Great video. The driver tech used in HD800 series is clearly much more advanced than HD600 series. I'm thinking of removing the external black metal grills. I think that will improve the sound by a hair or two.

Thanks for this video, my pair were in need of cleaning, grime over the years, they sound better than ever, old is gold in this case I think.

I have the HD800s and they are my endgame for classical/ movies etc and the outstanding sound. The build is quality all around

Yeh they are really good. I have just got some Hifima Arya organic, they possibly sound a little better but don't feel nearly as solid

@@CustomCans I’d like to hear the Arya, different planar technology

Gonna be giving them a green spray paint instead of that scratch attracting silver. Thanks for that very detailed dismantling.

As far as I know, those fancy shaped circles in front of the driver are resonators which are enhancing or suppressing some specific frequencies, while not obstructing airflow, as sponge alike materials do.

Thanks - I suspected something like that may be the reason

Is the disassembly for the HD800 and HD800S the same? I need to take my HD800S apart to fix or replace the spring in the left ear used for the swivel. It's so squeaky and sounds like it popped out or something.

    • @CustomCans

Yes, I believe they are built the same way

I plan on messing around with a 3D printer and learning design and modding skills on cheap headphones (thanks to your channel), but I am very tempted to get some HD800S or Verite drivers eventually and mess around with those. I am curious how good baffles can get, especially in closed headphones.
I think you should get more expensive headphones to mess around with in the future. It seems like a good way to learn some tricks and also find drivers to build headphones around.

I do have a set of used HD800 drivers in the parts drawer as we upgraded some HD800 with HD800s drivers. I just have not had a chance to do anything with them yet ;)
At the moment our youtube channel only makes around £40 and costs probably 10 times that to run so budgets are tight but if we end up getting more subscribers in the future, we can start playing with more expensive headphones

You should do a mandalorian armour- black chrome finish that would really look bad ass! I’m going to try it on mine once I find the right paint, mirror finish powder and clear coat combo.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't know - I don't earn nearly enough from youtube to buy a pair to dismantle so it will probably only happen if someone send a pair in to us for some mods or repairs

To me the S version was never an upgrade. I much prefer the original HD800 drivers really.

I'd love to see you try to fix the HD700s issues. I still feel like the HD800/s is missing something that the 600 series has, and always found the HD700 housing a much better fit and intimacy despite its glaring faults. I think Sennheiser missed the mark by using the HD700 drivers in the 660s when they could have used the HD700 housing with a different set of drivers instead to amend it.
    I believe the HD700 is a 20 degree angle whereas the HD800 is a 10 degree.
I don't see a lot of people moding headphones anymore and you seem to be one of the last of a dying breed.

    • @CustomCans

I have never played with some HD700s - nobody has ever sent some in to us. I may have to see if I can pick some up on eBay and have a go on them

In all the videos that I could listen to on youtube the HD700 is a horror.
      that's why I never bought the HD 660 , because it's a recycled HD700.
It would seem that the HD800 and HD800S range is no better off.
today it is the FOCAL Clear which has taken over.

It is probably the best material for that design - the shape is very important and if they had made it from something like machined aluminium it probably would have would have been more resonant and added quite a lot to the cost but I know what you mean - it would have been nice if they made a wooden version or something

They probably want to keep down the weight, heavy headphones are not fun to wear in the long run.

The bearing on HD800 is 2mm-2.5mmm, it will feet any of those measurements. it will help people who wonder what size is bearing to replace it!! good luck.
