@Hajun Lee ... by knowing the fretboard and scales very well and hours, days, weeks or years of practicing those right hand skills, i guess? It's not that hard if you once learned it and figured out those connections in your brain to make the correct movement with the right hand. I needed around 5 weeks of intensive practice to nail my first serious fingerstyle song - Eiro Nareth's Version of "Ohne Dich" from Rammstein - nearly flawless with walking baseline, melody and even the basic percussion. So i guess it's a matter of time. As always. - When strumming it was mostly focus on the left hand and the right one only does the rhythm, but in fingerstyle there is a lot of focus for the abilities and possibilities of your right hand. Kristan did you ever take lessons are you self taught? i've been playing a long while self taught but took a few years break from guitar and picked it up again 2 years ago, i'm still self taught but have seen a huge increase in skill... i've been mainly playing stummy kind of stuff but i really like classical/fingerstyle kind of stuff. I see you have given a few tips here for sure but do you think getting lessons are really important or do you think someone could do it without? I probably will be in a position to dedicate some time to lessons but finding the right tutor for me is going to be a big one.
Start by learning to play anything on the radio with open chords, Move onto the correct way of playing which is usually bar chords, then move onto simple riffs like californication, under the brigde etc. Move onto stairway to heaven and cheesy stuff like that, then practice all of them for 6-12 hours at a time, (thats pretty much my youth) until they're perfect, and along the way learn more, then once you've mastered all of that learn every fingerstyle song that catches your ear. I was pretty good at all of the above but my first fingerstyle song took about 2 months to learn (something just like this, eddie van der meer) then I kept slowly moving up. Still takes time but quicker each month because as Kristan says your brain starts realising what needs to be done and it becomes more natural. Practice practice practice. Doesn't come quickly but is worth it! Keep going. I would say if you can master under the bridge (whole song) then no need for a tutor, all the basics of playing great guitar are in that song. But don't give up after 2 days. Keep going. Blood sweat and tears but worth it :)

I have to say I have rewatched and watched this video hundreds of times. It is in a way relaxing. The play itself is amazing but with keeping tempo on the E string is amazing. Flawless sir. I will forever share this and I listen to it very very often. It’s magical.

Someone actually introduced me to this channel and I've liked it ever since. I've just never understood he and others compose these finger picking songs with amazing quality since I'm just a very early intermediate. Once I'm this good, I'll be satisfied. lol
