I have same shotgun but having a hard time finding action tube ... I purchase forend at ATI and yup no action tube . do you have any link ? Thanks in advance
It really is a great shotgun. I shimmed the gap at the metal rail attachment to the forend with very thin brass shims and epoxy. Took a lot of the play out and made it sturdier. Mine is the 88 Security version holding two extra rounds and allows for a bayonet lug mount and end cap to be installed. I do have combat training in close - action bayonet fighting. And yes, there were plenty of times my training opponent bayoneted me along with a few slashes. Rubber bayonet still hurts.
you're welcome. I decided to shoot and post these videos because I wasn't finding REALLY good information on youtube for the Maverick 88 (mostly typical reviews) but there are some good disassembly vids. I had to call and email Maverick and Havlin...they were very helpful. I'm also new to the modifications and thought it would help others to share my mods on the Maverick 88. TH-cam vids helped some...they just needed a little bit more detail. I'm glad the videos helped you. cheers.
Excellent details in the video. Exactly what I am looking into doing. Problem is finding the pieces to install. The action tube has been out of stock so far at all places I have been looking.
Thanks for the sub. Haven't heard of the plastic tubing you refer to. Thanks for the comment. O is still in! But, I don't think it would have mattered. I like the Mav. For the price, it's a great start for home defense. Thanks for watching.

I've heard that some 500's have the molded forend grip but I've never seen one. I've also heard some Mav88's have tube end nut assemblies but I've never seen one of them either. My Mav had the molded one. I did have to order each separately. Can you see then end nut on your shotgun? If so, you don't need to purchase anything except a new grip.
I got lucky finding an unfired maverick 88 at a pawnshop for $119 out the door. If that wasn't good enough mine turned out to be one of the models with a forend nut like the mossberg 500. Apparently certain chain stores like walmart stock these from time to time you just have to know what to look for. It will save you money in the long run not having to switch the whole assembly. You can spot the forend nut sticking up without even having to handle the gun
HI mwoo888. I really haven't noticed any difference in the smoothness of the action after installing the new action tube. Thanks for watching, liking, favoriting, subscribing and commenting.
Whoa. sorry. you mean Maverick didn't have the parts available? I just clicked on the Mako parts and Amazon says they're both in stock. did you try Havlin Sales? With the latest gun buying mayhem maybe their out of stock at Maverick and Havlin?
It's a pretty simple procedure. If you know how to clean your shotgun, you know that you'll have to remove the forend grip. Everything else is pretty easy. Just slide your new grip onto your new action tube assembly and then tighten the tube end nut. The reason I made the video is because I saw many conflicting comments on other videos saying this wasn't possible or that it was too hard to accomplish. This is not true. It's a very easy process. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Awesome, thanks man. Any other aftermarket parts or accessories you would recommend for the 88? I've got a pistol grip + adjustable stock, but I use the original stock often as well. Just looking to have a little more fun when I go out shooting with my buddies.
Excellent instructional video. I plan to do this modification on my Maverick 88 as well as I think that long-term, a metal-to-metal connection between the rails and forend tube will be more robust than metal-to-plastic. One thing I'm curious about is wear on the mag tube. The original forend appears to have plastic-to-metal contact between the action tube and the mag tube. What can you tell us about the contact between the metal action tube you installed and the mag tube, and how that might affect the bluing on the mag tube?
ChicagoJohn The wear should be "normal". The new action tube is ordered is an original manufactured tube from Mossberg. This is what is used on their 590 model. The wear on the mag tube would be as it would be with other Mossberg products. I did decide to re-install the original 88 grip. If you haven't already please visit my main channel and check out "My Maverick 88" playlist. I posted a video review last year on all my Maverick 88 accessories after using it during a 6 hour Fighting Shotgun class. Thanks for watching and the thumbs up.
MrMnmn911 Following up, is there a reason you decided to go back to the original forend? I now have an action tube and extended nut for it, but haven't yet installed it. If it doesn't offer any advantages in terms of making the action less binding, for example, I'm thinking I'll stick with the factory molded forend for now too. Just curious as to your reasons for switching back to it.
ChicagoJohn Hi. Yeah I determined while taking a 6 hour "Fighting Shotgun" class that it wasn't going to work for me. You can watch my final review of all the mods I made my Mav88 from "My Maverick 88" playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLABzhv4GLfjRUErzFkgNdeBFevVSOl8uC.html
I just found out that My Mossberg 500 uses the same forend as the Mav 88, with the rails molded into the plastic. I was thinking about swapping the forend for a nicer one, but I'm wondering if the Mav 88 forend is preferable to an upgrade in a couple of ways (besides cost) - it makes the gun lighter (no steel action tube) and it doesn't wear off the finish of the mag tube as much as a metal action tube would. Is the action smoother after you installed the the steel action tube?
Where do you get the parts?. I have the Maverick 88 12 ga with the molded slide grip. Can't seem to find any of the action slide tube assemblies and nuts anywhere have looked all over the internet.
I don't know why Mossberg puts chinsy forearms on their guns, really how much more would it be to put the much more solid tube on? I have several 500's and am looking at their turkey guns with short barrels. All seem camo and have that junk forearm, not a problem to put good slide tune on. But can't find matching camo fore end. Love the 500 but not cheap plastic fore end.
I ordered a magpul forend for my 88. Can I possibly cut off the plastic forend to expose the action slide so I don’t have to buy a 70 dollar action slide and only buy a ring for the slide
If you're completely certain that your particular serial number is one that was manufactured with the full slide. Some were, some were not. I've seen videos where some did what you want to do, and it worked. I've seen some where they cut off the plastic forend only to discover it was not a full action slide. I'd reach out to Mossberg customer service to make sure. They are very helpful. I mean really, really helpful. Hope this helps.
I put a 7 5/8'' action slide with a vintage walnut corncob forearm and stock, on my Maverick 88, it does not mare or scratch up the mag tube. it functions perfectly. the wood furniture added a little weight but that helps ease recoil, adding the wood furniture and the new action slide improved the look and function of the already good looking and great functioning shotgun.
@@drewhiphop Everything I have read on the subject says yes.. You need a 7 3/4'' to a 7 5/8' action slide. Did that tube end nut come with the new action slide you bought? Just curious, because I have a Mossberg 500 and I'm wanting that exact same forend, and I didn't know I'd have to buy a new action tube. Thank you for the video!
hmmm. Not sure about the reason for the looseness. I do know it does not affect the Maverick's pump operation. The Maverick 88 is a great shotgun, you'll love it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi 1wickekd2008 that is a tube end nut wrench, also called a castle key. It's used like a screwdriver to insert into the slots of the tube end nut so you can turn the nut to take it off and tighten it back on. They don't cost too much. If you absolutely can't afford one, you can use anything else you can find around the house. Some people use a butter knife which works perfectly. Thanks for watching and liking.
my frien. I have a question for you, I have a maverick 88 and I just bought a tactical kit on amazon, do u think if I buy the 500A action slide 7-5/8" = $48 it works with my kit??? I thanks u in advanced for ur help.
I wouldn't use epoxy. I have seen a vid somewhere on yt by someone that drilled some holes on his original forend and just attached some picatinny rails...but I never found a vid on how it worked out. I really do suggest changing the forend. You're doing something to a weapon that fires an explosive bullet. I'd save the money and do it right. I wouldn't want it to malfunction on me when I needed it most...but that's just my humble opinion.
So basically, you had to order a new action slide then fit your third-party forend on it? I picked up a custom forend from someone at a gun show without knowing that it was more involved getting on my 88. Thanks for the video!
not all 88s came with the cheap pinned action slide. i have an older 88 and it has the very same action slide as the 500 . if i wanted to change it i just screw the end cap off and change it. i bought mine at kmart 25 or so years ago. i think they where made a little better then. i gave only $150 new.
Good information Joker 13621. Thanks for posting it. Another great reason the Maverick 88 is a great deal. Even right out of the box it's a great shotgun. I might get a 6 round Mav next. thanks for liking and subscribing. ':o)
So it is common for these to come with a loose forend and even if you change it it still will be loose correct? Thanks just picked 1 up and wanted to make sure.
Do you have a video on how to take it off? I just bought my first gun which happens to be a maverick 88. The only thing is it doesn't have that rod on the side where it ejects the casings? Do you know if that's how some came or? Edit: I just checked out my maverick and the action slide has the End nutt? Anyone know why it also appears to have the original action slide.
See the video description for the action slide you would need. I don't know if there is a wood forend for the Maverick 88. But any part that fits the 500 or 590 will work. I suggest you email Mossberg for specific information. They are extremely helpful.
Im considering buying a maverick 88, If I do I plan to put a grip on the slide just like you showed in this video. With that being said, firstly would you recommend me buying the 88 and secondly how much did it cost you to replace the original slide? thanks man good vid
+Bubbs The Maverick 88 is an excellent buy. I don't recall how much I paid for the replacement slide. I believe it was around $56. I ordered my new tube/slide from Halvlin Sales.
+Bubbs Got one a few months ago did a few videos with the mods ive put on it. Need to make a new video for the light, laser, and scope/ saddle mount I got. The shotgun is great haven't had any problems at all.
I'm having a really hard time getting the nut to thread on. I got the tube hammered all the way in, and thread is showing on three of the four sides. But its that little bit at the bottom that I can't get it to thread on. Any tips?
MrMnmn911 hey man thanks a ton for the reply. I made a Reddit post about it and included a photo album of my situation imgur.com/a/6eW8M It's hard to see but the little notch on the very bottom is the one that's not giving me room to thread it, the other three have room.
I'd try using the rubber mallet on it to see if you can get it to go the rest of the way. Looks like you have just a tad bit to go. Let me know how it goes, or if you figure it out. Thanks.
+John Smith I just did this work early this week and was having the same issue. I removed the tube again from forend. Then I marked the portion of the nut and tube where is it supposed to start threading. After inserting the tube on forend and trying again, it took a while but I finally got it smoothly. Be patient as cross-threading will render the tube unusable.
Yes. That is exactly the Maverick 88 that I have. If you haven't already please check out My Maverick 88 playlist on my main TH-cam channel page. It has all my videos from first purchase to a final accessories review after taking a 6 hour "Fighting Shotgun" class. Hope this helps.
You're welcome. Correction. I have the 20 inch barrel not the 18 inch barrel. However, please do check at the Havlin Sales website they have a very thorough instruction on which assembly to purchase. And you can always email them to ensure you're ordering the right one. And you can also visit the Mossberg website and click on the Contact Us link to email them with any quesitons. Both Havlin Sales and the Mossberg people are very helpful.
I think you'll need the 7 5/8" action slide but I'm not certain. You can also measure your original action tube. Here is what I ordered from Halvin Sales. I would email Havlin Sales or Maverick with your question to be certain. I have a link to the Halvin Sales information page in the video description. 500A action slide 7-5/8" = $48 action slide tube nut = $12 shipping = $8 These were the prices at the time I ordered earlier this year. Hope this helps.
I've been watching your video but am still having Problems I have a mossburg 500 and I bought the same forend. It appears when I put it in the threads don't come out enough for me to screw the cap. I have about 1/4 in left of space but I'm met with the same resistance I feel my action tube hits the end of the inside of the forend any ideas? Maybe wrong size I don't know
Hi. When you meet that last resistance, try tapping it with your rubber mallet, or something else. The rubber worked perfectly for me. They only cost about $3.00, so they are worth it, if you don't already have one. so, using a rubber mallet, or something covered with a cloth to prevent any damage to your new tube, hammer it past the resistance. I don't think you'll do any damage if you pound it all the way past. I just choose not to. Then with just enough threads showing, I screwed the end nut onto it. Using the "castle key", I then began tightening the end nut on and this is what will pull the tube the rest of the way through. If you don't have a castle key, a butter knife works great too. Please let me know if this helps. Thanks for watching and a thumbs up.
Thanks for watching MrZombiestopper. I'm glad you found my video helpful. Be sure to watch "My Maverick 88" playlist on my channel. I have other Maverick 88 videos you might find helpful. Thanks for watching, commenting, liking, favoriting and subscribing.

I have it posted in "My Maverick 88" playlist. You can watch from my main TH-cam channel page. However I had already decided to remove this fore grip when I took the class and I explained why. Thanks for watching and liking. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I just have to say this..... The stock forend on the Maverick 88 has NO action tube! It's all plastic! The ribs inside that run from end to end take the place of an action tube. Don't believe me? cut your stock one in half. You won't find any action tub inside.
+MrMnmn911 thanks. Are those parts from havlin sales new and from Mossberg too? I noticed the inside of the action slide tube is crimped/dented quite deep as compared to the same action tubes I bought from Brownells and Mossberg.
the Mako handguard with 3 rails is PR-MO. the Mako vertical pistol grip is AG44-S-B. ordered both from Amazon. links provided in the video description. the action slide you'll need is the 500A 7 5/8" length. I ordered the action slide and the action tube end nut from Havlin Sales. links provided in the video description. Thanks for watching, favoriting, liking and subscribing.
The plastic isn't molded OVER the action tube on the 88...the plastic IS the action tube. Notice how the action bars are pinned into the plastic on the rear, and the ribs molded into the plastic inside the tube.
There are various designs of the Maverick 88 forend. Some are molded OVER the action tube, some are fully plastic, as you've described. When I began making My Maverick 88 videos, I did countless searches on TH-cam of this. There were many, many vidoes of people actually cutting the plastic molding off, and exposing the tube, showing owners that they did not have the buy the action tube and could simply cut off the molding, if they wanted to replace the grip. Some videos did show that that was not true with their model. Mossberg manufactured different tubes.
Do you know how to remove your barrel to clean your shotgun? You have to remove the forend to do that. It's the exact same process. Just remove the original forend and replace it with the new tube and forend grip.
I ordered the forend from Amazon. It's made by Mako. I ordered the new tube assembly and tube end nut from Havlin Sales. Maverick may give you a little lower price. Send them an email they are both reply quick and friendly. Thanks for watching.

Did that tube end nut come with the new action slide you bought? Just curious, because I have a Mossberg 500 and I'm wanting that exact same forend, and I didn't know I'd have to buy a new action tube. Thank you for the video!
Don't get me wrong, great videos!! Liked your resolution to the creep issue.
Thanks for instructions helps a lot .
You're welcome. Thanks for the thumbs up.
hmmm. Not sure about the reason for the looseness. I do know it does not affect the Maverick's pump operation. The Maverick 88 is a great shotgun, you'll love it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
FAB DEFENSE PRMO 870??
I have the 535 I really like the forearm grip it came with it’s a light brown (wood) I was wondering you use the old forearm with the new slide tube?
I put the original forend back on. I prefer it, at the moment.
MrMnmn911 but will the old forearm fix in the slide tube? I want to get rid of the rattle and play it has but I want the keep the wood look it has.
@@tomluna1201 I didn't try using the new tube in the old forend. It's molded onto the tube. I didn't try to remove it.
What size action tube did you use?
Did you ever find out?
@@AGRay445 golly that was forever ago. Pretty sure it was the 7 3/4 version
Thank you for this video, it helped me out a lot
You're welcome. Glad my video helped.
what was that plate thing for laying next to the ring ..and what was it for?
Hi 1wickekd2008 that is a tube end nut wrench, also called a castle key. It's used like a screwdriver to insert into the slots of the tube end nut so you can turn the nut to take it off and tighten it back on. They don't cost too much. If you absolutely can't afford one, you can use anything else you can find around the house. Some people use a butter knife which works perfectly. Thanks for watching and liking.
wat if i just epoxyd a rail with a pistol grip on the original forend?
Does this action length apply to the 18.5 as well?
yes.
Excellent video! You sir have made my day with this information...Thank You and SEMPER FI!
my frien.
I have a question for you, I have a maverick 88 and I just bought a tactical kit on amazon, do u think if I buy the 500A action slide 7-5/8" = $48
it works with my kit???
I thanks u in advanced for ur help.
Mine actually had the end nut but it is an older model late 90's model.
Hi, all the information is in the video description.
Can I do this to the 20-gauge
Yes.
Yes, it’s common. It functions fine. No problems at all.
Thanks
Do you have a video on how to take it off? I just bought my first gun which happens to be a maverick 88. The only thing is it doesn't have that rod on the side where it ejects the casings? Do you know if that's how some came or?
Edit: I just checked out my maverick and the action slide has the End nutt? Anyone know why it also appears to have the original action slide.
MrMnmn911 OK I will do thanks
what action slide would I need to buy to have this done and would I be able to attach a wood forend to it.
See the video description for the action slide you would need. I don't know if there is a wood forend for the Maverick 88. But any part that fits the 500 or 590 will work. I suggest you email Mossberg for specific information. They are extremely helpful.
Ok cool thank you!!!
Any tips?
Hi John, are you using a tube end nut wrench? I'm not certain why you can't get it to tighten all the way.
MrMnmn911 hey man thanks a ton for the reply. I made a Reddit post about it and included a photo album of my situation
imgur.com/a/6eW8M
It's hard to see but the little notch on the very bottom is the one that's not giving me room to thread it, the other three have room.
What size is the ACTION slide assembly
Size is in the video description.
MrMnmn911 thank you for your responce, would it fit on a 18 1/2 Mossberg maverick 88 security
Yes. That is exactly the Maverick 88 that I have. If you haven't already please check out My Maverick 88 playlist on my main TH-cam channel page. It has all my videos from first purchase to a final accessories review after taking a 6 hour "Fighting Shotgun" class. Hope this helps.
Appreciated Thank you so much for the info
500A action slide 7-5/8" = $48
action slide tube nut = $12
shipping = $8
These were the prices at the time I ordered earlier this year.
Hope this helps.
What size did you go with also?
I have the 18" can you please tell me what size tube to buy please
+shaneG5s Check the havlinsales.com website. They are detailed instructions on which one to purchase. Hope this helps.
is the actual slide tube the same as a 500?
Kinda skipped taking it off and on but still pretty cool to know.
My Maverick 88 only has one guide instead of two any one else maverick 88 like that
Great video! Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and liking.
I've been watching your video but am still having
Problems I have a mossburg 500 and I bought the same forend.
Thanks for watching and a thumbs up.
what size action slide is
Still waiting, after three years for a new Maverick 88 barrel from Mossberg. Very poor customer service.
Thanks for watching MrZombiestopper. I'm glad you found my video helpful. Be sure to watch "My Maverick 88" playlist on my channel. I have other Maverick 88 videos you might find helpful. Thanks for watching, commenting, liking, favoriting and subscribing.
Finally, it is a good or bad option?
In the end...it was not a good option for me. You can see my full review of all my Maverick 88 accessories after I took a 6 hour Fighting Shotgun training class. I have it posted in "My Maverick 88" playlist. You can watch from my main TH-cam channel page. However I had already decided to remove this fore grip when I took the class and I explained why. Thanks for watching and liking. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
@@MrMnmn911 hi bro merry christamas an HNY gor you too ...regards from Chile
None of those in the video description has any of the parts.
It's like that on all the mavericks....... I really am tiered of bad or incorrect info I'm a video.
I still haven’t found a good reason to change out this part
Cool.
Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing.
I just have to say this..... The stock forend on the Maverick 88 has NO action tube! It's all plastic! The ribs inside that run from end to end take the place of an action tube. Don't believe me? cut your stock one in half. You won't find any action tub inside.
no fucking shit you idiot! cut? cut your forend open? you can just look at a shotgun and immediately! tell if it's pinned or a action slide tube.
Plz tell me were I get this part
lee stacey Please check the information in the video description.
Is that new action slide assembly a 7 3/4" ?
+ybrik5 It's a 7-5/8. Link in the video description.
+MrMnmn911 thanks. Are those parts from havlin sales new and from Mossberg too? I noticed the inside of the action slide tube is crimped/dented quite deep as compared to the same action tubes I bought from Brownells and Mossberg.
ybrik5 I bought the action slide and tube end nut from Havlin Sales, both new.
Thanks, Cool Video.👍
Easier to instal after forend slide is mounted to gun and you pull forend onto slide afterwards
is the slide tube a ProMag?
No. It is made by Mako.
The tube is made by Mossberg...I think. The forend grip is made by Mako.
the Mako handguard with 3 rails is PR-MO. the Mako vertical pistol grip is AG44-S-B. ordered both from Amazon. links provided in the video description.
the action slide you'll need is the 500A 7 5/8" length.
Great video
Dude why dint you show how to take the thing off?
Do you know how to remove your barrel to clean your shotgun? You have to remove the forend to do that. It's the exact same process. Just remove the original forend and replace it with the new tube and forend grip.
yes I believe so.
You're welcome. Glad the video helped. Thanks for watching.
Would this action tube be compatible for the M-LOK by mag pul
I ordered the forend from Amazon. It's made by Mako. I ordered the new tube assembly and tube end nut from Havlin Sales. Maverick may give you a little lower price. Send them an email they are both reply quick and friendly. Thanks for watching.
