The thing about Roadmaps is that they’re always revealed right after awful news or are hyped up only to have two pieces of meaningful content. They’re great tools for audience retention and hype but have been misused into oblivion.
Honestly Deep Rock Galactic does seasonal updates quite good since each season so far has added new events and weapons alongside a boatload of cosmetics all the while making it all free except for some cosmetic DLCs Not to mention that once a season ends all its content is still available and playable, cosmetics still have other means of getting obtained, evens are only made rarer so as to not hog the focus and all the weapons are still usable And keep mind that in the context of DRG a weapon can be customized to incredible lengths so one gun can accommodate at least 5 different playstyles on its own Not to mention the QoL stuff like adding an extra cosmetic focused mineral so you don't have to spend gold and other minerals you'd rather use on upgrades and overclocks to the weapons to create those afform mentioned playstiles Even then, without the seasons the game is still very much complete and has enough content on its own for a good 200 hours, at least for me
It adds nothing worth talking about most of the time, just reskinned weapons and content from past games. This is just typical Nintendo at this point. The worst part is they aren't pushing those resources into server stability or optimization At the end of the day, most will still abandon the game once they stop the content updates. Becoming a distant memory and falling into the same trap as every other server/season based online multiplayer game. Just like Splatoon 1 + 2
@@StitchySpooks well yeah, the weapons are reskinned, but that's because it has a completely different kit from other variations of itself. I can kinda get why people would say that most people would stop playing once they stop updating a game, but that's just kinda true for almost every online game
Hopefully players start to notice the patterns in these kinds of games, and decide to look for something with quality over quantity. Also, couldn't believe you didn't mention Rain World in this video. It's the perfect example of a game that got every player interested again with a huge content update.
I was just thinking "Do I watch this video or a match of Friends vs. Friends", so glad I didn't have to compromise. I agree that the roadmap feature can still be good when it's just an indev game or something laying out their plans or otherwise a studio who feasibly would take ages to produce actual content packs. This all feels like a symptom of the push for games to retain your full attention and loyalty at all times and making sure you're obligated to put in time constantly to get all the content. Nowadays the drip feed mechanism is almost exclusively used to keep people sticking around but never feeling like they can leave, as a completionst it's what makes me bounce off games like that: knowing I can decide between having all the items or any free time. The worst is that these roadmaps feel like when big companies use them it's to excuse a lack of content and get people to defend them with "Well give it 6 months and there'll be all these things and it'll be great!", defending a version of the game that doesn't exist is some next level mind games and also the only way to make it possible to defend Overwatch 2 as a good game.
A game with seasons that don’t feel like drip feeding is Deep Rock Galactic. It’s a co-op hoard shooter about mining on a planet filled with alien bugs. Also the player characters are funny dwarves that insult each other constantly. I really want to see a review of it on one of your channels.
roadmaps on their own are a good thing. it's transparency from the devs to the community. the problem is when they abandon it or it's just completely wrong
Keep up the good work Foekoe, this video made me realise how you keep the positivity up rather than keeping up with the slop. So thanks and hope you keep doing that since we really need more and we should be talking about things we like rather than don't.
I feel like deep rock galactic has mastered the seasons system, the battle pass is COMPLETELY FREE and everything tgat you don't get is obtainable (again, for free) after the season ends The way they get money is by the cosmetic dlcs that get released every season

Shoutout to DRG, they have seasons and a battle pass, but it’s completely free and all the items from the previous season go into the regular loot pool
Monster hunter also uses roadmaps, but they tease us with new content updates. idk if foekoe has experience with this, but one of the worst culprits in terms of ruining their content drop system was destiny. destiny 1 started fairly rocky but launched multiple massive expansions that revamped the entire game over its lifespan, and once destiny 2 launched (even worse of a launch than d1) people were very concerned about the content drops, as the first 2 expansions were incredibly subpar, but the 3rd expansion for destiny 2 was incredible, however it introduced a somewhat seasonal model of content and that game started falling down the slippery slope of drip feed, and from one year after the 3rd expansion (which was 2018) until now, the game has felt so forced and painful to invest time into, they just remove all the content that they add so the quality is horrible as they know its going to be gone from the game in a year or less (some entire seasonal expansions only are in the game 3 or 4 months before theyre fully removed at the next yearly dlc)
i think half the people these days either eat up these bits and pieces spat out by devs. or they're bored as hell and started complaining and be sad and whatever. i'm also the 2nd one, sadly.

I don't think Fortnite is comparable to all these other games drip feeding, they add a whole lot of changes at the start of the season that drastically change how the game plays, whether that be with new items/lootpool or new locations, and they continue to add or change more things throughout the season every other week, as well as new cool cosmetics every week, whereas with games like Overwatch 2, they'll add a new character and maybe a new map at the start of the season if you're lucky, but besides that the game feels exactly the same every single update, and the "content" they give your throughout the season is basically just new cosmetics and thats about it
I’m really surprised you didn’t bring up destiny 2 for drip feed
Roadmap good if it isn’t for like the next five years
