watching any videos.
the problem is that the gap between the good heroes and the bad ones is so small and rating them pretty much doesn't make sense. every hero can thrive with the right team comp/setup. there are some very good universal must haves that work with anything but there are no outright bad heroes
Grave robber - one of the best stress healers With an abundance (one, there's just one) of reliable (not reliable at all) stress healing abilities that can be used almost all the time (only at camp, once)
I've come around on shadow fade. I used to think it was a waste because it's so important to eliminate enemies on the first turn. However it works pretty well with highwaymen riposte because it can help direct enemy attacks to him. Then on her second turn she basically gets her first turn back because of the double damage buff. So she can pretty reliably one shot whatever threat is remaining
I've never slept on shadow fade. "I can't be targetted, double my damage" seems like objectively good use of a turn in a game like D&D, and it's never led me wrong in other games lol
20:30 Grave Robber, Highwayman, Man-at-Arms for buffing/stunning/riposting or Crusader for healing/Holy Lance and a placeholder (sometimes a Jester for more buffs or a dedicated backliner) is one of my favorite teams to run and more often then not I'm using Shadow Fade and Lunge to move the party around then anything else. I haven't really talk to other people who played the game before so I didn't even realized that people thought that it was a terrible skill, maybe I just like seeing big crits too much?

Looking at some of the ways people think about strategizing in this game, no wonder so many are calling it unfairly brutal. I mean, whenever I lost party members, it was because I willingly did a dumb mistake or tried my luck and the only one I could blame for that was myself or my lack of knowledge. It's not that bad if you learn to play by DD's rules. But that's the thing. I think too many people are afraid to play by the rules of the games and instead choose "safe" solutions they're familiar with or make assumptions about the game that don't hold up.
Characters like Crusader HM or MAA might not be the best of the best in every combat situation but they're characters that work decently almost always Darkest dungeon isn't just the combat it's also the planning and week to week strategizing, having characters that can always fill a slot regardless of who they're paired with is priceless I always end up with a bunch of HMs and Crusaders by the time I reach end game content simply because I recruit new ones to team with lower level guys because the old ones reach high levels fast due to how often they're utilized, since they don't care who they're with and have stuns and stress heals
Highwayman 3rd worst? Outclassed in mid game?? Excuse me? In my stygian file I brought 2 HWM with good trinkets into DD1 quest and they absolutely destroyed every enemy we encountered. Other comps featuring Jester and Leper, even not together, are fucking astounding. Jester absolutely carries in Crimson Court with his high bleeds. Leper is a goddamn unmovable force. They'll die someday but I'll know em as my MVPs forever
His argument about crusader reminds me of having to kill swine prince with plague/jester/crusader/leper since my vestal was gambling, but the swine prince would give sacred scroll
Crusader had to be the main healer and I managed to not only kill the prince, but also clear the dungeon
Then vestal chose to keep gambling an extra week then gambled the scroll away
"Unnerved, unbalanced..."
@Soul of Cinder put the gunslinger's buckle and a crit trinket = stress healing.

*Playable at any damn position, which is the most important part of his versatility.

Hahaha "she's not the best class, but she's certainly not the worst" this has some BIG junior high energy
Pretty much. There's no bad hero in Darkest Dungeon. There's only bad synergies & positioning.

Im pretty sure when he says that characters fall off at mid-lategame that was because he was lacking their trinkets and how to properly use them. To be fair a shieldbreaker with trash trinkets in lategame is not that great. Also would be nice to know in which areas he used the characters. Getting strategy from a site like that is like getting your news from a USA Today newspaper.
"He's great if you have heroes like arbalest or graverobber, but pair him with someone like the leper and it's just annoying."
Battle ballad jester + leper absolutely destroying anything in their way: are you sure about that?
You know, in a list about Fire Emblem Three Houses they placed *a healing spell* in the top ten strongest weapons list. Seeing the crusader in 16 is somehow even more insulting.
Someone hasn't discovered space cocaine yet.
I have a theory, they wrote those articles wrong at poupose, something awfully wrong drags way more atention that something right
Its like 17 different people were told to describe one character, then they just put them in random order.
And one of the 17 people didn’t have any playtime on the game whatsoever
Grave Robber *has* a stress heal. Everyone -50 stress whenever they see her exotic body.
I legit don't ever want to transform the abomination guy, because he is really awesome in human form and also I just feel so bad for him :')
Yeah, just let him vomit on fish and skeletons.
I used to exclusively transform him, but then I started doing it only when necessary to conserve stress, like for a boss battle or for a battle that's got him on death's door
I always find it funny that the court jester who killed his court pairs well with the self exiled king
The problem with ranking instead of a tier list is that none of the heroes are bad.
Kind of wish we got another dedicated healing class. At first I thought it was the occultist but several 0 heals later I realized that wasnt the case. I wish there was more variety so I dont have only vestial for my dedicated healing
Flagelant
- Arbalest (she buffs healing received, and has a healing trinket)
- Occultist (he is, on average number, an amazing healer. You just have to be ready to sometimes have 0)
- Crusader (healing from any position, stress and HP)
- Plague doctor (healing + dot removal is often superior to pure healing, because DOT add up very quickly and is very threatening at death door)
- Antiquarian (though kinda bad, she is enough to put someone out of Death door. You can feed the person up to health after combat)
- Flagellant (healing over time is insane, and his % healing is also very strong)
Not counting all the characters that can self-heal and thus diminish the need for a healer (houndmaster, leper, abomination, hellion).
Healing is not something you have to do all the time. Healing is something you have to do :
- When someone is at death door
- When the fight is over and you are prolonging it to get some ressource back
I'd much rather have a team with no "dedicated healer" but 2 or 3 off-healers than the opposite. It means i have more people able to emergency heal (so i don't get screwed if the vestal is stunned), and i have more stuff to do on my "stalling turns".
That's why installing additional character mods is beneficial and fun. Lamia and Librarian are strong supports.

It feels like this was written by three different people who never communicated with each other whatsoever.
Dog treats are always the first item I switch out when my inventory gets full. I just never remember to use it, so I gave up
One problem with Riposte (i.e.

My brother in christ, you are projecting onto a fictional character, cease thy jests, lest I burst asunder my side plates!
Grave robber - one of the best stress healers
With an abundance (one, there's just one) of reliable (not reliable at all) stress healing abilities that can be used almost all the time (only at camp, once)
Humans > Monkeys > Bacteria >>>>>>>>>>> Journalists

Darkest dungeon isn't just the combat it's also the planning and week to week strategizing, having characters that can always fill a slot regardless of who they're paired with is priceless
I always end up with a bunch of HMs and Crusaders by the time I reach end game content simply because I recruit new ones to team with lower level guys because the old ones reach high levels fast due to how often they're utilized, since they don't care who they're with and have stuns and stress heals
Highwayman 3rd worst? Outclassed in mid game?? Excuse me? In my stygian file I brought 2 HWM with good trinkets into DD1 quest and they absolutely destroyed every enemy we encountered. These game journalists are hurting my brain
I think I died inside when I saw they said pairing Jester with Leper is bad
29:03 "do you see how QUICKLY THE TIDE TURNS"
dude crusader is literally good at everything. he's not even average at all the things he does he's really good at all of them too with proper builds.
I started playing the game a few days ago and read that article and tried farming the ruins with those "top tier characters" only to get frustrated at how I couldn't deal at all with stress, then I read another article that suggested going 3 crusaders and 1 plague doctor for the ruins.
I wasn't disappointed by my "shit tier" characters
Imagine being so arrogant the only way you can conceive of someone agreeing with you is that they're secretly ripping off your content, lol...
