I use every translation I can get my hands on so I can truly identify truth. We should all be doing the same, my prayer for all is that we search God’s word as if it is buried treasure. It’s hard work, but there is no free after reward.

I have 22 translations. I use the John MacArthur study bible in the nkjv as my primary. I have jay p greens kj3 and interlinear Bible, the Septuagint interlinear and my majority text interlinear arrives tomorrow. If my obedience matched my resources, I’d be doing swimmingly

I can tell you, in my experience volunteering to help out in a Bible translation project and being involved in the 2001 project, it's no walk in the park! And I've witnessed a lot of bias in various translations when looking through many manuscripts and interlinears.
It's one thing we try our utmost to avoid. No matter what ideas or theological positions we have. The text, language and culture of the time in relation must always take priority in such projects. And it takes a very, very long time to sift through the noise of years of tradition in ways you've never imagine until you're actually in that space.

I have a unique interest in Bible translation that only began recently. Watchtower has made the Bible in sign language. There is at least one other complete Bible in sign language, but it's owners charge a fee to use it. When I make a video in sign language (coming soon!), I do not want to use Watchtower's video recordings of sign language. So, suddenly, I'm faced with creating my own "translation" of any Bible texts that I quote.

Such a great point about inherent bias of any one particular translation Eric. This is so important for the reader and Bible student to discern. It is also vital to compare spiritual with spiritual(1Cor.2:13).
This video, although quite short, is so excellent and contains so many fine spiritual and scriptural points to consider, that is, if one really wants to know God and his Son.

That was what I got from him, too. I woke up almost four years ago. I read both of Ray Franz' books. Soon afterward, I found Eric's first Spanish-language video, and watched it all the way through. It was a little ironic that I would finish waking up by listening to a video in my second language,... spoken by a Canadian, whose second language was Spanish.

Eric, you explained this subject soo well. I myself like the KJV but I’m not a King James only guy. I use to think the NWT was the most accurate Bible, that is of coarse until I started to compare it to the other translations and then realized it’s actually a pretty sad translation. Yes I do encourage all to compare the different translation but most importantly to ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance when doing so and yes, then the real truth will set you free. Peace 😊

The Living Bible by Tyndale is a good translation due to it being easy to read, you will not want to put it down. But it's also a paraphrase which has to be approached with some caution and a lot of cross referencing with other translations is necessary when you come across some scriptures presented in a way that's unfamiliar.

@@7M-7 It reads MUCH more beautifully and smoothly than both the CSB and the ESV, while retaining the same high literary quality of the ESV or KJV, and it's pretty much open source with extremely generous licensing. The fact that it isn't owned by any particular denominations is also a plus!
@@danielsellers4958 Thank you for that, I am definitely looking for the "ultimate translation", (I'm pretty sure you know what I mean). Right now I am a big fan of "The Living Bible" published by Tyndale, it's a paraphrased edition but it reads very easy,-it flows nicely. I find myself using other translations with it a lot though to verify some of its thoughts on the scriptures...but it's worth picking one up if you happen to come across one. I bought mine off Ebay- the large print edition- because I had been given a very small version that covered just the new testament and loved how it read

I like the 2001 translation as well. So far, I disagreed with only one of their comments in an explanation regarding a scripture. However, in all other aspects so far, I feel this is the best translation I found. I recommend the 2001 translation
When my own reawakening happened a few years back, what Bible translation to use was a challenge for me. I had copies of the NWT but didn’t feel comfortable. I prayed, and soon discovered The Code Bible for Men (sic). But after some six months of study, I realised that I needed to move closer to a translation that was a little bit more orthodox, but also one that contained God’s name. I decided on the Legacy Standard Bible, published by The Lockman Foundation.
The Legacy Standard is a fantastic translation! I bought one and use the LSB app as well. It’s free…I use several translations. My favorites being The ESV, LSB, NASB95, the KJV, and the NKJV.

I dare say impossible until the "2nd coming"? what I mean by this is when Jesus actually sets up his kingdom here on earth we cannot find the complete truth. Until then, I believe we must all strive to do the best we can with what we have to work with. This includes staying away from “Men” and “Organizations” that want you to follow them and to set themselves up and our leaders!
I find it important for each of us to learn from one another and continue to "search" and "dig" and "seek for that pearl of great value" and not stop until Jesus himself tells us personally to do so!
This is a great topic to discuss, and by doing so i think we get closer to that truth we all seek to find.
It's somewhat refreshing to review important topics such as this (Vs "let’s say the Trinity") where the post fills up with so many "Babylonian Trolls" only bent on indoctrinating others with their doctrines’!

I have a collection of Bible's. I love to compare each scripture. It's fun, educational, and inspirational. I would love to have the catholic bible. In the 1970s, my friend found a catholic bible at a yard sale. Many of the chapters are not in the kjv or other bibles. I find it fascinating.
Multiple thanslations is the way for me with the "best ones" first! along with research material and discussion with other truth seekers.

Search "Walter Veith what's the difference between bible versions"- his lecture does a great job of going into the history of the manuscripts and changes made to different translations. My favorite part is at the end where he has people from the audience get on stage with their different versions and compare verses. Some translations have straight-up removed verses altogether. For myself, I've settled on the KJV after seeing how corrupted many of the modern versions are (including the NIV).

Most scholars agree that the worst translation they have ever come across is the New World Translation! The New World translation Committee used the Catholic priest Johanne’s Greeber s translation , which he admits was given to him by holy SPIRITS of God ! He claimed that he received Supper natural guidance as he translated, after much time in prayer, with his wife acting as a medium and with visions of the actual words given to him on occasion! So The new World Translation committee used Certain scriptures like John 1:1 SMH 🤦🏻♀️
The King James was translated from the Texas Recptus over 5,000 scrolls and 70 translators ! I trust the KJB ❤️🔥
Me too. It has proved accurate and it has poetic beauty like no other translation.
The modern translations absolutely do not remove verses. They are based on the Critical Greek text, the Nestle-Aland 28the edition. The Critical text takes into account all of the available manuscripts that God has preserved for us. Including the earliest manuscripts, Codex Siniaticus and Codex Vaticanus. As well as other early manuscripts. The verses you’re saying are not in the early manuscripts and they aren’t used in any of the writings of the early church Fathers. These verses were added later. If you don’t believe me then look up the History of The Comma Johanneum (1 John 5:7-8) and how it even became added to the Textus Receptus, The Greek text that the KJV is based on. Every verse is carefully considered in the modern Critical Text. There’s a very good reason why all of modern Christian scholarship relies on the Critical text. We have over 1,000 times the amount of ancient manuscripts now than the small amount that the Textus Receptus was based on..and none of the manuscripts Erasmus had were early than the 11th century! He did a great job with what he had. Other than the pressure he faced to include certain Latin Vulgate readings by the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Roman Catholic priest..So verses were not removed. They weren’t there to begin with.
It has numbers for everyword
Every answer to this question has a good measure of subjectivity. Some more than others.
That is the nature of of interpreting and translating meanings of any writings from antiquity. Further, translating the "Bible" has so many additional challenges.
After all, even translating one contemporary language to another has challenges. Rarely is a word-for-worg translation even possible. Instead, a concept of the meaning of a word in one language has no equivalent in another, e.g. what is the English word for the German word "schadenfreude"? There exists no single word that even comes close, really.
Add to such a challenge the difference in both the worldview and general knowledge from an ancient people to modern times; never mind the vast difference in worldviews between modern cultures.
Using a source such a Bible Hub to read and compare various translations is an excellent suggestion!
On top of that, using concordances other than (the often criticized) Strong's Exhaustive is important to.
Lastly, ditching the WT (and other Christian apologists) propogandist method of picking a single translated word from scripture, the pondering all the possible ancient meaning along with modern day dictionary definitions, while using a heuristic approach in thought, does not lead to more accurate understanding.
In fact, that method is a foundation of doctrinal disagreement and denominational schism in Christianity, especially in fundamentalist movements lead by lay-pastors. (WT is just one of many of such denominations) Nowhere is this more evident than in the countless vague passages in the Bible, and especially in symbolic prophetic interpretations.
When we were JWs we believed we had a good handle on understanding both the ancient Jews before Christ as well as the Jew and gentile peoples of Jesus time. We did not. (But neither do Christians in general)
Regardless of how much we study genuine history, learn about the related ancient cultures, and cross reference everything we can learn from modern scholarship, there will be numerous areas and subject matter where we just have to make a choice for what we believe on those matters. Even though what meaning we "pick" may be based on much reading and reflection, such picks will be made by what aligns with our prior sensibilities. Yet once we pick, we "know" we are "right" and people that think otherwise are incorrect.
That last problem may be our greatest personal challenge -- overcoming our presuppositions and biases.

Personally I like:
Formal
* ESV. Accurate, elegant. Arguably the truest heir to the Tyndale-KJV tradition (e.g. I know it's debatable but I'd argue it has a better manuscript evidence base than TR/majority text based translations like the NKJV and MEV). But the ESV's weakness is it's not as clear or as natural-sounding as more functionally equivalent translations. The ESV strives more to be understandable than to be clear and natural.
* LEB. From Logos Bible. Arguably the best modern English "word for word" translation. It's closer to a crib for the biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek than any other modern English translation that I've seen. And I suspect a crib for the biblical languages is what most who argue for "literal" or "word for word" translations really want anyway.
* NASB/LSB. The LSB is, in essence, John MacArthur's version of the NASB. I prefer the LEB for a more woodenly direct "word for word" translation, but NASB/LSB is solid in that respect too. Many pastors and teachers of a certain generation or age who are likewise proficient in Koine Greek (that is, the Greek of the New Testament) seem to love the NASB/LSB.
Mediating
* CSB. It's tongue-in-cheek seen as the Southern Baptist version. I see it more like a (slightly) less gender inclusive version of the NIV 2011. But the CSB is also less literary than the NIV (e.g. see the Psalms). The CSB is usually perceived to have less baggage than the NIV in general, probably because the CSB is relatively new; baggage typically takes time to accumulate, and the CSB may one day lose its lustre as well.
* NIV. Although the 2011 caused an uproar among conservative evangelicals, I think the uproar was and is overblown. That's not to say I don't agree with many or even most of the criticisms against the NIV 2011. In fact, I do agree with most of the criticisms, especially on the gender inclusive issues (e.g. "assume authority"; Phoebe as a "deacon"). Indeed, I'm a complementarian. But even though I'd agree with the criticisms, I think it'd be fairer to argue the NIV translation committee, viz. the CBT, made inferior linguistic choices than that the NIV 2011 translators are some kind of theological compromisers or kowtowing to modern feminism or liberals or the like. The latter rhetoric against faithful fellow Christians is what is overblown to me.
Functional
* NET. I don't particularly care for the translation itself, per se, though that's not to suggest I dislike it by any means, but in any case the textual notes are amazing. The notes offer tremendous insight into how translation is and ought to be done.
* NLT. So very different from TLB! TLB was a paraphrase of the ASV originally done by one man, Kenneth N. Taylor, for his children. But NLT is an altogether different beast and only really shares its name with its predecessor. The NLT is a rich and fully dynamic or functionally equivalent translation done by a committee of some of the best conservative evangelical scholars today. Although it wouldn't be my choice for a primary translation, I think it's useful for certain groups (e.g. non-native English speakers, English speakers who aren't as literate). It's also good for those who want a fresh take on a passage or book of the Bible.

Some have left the JW'S and taken up another belief in religion and now believe there's a literal hell where suffering and burning is forever. In scripture apparently after his death Jesus went to preach in hell, I think they refer to
1Peter 3: 19, 20.
My question is if God is a Loving God why would he make you burn and suffer for ever and ever?
To me that's not Loving but more of a scare tactic like the JW'S do to keep you in their religion.

hell hades greek or sheol hebrew just means the grave where we are all going. You are right in thinking God is love he would not burn someone forever in a fire. Jeremiah 32v5 condemns Judah for burning their children in sacrifice to Molech and YHWH says it did not even come up into his heart to do such a thing.
Fire generally means complete destruction and Rev 20 v10 speaks about the devil & false prophet being thrown into the lake of fire...v13.14.15 speaks about the dead being given up from the sea and 'hell' (grave) being judged and the v14 says that 'hell'(grave) and death were thrown into the lake of fire.
All this language is symbolic because you cant pick up death or the grave & throw them into a furnace. It just represents the 'second death' which is permanent destruction. Torment is when a wicked person knows there is no resurrection to life for them.
Rev 21v3,4 "...death will be no more...." so no more graves permanent removal.
Our heavenly father is love and it did not ever come into his heart to burn people.

(N.T.), Quaker Bible, Recovery, Roth., RSV, R-YLT, Sawyer N.T., the Scriptures, Stern, Thomson, TNIV, TLV, Tyndale, Understandable N.T., Unvarnished N.T., Vic, Webster, Wesley N.T., Weymouth N.T., WEB, Whiston N.T., Williams' N.T., Wilton N.T., Worrell N.T., Wuest, WwE, YLT, and others.
While I admittedly do not see eye to eye with some of Eric's thoughts, credit where credit is due, he did a good job on this topic. The bible has been the most manipulated and twisted bit of literature over the centuries and is a tough one to look at objectively. The absolute biggest problem with all translations is the biased towards existing doctrine and what man's preconceived notions of what the bible is trying to say - instead of what it actually says. The vast amount of doctrine was passed down from the various councils conducted in the 4th century by the Catholic Church. They purposefully put a spin on the scriptures to keep the masses in fear of their "immortal soul" so they could control them. To make sure their secret was kept, they made it illegal to read, or even own, a bible; saying that the church was the only one that had the ability to do so. Anyone found with a bible was burned at the stake.
Imagine that, the self-proclaimed gatekeepers to God keeping the masses stupefied to retain their power and prestige...why does that sound familiar?
This leads to another problem: that of people putting faith in one bible over another, saying one has more faults than another. The truth is that all bible translations tweak God's word in some way or another to promote their own line of thought over another, or to keep people in line to their hierarchal structure. For example, the Church of England eventually allowed the Bible to be printed in English for all of the common people, but only if it was translated by state-sanctioned translators. The Roman-leaning King James authorized his new translation in 1611 (done by hand-picked, church hirelings) which continued the tradition of state-controlled religion. To note, for instance, in his translation the word "church" had supplanted the actual word "ecclesia"; thereby changing the meaning forever. Hint - "Ecclesia" does not equal "church".
And for those of you who swear by the the King James Bible, remember, the King James Version, is not THE bible. Rather, it is a VERSION of the Bible. Look at the title page of the book where it tells you as such. Realize that the King James Version was a state-created and state-authorized book and Christians are foolish if they trust a Roman emperor or a British monarch to handle the word of God fairly and without bias; especially if they want to keep the masses in line. Even its archaic use of English is confusing and can cause points of contention. This is why all translations must be considered, especially the original Hebrew and Greek, to come to a common consensus about "truth".
Revised Standard Version for overall accuracy :) , the Tanakh for the Hebrew Scriptures.

The scriptures must be read and understood from the view that the original readers would have gotten THEN. Audience relevance must be applied for proper biblical understanding. The scriptures were written TO THEM. They are preserved for us. We must ascertain their understanding at that time for proper understanding today.
Thinking of punctuation, how about " I say unto you, today you shall be with me in Paradise" or " I say unto you today, you shall be with me in Paradise"

David, I like biblehub. Usually, I start with the Beroean Standard Bible. But then I compare it to a few others. Sometimes one or two will use an entirely different [English] word in some spot. Biblehub makes it easy to switch to the original Hebrew or Greek for a particular word, too.
I hear that a lot, but when you look into it, you see that it doesn't.
Eric that last scripture you have cited is inaccurate. It is 1 John 4:1 not John 4:1.

Bible scholar Dr. Julius R. Mantey made some very interesting comments about ‘The New World Translation’.

Brother I have a question, why in Exodus 3:14 Moses asked God what was his name and God told him that his name was I AM THAT I AM, in 3:15 God said this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. It mean for me that he said what was his name for ever, and Jesus did not said the name of his father, he just named hin Father. So why some bibles call God Jehovah.
Moses knew God's name as YHWH. That name appears in the context of that passage in Exodus. But to a Hebrew, a name was more than a label to distinguish one person from another. Since Jehovah had done nothing for the nation at that time, his name was meaningless. When YHWH changed Abram's name to Abraham, it was because he was going to be the father to a multitude, so his new name became predictive. Moses wanted to know what God was going to do, so he was asking for a name. Even today, when we create a project to accomplish something, we give the project that tells others of its purpose.
I personally use the older 1950's American New Standard now [they have edited it back for cost cutting in new Books] which has many over layers & centre columns with ALL possible tranlations in Hebrew, Greek ,Latin & English &possible word meanings . Hard to find in any good condition these days ....it is my choice.....good hunting! .good BOOK!...Maranatha Shalom....old Messianic Jew.
Deut 6.4-6, Mark 12.28-32, John 17.3, John 20.17, Rom 15.6, Rom 16.27, I Cor 8.6, II Cor 11.31, I Tim 2.5, Rev 3.2, Rev 3.12, and many other scriptures. This is truth.

My bible system is simple 1599 Geneva, 1679 KJV, NKJV and HCSB.

@@mutata057 It's important to know it and to honor it, but using it depends on context. I knew my father's name and I honored him, but I never once called him by his name. He was, to me, simply "father," or "dad".

I know YHWH appears over 7,000 times and as Eric pointed out a lot of 'Christian' translators have substituted it with the title 'LORD' which of course makes it very confusing - you mix up the Father with the Son. But I suppose that is why we need to do research and make the 'truth' your own. Happy searching

Keep in mind that a "word for word" is not the gold standard for any language translation, not even between modern languages let alone languages in antiquity into modern.
In fact, a literal "word for word" is not even possible; even being close to "word for word" requires a substantial foundational view of all things scriptural, historical and cultural to produce a translation with such a claim; further, it will be interpreted and translated through filters of the authors/editors existing biases and presumptions.
Which, in the case of the WEB, means you must have faith and trust in Michael Paul Johnson above any other person(s) that produce comparable work.

After looking at all the debate on this i choose a translation that aligns with historical bible first doctrine and not the traditions of men. Frankly all these modern translations have just created doctrinal clashes and internal debates within the Church. This confusion only serves the agenda of Satan. I have landed on the KJV now and I am happy with that.

@@berniereay4055 I don’t know of anyone sensible and has love that will predict and can say “False ones or deceivers will come along and bring trouble to you by my words but you decide for yourself if that message is right or wrong.” I as a loving parent and if almighty and can predict something bad will happen to my children, I will stop that bad thing or (being deceived) to happen in the first place, is my logical thinking. After all my innocent family are still deceived by this book(NWT).

@@BeroeanPickets To me, just the evidence that there are many Bible translations and knowing the Bible which I was believing for 45 years was actually a messed up book. The day when I realized NWT had changed Micah 6:8 and the omitting of John 8:1 to 11 was enough for me to know this book can just be changed or omitted by man’s hand and the Author doesn’t care. And I wonder why my innocent family can’t even grasp this reality, or be guided by any good, true Spirit if exists that will let them realize they are deceived, if they don’t have a gut enough to realize. For me, I believe it was my gut that woke me up, not from something supernatural.
And another point that I noticed when I woke up from jw is, as any jw knows we were taught from this book that getting blood transfusion is a sin. We believed from our heart those scriptures meant that way and some had to martyr for it. Even a child was force too. Since my wake up, I thought how can the Author of this book watched the innocent believers following the charlatans interpretation of this scriptures of blood and let them die for these false prophets! If I was the Author I would come out and tell to the children in sick bed who needed blood, to take it! I would’ve told them don’t believe their translation or interpretation they are false prophets, my scriptures doesn’t mean not to get blood transfusion get it and live! But what is the reality. Those children were forced to martyr for the false prophets and they died. They had to believe what false prophets had translated or interpreted as they like. The true God didn’t appear for them to tell the real truth of His words and it’s still continuing. It’s a sad fact isn’t it.

I'm not certain that I believe that the 2001 Translation is a good translation. My way of determining which translation is accurate and which translations are not accurate is to look at Romans 16:1. Of course, there are other passages too but I have yet to compare this translation completely. Romans 16:1 speaks of Phoebe. The question in translations is whether she is a servant, a ministrant or a deacon. When I check the Young's Literal Translation which carefully compared all scriptural texts for accuracy, I see that she was a ministrant, not a servant. As a female who knows Jesus very personally, I know that Jesus had many female disciples who He was close to. I also know that in the OT there were many women who were important to God. The viewpoint presented tells me how the translators of any version view the importance of women.
Of course, there are many other things to check. For example, the KJV has many mistranslations including Ethiopia instead of Cush, modern Sudan, and corn instead of grain when corn was not brought from the New World to the Old World until Columbus brought it back. The Pharaoh did not dream of corn. He dreamed of grain.
I will carefully investigate the 2001 Translation then return to tell what I have found. Jesus will lead me with this. He always does.

However, the New American Standard Bible (NASB) is considered the most accurate Bible translation due to its strict adherence to word-for-word translation.
The most accurate Bible translations were developed using word-for-word translation. Word-for-word translation prioritizes accuracy, so there is little or no room for error.
Apart from the NASB, the King James Version (KJV) is also one of the Bible versions close to the original.
I use the NASB often. But I follow the axiom, 'Trust but verify.'

Why not read the copyright page and trademark page and contact the bible societies who print them? Why would they print bibles that are not accurate? Contact the jewish bible society! Torah and tanakh!
Forget the erroneous modern translations, the NKJV gets it right. It's the most accurate translation.

@@BeroeanPickets yes I can back it was with proof. Read the NKJV and other translations from the Texsus receptus texts. Then compare the erroneous modern translations to them, and you will see the errors in the modern translations.

When an error in translation occurs, we can go back to the original manuscripts because they represent the Bible not the translation
@@BeroeanPickets Thank you for you reply. I am no expert on this, but I have read and heard from Bart Ehrman, who is an expert, that we do not have any original manuscripts. We have copies of copies - at least with respect to the New Testament. This could have been avoided if the books had been written on clay tablets and preserved. Seems like that would be an easy thing for a God to instruct the writers to do.
@@kellystone7501 The point is that a copy of a manuscript is a copy not an interpretation which is what a translation is, so if you have an issue with bad translations, you can reference the thousands of manuscripts to identify the error. The fact that you are aware of the errors in translation is evidence that the manuscripts serve to preserve God's word

Which points out that the Christian bible is the work of men, not of God. If it was the unalloyed word of God, it wouldn't need to be translated.

@@BeroeanPickets What I'm suggesting is that so far as we know, it is not God's word, it is human's word. That's why there's disagreement as to what it actually says. And, after all, a God who can create a whole universe just by thinking it into existence surely could provide his word to everyone in the world, in their own language, in a way that wouldn't require translation by a human. In fact it wouldn't even have to be written down. It could just be implanted in every brain at birth. Many things are, so why not the word of God? Then there wouldn't be any argument about what the specific words were, or what they meant.

The King James version is THE HOLY BIBLE for all English speaking people. The truth was never lost and later found. The KJV is the pure word of GOD.

Moses and the prophets had the law but it got twisted and sometimes was corrupted with the additions they made….same today it is still universally accepted as the word of God. Think of the golden rule so simple a child can grasp it. It is a universal truth widely known by many people… and it works…. Such profound wisdom can only be inspired by our creator….
