The friend of my mum had cancer and wished to see the northern lights before she passed away and the production team paid for the trip so she and her husband could travel and see the northern lights.

This was described by a judge as “human bear baiting” Kyles behaviour in local radio was disgraceful, and this programme pandered to the lowest common denominator. Inserting the odd story to tug at the emotional heartstrings was just a cynical exercise to placate the broadcasting authorities.
You can totally see how effing pissed off Jeremy was when he was being a total ass wipe and threw that envelope at the guest then the guest got up and threw his effnig attitude right back at him and the envelope smacked him in the head! Without those gorgeous security guards (especially the tattooed one) he wouldn’t last five minutes!
Don't know about the show tanking in America, but I do know the reason why it didn't last long was because Jeremy Kyle found out he had cancer so the US version had to end there because he came back to the UK for treatment but I don't know why he never went back though, I just know the US version got cancelled because he had cancer.
