@@pinhead62 It was very extenuating circumstances that made for that as the ONE Exception to All other Mickey Mouse Shorts still protected by Disney with a previously thought to be Iron Grip.
Everybody's so obsessed with Steamboat Willie that they forgot to to look into Mickey Mouse's REAL debut cartoon here in "Plane Crazy" and meme on it.
Fun Fact: The personality Mickey had in this episode had people really annoyed and upset because of how he was portrayed. So they then changed Mickey’s personality to be a little more kinder and his old personality would inspire the creation of Donald Duck.
Yeesh! I can't remember a time when Donald was EVER abusive to Daisy! Usually, she's abusing him!
Much like how Popeye in the Thimble Theatre comic strip was portrayed. The syndicate that owned the feature told E.C. Segar to tone him down and not be such a brawler and hellraiser. He did, and introduced Poopdeck Pappy who was even worse.
@@lawrencelewis2592 Even in the Betty Boop cartoon that brought him into the world of animation, he initially comes off as a bit of a ruffian (who eats his spinach) as he's singing his theme song.
@@videogollumer Very true- have you read the comic strips? There are so many characters that never made it into the cartoons. it took me over 20 years to get all the Thimble Theatre comic anthologies that cover all the daily and sunday strips from 1929 to 1938. Great stuff!
@@lawrencelewis2592 No, but I heard Popeye had a tendency to un-alive people that got on his bad side in them. I also heard that a number of characters in the 80s live-action film that starred Robin Williams as Popeye were originally from the comic strip.
Just so you all know, only the early version of Mickey Mouse from 1928 is now in the public domain. However, the character is still trademarked by Disney (which limits usage that could lead an observer to believe a product is from Disney), and later works featuring Mickey Mouse remain under copyright protection for the time being.
I doubt Disney's lawyers will do anything since the silent version can have audio added. Trying to fight the official audio version would be a waste of time and resources since it's public domain is a year out.
this version of mickey is not under trademark since the first usage of it is public domain.
Disney is already circling the drain
I thought only Steamboat Willie is Public Domain.
@@all-stargamer3333 There are 2 other films that were made the same year as Steamboat Willie. You can find the info on Wikipedia.
And people thought Mickey was a jerk in Steamboat Willie! Pah!
He literally sa'd minnie in this one
@@LinkRammer Pfft! You could out right say he TORMENTED Minnie in this one! She doesn't give him a smooch when he asks for one; so he gives her a life-threatening scare, LAUGHS at her trauma, has the audacity to ask for a smooch again, and forcefully takes one once refused again! WHY did he think that would work in the first place?! It makes Bowser look like a GENTLEMAN!

Charles Lindbergh's famous flight was in 1927 so at the time this was actually a pretty topical cartoon. I think I also caught a reference to 1927's Wings, which was the first ever best picture Oscar winner
Kindly point that out to me. I've seen Wings but not in a long time.
@@lawrencelewis2592 I'm not 100% sure because it's been a while since I've seen it so it's possible I'm thinking of the wrong movie but around the 4:10 mark I do remember a scene involving a plane and a steeple. That aerial shot at 5:15 also looks very similar to a shot from the movie that also ends in a similar crash
@@gugurupurasudaikirai7620 I think you may be right. I need to see Wings again. I recently saw Howard Hughe's Hell's Angels and that was great.

Mickey, a hot dog vendor, meets and quickly falls for Minnie the "Shimmy Dancer". (The first cartoon in which Mickey Mouse speaks.)
• 3. "The Chain Gang" (1930, Newly-Restored)

Wow, I never noticed before how much animal abuse there was in all three of the 1928 Mickey shorts (Plane Crazy, Gallopin' Gaucho, Steamboat Willie).
May I add, PAINLESS animal abuse
In the case of Plane Crazy, it's probably because we're to busy being distracted by the fact that the Mickey is treating Minnie like dirt.
@@videogollumer It's certainly a recurring theme, but this one has only two instances of it (only one if you don't cont the guy being used as a rubber band, as he seems to be doing it voluntarily) while on "Willie" it's most of the runtime.
@@Mick_92 If you're implying that the other is the cow, that was largely accidental.

Yeah, that's so innovative! 3D movies before 3D!
Technically, only the visuals of this short are in the public domain as that was actually produced in 1928. The audio, on the other hand, is still copyrighted until next year, since it was made a year after the visuals were. So, technically, you could get a copyright claim on this video, but just for the audio.
The sound version of Plane Crazy is not public domain yet, be careful.

Best be careful, apparently this short being Public Domain only applies to the silent version, so this is still prime for being taken down by Disney.
It fascinates me that they use almost exclusively songs that were public domain (or equivalent) at the time. But if we try to use mickey whistling 90 years later it's a problem.

5:18
Wait, the sound version is in copyright until next year.
Plane Crazy released in 1928, so it’s in the public domain.
If we're going by sound, that's a different law, the Music Modernization Act. That could mean even Steamboat Willie would still have a sound copyright until 2029.
Mickey: But if I respect women I would never do anything without their consent
Also Mickey: 4:20
The audio version of plane crazy is going to go to public domain in 2025 if you don’t know
The reason of a date of 2025 because the audio version of the film was released in 1929 and the silent version was released in 1928, you can own the silent version, but you can’t own the audio version because Disney will actually strike you because it’s still copyrighted
