Even from a geopolitical point of view ,if the land bridge is constructed through Thailand,it will still be under the radar of Indian tri services theatre command based at Andaman and Nicobar islands. Indian Ocean has been our sphere of influence for the last few millenia and Indian government should continue to maintain that for year's to come.

The land bridge project is inconvenient as you need to unload all the goods from a cargo ship in the coast of Indian Ocean, then load to a train, which will travel to another port in the opposite side, then unload before loading to another cargo ship there. There are overhead of two cargo ships instead of one plus transportation cost of moving thew goods from one port to another by train. That is why China is not interested, China is interested in building a strait rather than a land bridge. I think this project is dead before it gets started.

The possibility of the US blocking the Malacca Straits is almost impossible as the US needs the Straits far more for its trade than the landbridge, which favors China.

  • @RUHappyATM

Canal is a possibility, but may face strong opposition due to a possibly adverse EIA.
Plus literally make Southern Thailand separate from majority Buddhist Thailand.
However, with the focus of manufacturing shifting to mainland SEAsia, the canal option might be a short-cut to the European markets.
IMHO, the land bridge doesn't make any logical sense. Loading/unloading on both coasts will make it less time-saving and rail transport for containers for 90kms is less energy efficient than maritime transport.

An excellent idea as it will bring much needed money into both the Thai and Cambodian economies. However, due to its funding being linked with China, and the fact that the current Thai PM and former president are of Chinese descent, these projects can’t be trusted as the chances of large scale fraudulent activities being committed are very high. History has already shown this. The other downside is the impact on SG’s economy, which relies heavily on shipping. A backstab, considering SG had always supported China. 😂

Once in a blue moon, someone will bring up this topic again. The Thailand canal will not be a success like Suez Canal and Panama Canal. Many experts have studied this subject and the conclusion is the cost are too high and the benefits are too low. Unlike Suez Canal and Panama Canal, the cost saving and time saving for shipping companies are not there. The Thai canal have limitation like the Panama canal and restrict the ship sizes. If the canal are not big enough, super tanker and huge container ships cannot use the canal. If the canal are big enough for super tanker and huge container ships. the cost of the canal will increase. Thailand will be heavily in debt due to this project.
