You can't beat plain "V' belts Peter. They seem to like fitting at least one toothed belt on lathes these days, for no apparent reason. The one that broke looks a bit wimpy. Nice job on the clamps. They should be very handy. Cheers Rob

G’day Rob thanks for your comments. The wimpy belt is only 4.5mm W x 3.5mm thick, yes a lot on the light side, I don’t normally criticise manufacturers as supposedly an engineer has specified it to meet the criteria needed but really, such a small belt. I have been told how to minimise belt failure by releasing the belt when not being used and engaging the belt after the motor is turned on, really! The manual mentions nothing, I am investigating fitting a Z series belt but there are compromises which I think I can live with, I’ll see. And yes I think the clamps will be handy.
      Cheers

Hi Peter, well done on the clamps, there is really quite a bit of work involved, hence the price of commercially available "decent" ones. Loving your open oil fire to keep the shop warm lol. Cheers, Jon

G’day Jon. I agree the manufacturing costs would be high, although the legs would be stamped and punched the numerous other components and then assembly compared to a “G” or “C” clamp only 4 parts. What do you call them G or C clamps, c’mon the screw hanging down makes it look like a “G”
The flash point always catches me, it’s a good demonstration on how to burn a house down cooking fish and chips:-)
      Cheers
      Peter

@@pgs8597 Hi Peter, G clamps here in the UK. I think C Clamps is an Americanism. Interestingly, joiners who also use them over here, used to call them G cramps back in the 70's & 80's, not sure if they still do today though. Cheers, Jon

    Hello Peter,
They look good. Nice meticulous work. I think I now realize why they are so expensive, there is a lot that goes into them. Yours are probably a little tighter than the mass produced one, they should be a pleasure to use.
    All the best!
    Eddie

G’day Eddie. The Kant Twist brand is super expensive here $68 AUD for “1” 3 inch clamp and even the kit from USA was $60 AUD but half that was postage hence why I opted to buy the plans for less than $10, even cheap knockoff are $35 each from Amazon anyhow I’m sure they’ll be handy.
      Cheers

Thanks Matty. I’ll be doing something to fix the belt problem, still sorting it out, maybe Z series belt.
      Cheers

Hey Peter. Very nice work mate. Congratulations on getting them finished. The clamps came out great. Cheers, Aaron.
PS: you made me laugh with the slow corona boat from ch ch china 😂

Thanks Aaron I’m very pleased with the outcome. Yeah everything seems to be slower than usual slow from China, maybe something to do with pissing them off maybe or it’s difficult to manoeuvre around all them coal ships parked up on their coastline.
      Cheers
      Peter

Peter, they turned out awesome. I will definitely remember your oil finishing trick. Do you use, used oil? Great project and thank you for sharing.

G’day Joe. Yes, used oil, I don’t know what finish fresh oil gives as I haven’t tried it yet, maybe one day.
      Stay safe church

    Hi Peter
Another project completed, well done, shame about the belt, they don't make them like they use to, they look a little light weight for the job or maybe it's the camera angle!!
see you next time, maybe you can get the garage finished!!
    take care
    Kev

Thanks Kev. The camera did portray the correct impression of the belt, crap, it’s 4.5mm W x 3.5mm D you’d be lucky to run an electric toothbrush with it.
      Cheers
      Peter
