- Join me on a rugged backroad adventure in Marion County, Georgia, as we navigate the aptly named Mud Road in my 2021 Jeep Gladiator Mojave. This isn’t just a drive; it’s a journey through history, uncovering the secrets of the land as we go.
Our expedition begins with challenging muddy patches that test the mettle of the Gladiator, leading us to the ruins of an old homesite hidden away from the beaten path. As we explore the remnants, we uncover traces of lives once lived here, now reclaimed by nature.
Continuing down Mud Road, the evidence of former homesites mounts-even though the structures themselves have disappeared, their stories linger in the scattered debris and overgrown foundations.
Further along, our path is crossed by a creek flowing directly over the road. After a careful investigation, I decide to take the plunge and drive through, adding a splash of excitement to our adventure!
The journey doesn’t stop there. We push forward, encountering more mud and finally reaching an old tenant farmer house. Nearby, we find ruins that hint at a once-large farm operation, providing a glimpse into the agricultural history of the region.
This video is a true blend of adventure and archaeology, perfect for those who love exploring the rugged outdoors and digging into the past. Join us as we traverse muddy roads and time to unveil the hidden history of Marion County.

I believe that plant was an iris Robert thanks for your videos! I enjoy your content! Thank you! ❤️ from Missouri !
You have to admit it was still fun.
@@cynthiacarter514 absolutely!
As I’m watching, I hear John Denver sing in my head. 🎼Country roads take me home to the place I belong...🎵
@@cynthiacarter514 life was certainly simpler in a beautiful way!
The woman of the home wanting to bring beauty to her home by planting roses and bulbs…
It made me think about the old practice of women trading plants and bulbs with each other.
Yes! I love it! That was an iris, the last one he pointed out that was about to open. Sone of those old varieties are so much more beautiful
@@cynthiacarter514oh geez now I feel realy OLD 😆 🤣 😂 I still enjoy trading plants,bulbs,flowers and vegetable seeds 🪴 🌱 🌿 🌾 🌼 🌸 🌻 🌹 💐 🏵 🥀 57yr old 😮😊
Gladiolus, running roses, daffodils, garlic all are signs of an old home place.
running shoes
That Jeep is "YOU" Robert. They should give you that Jeep!
That's not his jeep?
@@brendaz9222he said it was his in his previous video! I don’t think he’d be driving down muddy roads and all that stuff if it wasn’t! 🤷🏼♀️
That chimney looks beautiful
The plant getting ready to bloom is a gladiolus flower. Great video Robert !
Hmm, I looked that up to be sure, and have to agree with you. I grew glads in Albuquerque but they wouldn't stand erect, so only had them one year.---My guess on that plant was a Dutch Iris.
@@alanatolstad4824 My Grandmother grew them as an edge around her vegetable garden when I was a kid .
Some of the people who lived in that house in its heyday planted flowers to mark the path leading to the house. Maybe like we have balloons 🎈 marking the location of the birthday party. Miss Plantation Lady, your flowers are still blooming. You haven't been forgotten. Robert, I wonder if there was a family cemetery on that property. Thanks to the timber people for not knocking down the chimney.
That sound would drive a person insane. Glad they are not in Kansas.
We will have them in Arkansas in July and August. You get used to them and don't even notice. Just background noise.
We are even expecting them in Ohio soon.
The background noise of the cicadas adds a whole different level of creepiness. Loved the video.
Man, you have no fear. You must be immune to copperheads 😮
Watch the ticks and snakes walking in that deep brush
Always watching out for snakes!
You crack me up! “ I keep forgetting it’s a Jeep!” 🙄🤦♀️😂🤣😂🤣👍🏼🙌🏻😁👋🏼💞
lol I do, I’ve been so used to driving that ole 2WD truck 😂
Nothing better than taking a road less traveled and seeing where it ends! Thanks Robert!
That flower getting ready to bloom is gladiola!! Very beautiful flowers!
That rose is the rambler rose 'Excelsea'. It dates to early 1900s.
That leafy plant is a parrot gladiolus. Typical of old homesites.
Thanks for the IDs!
@@AdventuresIntoHistory those old plants can be used to date homesites.lf you see dark pink and light pink rambling roses they are Dorothy Perkins and Lady Godiva respectively. They have been around about 120 years. They would go great with your Old Byrd Farm.
I enjoy seeing those old garden plants in your vids. The old folks used to call those plants 'passalong plants'.
In Minnesota we have ditches on each side of dirt roads. Helps with erosion. However, my cousin from northern Minnesota had mud vacation every spring because the school buses could not get through.
I love that you WALKED BAREFOOT into water that you were worried about DRIVING into. 🤣 What a great adventure today. Such pretty scenery. Love that Jeep!
He didn't want to get his Wal-Mart crocs dirty.
😂😂😂 hey I could feel with my feet if it sudden got real deep and how hard packed it was 😅😅
@@kathywalker6915 😅😅
😂😅😂😅
😂
Gladiola. That jeep will get you where you need to go. I drove a mail route with 85% of muddy roads. It will go!
I would recommend keeping a pair of shoes in your Jeep that you don't mind getting wet for wading in water like that just in case of glass etc.
Yeah, shoulda used my Wal-Mart Croc clones if I’d thought about it
So sad to see someone's house deteriorate. Love old home places.
"don't know what y'all are worried about, its a jeep!" Hilarious Robert and your hesitation was all OUR FAULT! Got it. LOL
😂😂😂
We are sorry but you and dan got stuck last time
Those back roads would have my spine tingling. Out of anticipation of the unknown.
I get that!
I lived for two years in Wilcox County, somewhat southeast of Marion. There were very many unpaved roads there. Every time it rained you could call them Mud Road. I did the 2010 census there and I went all over the county. Never saw such poverty in my life. I drove over many "Mud Roads" doing census work in a 1995 Honda minivan and when it was over I promised myself two things: 1. I would never do census work again. @. I would move out of Wilcox County.
That was so much fun, Robert! I’m certainly impressed with your Jeep! This former GA girl lives in Arizona now, surrounded by the Mohave Desert! Thanks for the views of big oaks, the old homesteads and that river road! I miss big trees so much!
Robert, I believe you should do this in more counties and go to different counties and show us these old back roads and history it would be awesome. Just a thought.
Must be a well built chimney to be still standing long after the house fell down
I am so glad you are showing where people lived their lives many years ago. Yep, have the roof closed when you drive on old dirt roads!
They tore down an old country store out where I live and I got a couple of the old hand hewn beams out of it and use them for benches
I would love to get a metal detector in them woods. That red clay is slicker than snot when it rains!😂😂
It's a good thing that those plants helped you locate the old dwellings. After so many years these flowery plants continue to survive. Thank you. I enjoyed the sound of cicadas. They are part of the nature. You have a great company...your Jeep.
Good tour. Good Shots. Good Jeep. I hope those house ruins made you appreciate how well you have done in saving The Old Byrd House from total ruin. You proved again, you are a country boy! You and a 4x4 are always able. It is pretty out there! Oh, BTW - It's a Mudjave! Dessert rated, for fun drives after dinner and every other time. ❣❣👍👍
Love riding and walking with you on these old cool adventures. Glad you aren't allergic to poison ivy are oak.
Robert,
Great Adventure and
no getting stuck, that's a real bonus:)
Our sugar sand road in the Pine Barrens in Jersey
were the kind that said, keep moving or else!
Cheers,
Rik Spector
i love listening to the cicadas. never tire of hearing them. Texas is going full blown already.
That low water crossing is pretty neat. I call that a West Virginia car wash.
All your adventures lead to finding pieces of hidden history that is so interesting to see.
Robert, you bring us on the best adventures. Thank you so much for the passages to the past. BTW - as much as I appreciate Dan - and I do - what has become of "other Robert?" Is he OK?
Enchanted woods. Nice adventure. Like.
Robert you are are goof!!! Love the jeep!
Great adventure, Robert! This was fun to go along with you. That's one cool Jeep! Finding those fallen houses and land sights just makes me wonder who lived there and where they came from and where they went. I'm so glad you are keeping that happening from the Old Byrd Farm. That will be seen and fully functional when you get it all fixed up. Thank you for the tour.
Same here. I wonder who the people were and what kind of life they lived. How far away was the market, school, church, their family? How many generations lived there? Where did they originally come from? Their names. I can almost hear the children playing, running through the yard. Gosh, the list and questions go on. They must've been hearty folks, living that far out. Probably knew no other way.
Sleep, find shade, eat and pin feathers!!! What a foursome!!!! Thank you Berkeley!!!!
Cicadas were getting loud in Nashville over the weekend too. They were also hanging out on peoples fences.
The Roses are beautiful sad you can't get some roots from them and start some at old Bird Farm growing on arches would be beautiful.
Been listening for the Cicadas up here in Maryland - none so far !!!
I lived in the Mojave Desert. We had paved roads with no bridges. When it rained the washes filled up. Sometimes we had a small amount of rain going across the road. Sometimes we had a lot of rain going across the road. I went over in a Grand Am and found myself bobbing a bit. A car got washed off the road shortly after I went across and there had to be a water rescue. There was a car in the wash half buried for the dirt and rocks. I never went that way again where there was a big rain. Your Jeep Mojave is perfect for the desert and water crossings as long as they are not too deep.
Robert enjoyed this just listening to all your knowledge above the plants and how to find these old abandoned homes that are taken over by nature.
Thank you!
Robert I hope you are keeping your eye out for snakes and ticks too. I love going with you on these old Georgia roads. My dad is from Cordele we loved driving on these roads as kids looking at old home places he remembered as a kid. Thank you for taking us with you!
Spooky cicada woods and you’re by yourself!😬 Marvelous antiquity still in Georgia! Beautiful adventure.
Im glad to see you wandering around my home county, it truly is a beautiful place, especially on the back roads and dirt trails. Good work!
Every time you drive around in the Red Mud Road ....all I hear playing is "Junebug" from the B'52's Cosmic Thing Album ... LOLOL
This was soooo much fun!!!!
You sure put the *adventure* in Adventures Into History!😊 Loved your tour down this watery road. Loved the old homesteads.
You don't need to visit amusement parks to get a good drenching on a water ride. No sir, you've got even better driving through those road puddles in your Jeep!💦 How fun! Getting splashed, although probably work to clean up later, seems pretty exciting. That Jeep is *you*. Suits you to a "T".
Loved your road shots! Especially the splashy ones!🥳
Ok that sounds spooky.
You’re so much fun! Loved the adventure and am crossing my fingers that you get permission to look inside the old farm house. I was almost out of my chair and cheering as you contemplated whether to drive through the creek crossing. Loved this foray into muddy dirt roads and history! Please, along with your work on the Old Byrd Farm, cemetery exploration and maintenance, and looking after Annie, Blue, and Cat, please take us on lots more of these old dirt road adventures!
Robert you are a trip!
When I was in the Navy, I attended a technical school in Memphis. We used to march in formation to and from class. On morning the Chief in charge of the morning formation picked a "June Bug" off a tree that he got to chirp by gently squeezing it, and used it to call cadence. 😂
😅
Call them for what
@@bobbiebabb9305 In this case, class.
Were you by chance at the Naval Base in Millington, Tenn???
@@pamott1809 Yes! How do you know of it?
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for your channel! I became disabled 7 years ago. I used to be able to go adventuring like this and I miss it so much. Thanks also for taking the hits on your vehicle and the bug bites on my behest!
Wow, the sound ❤ I thought the engine of the car was purring lol
What a fun trip!! Thank you so much for taking us along. Ready for another one soon. Stay safe 🙏💙
The things you find are amazing! Thank you Robert Lovea nd Light God Bless!
Thankyou again, for taking us on another adventure into history. Really going to keep a closer eye, on those backroads in my area. Loving your new ride, too mate.
That Jeep is perfect for you! Great fun, exploring the past with you. Pine trees sure have replaced many of our native trees. It's a shame.
My old house was built in 1957 , 10 years later I was born in 1967. I love my house, I love watching your videos, brings back memories of my childhood memories.
Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us.
Great Find that house! I always love the fact that there is such a good TH-cam channel about history in my state Georgia! I love history and nature. Great channel and great videos! Keep em coming!
You sure are a brave guy!!!
When I was a kid (I'm 70 now) we would go down in the hills of eastern Oklahoma where my parents were from. We would go to visit my granny. There was a creek that crossed the road. We would all have to get out and wade across the creek. Only the driver stayed in the car. All of us in it made it too heavy. It was an old heavy car, but wasn't a Jeep! Also I always wondered where the people that lived there so long ago got the wisteria from? It's not native so was it mail order or sold locally?
Well, that invasive type is from China. Kudzu, another awful invasive plant is from Japan, I think. Someone had it in the World's Fair in the late 1800's- early 1900's (not sure of the date off hand). It was being touted as an attractive ground cover. People started planting it and it spread southward to the southern states. They didn't realize what a terrible plant it was in those climates. So maybe wisteria came from China that way or maybe someone brought cuttings over from there, people saw it, thought it was beautiful and that was the start of it.
Today is the first day in weeks that I don't hear the Cicadeas. Their sound makes me think of the movies where the space ship is about to land😱
I was thinking of the Triffids 🤣
Ticks Ticks... and more ticks....
Didn’t get not a single one 😅
@@AdventuresIntoHistory Excellent News 🤩🙌🏼
Thank you for sharing this amazing site with us take care 🙂
Careful of ticks!!!
Crazy what is found when adventuring.
Robert, I've been watching you silently for years now. Glad you got that Jeep. I'm a N.E. Tennessean.
Driving on this road reminds me of going to my families cabin in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Thanks for another great video. I really appreciate the upgrade to 4K also. Looks so nice.
Love your videos and enjoy watching them. May the lord bless and protect you Robert and bringing out the past history
Wow, we are old school cultural history buffs. This video was so exciting. We felt like we were😂 right there walking through the bushes and driving through mud and pond. This should be a regular adventure show!
That was so much fun. Thank you for the ride.
Enjoyed your trip on the backroads!
You sure are dedicated!!!😅
Absolutely
I have tinnitus really bad from aircraft noise and I'm hearing impaired. Damn! Those cicadas are loud. It's cool seeing that much abandonment and the state old property falls into.
I have tinnitus too. Sounds like the cicadas are always with me.
You're so funny. Love it. Kate.
I think that one plant with the pointy leaves/stems is Iris. Like daffodils they come from bulbs. They are both very hearty and go on forever. Deer and other wildlife don't usually eat them.
They’re poisonous to animals!
Awesome ride through the back roads. Always an adventure!
So sad..I wonder the history.. The people.. The clothes
Me too!
They got it right by naming it muddy road for sure.. enjoy your videos keep them coming...
Thanks!
It's exciting to go to unknown places ,love those old road adventures 🤗thanks Robert ❤❤
Another great video..there’s probably a whole lot of homes in those hills…amazing how at one time the land was cleared and livable to now…
I'm guessing the boll weevil cleared out alot of those plantations and farms, but sometimes things like the location of the railroad in a nearby town or businesses moving will change where people live.
Thank you for another awesome adventure...and in your jeep...love your jeep Robert !!! Dont forget to check yourself for ticks !!! Looking forward tom your next adventure!!
You should.
Get some cuttings off those roses. If they could last for years out there but no care. They can definitely last in your home.
For sure
Woah love this old road
I really enjoy your videos. Your passion and respect for the people of days gone by is truly evident in your narration. The scenery alone is a real treat as is Montana's but the plant life like kudzu, China berry and Wisteria isn't common to Montana. Thank you for sharing ❤
Love exploring videos like this!!
Thanks!
Such an amazing homestead find !!! I just loved this entire video❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Look at the size of those boards that appear to be the floor in the house that is a awesome find
Such a beautiful ride house must have been beautiful ❤️
It is amazing what you can find on the back roads of Georgia and when you decide to be adventurious it is helpful to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Great adventure Robert. Your video's are so entertaining and suspensful all at the same time.
When you come across some of the old flowers and wildflowers you should take a start from them to plant at OBF. May be some of them are kinda scarce and you can bring them back and decorate the property at the same time. Love all your videos!!!
Can’t believe you don’t have Dan with you on a mud road 😀🤣
I love your adventures. Scary 😨 if you ever get stuck!! Stay safe. Some people must think 🤔 you are lunatic but I don't.
If he gets stuck in a 4 wheel drive Jeep then he's REALLY stuck!
Plus he’s got some great friends to help get him out!
Robert, every time you go wandering through the woods/brush, I just want to check you for ticks! My goodness they’re horrible up here in Ohio, so I can’t imaging how they are in GA.
